The Russo Brothers are officially in talks to return to Marvel as the pair are in early discussions to direct both Avengers 5 and Avengers 6.
Joe and Anthony Russo directed Avengers: Endgame, Infinity War, Captain America: Civil War, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They’re also said to be listed as producers on the fourth Captain America film, Brave New World.
The pair have made it no secret they want to direct Secret Wars in the MCU. Now they could get their chance, and it could be another big two-part Avengers movie.
THR reports the Russo Bros. are in early talks to return to Marvel Studios to direct Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Much like has previously been reported, it’s again said that Avengers 5, previously titled “Kang Dynasty,” is getting refocused. It has previously been said Avengers 5 would be moving away from Kang because of the failure of Quantumania and the legal troubles surrounding Jonathan Majors.
It has also been said Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars could be Part 1 and Part 2. With the Russo Brother potentially directing both, another big two-part Avengers movie seems likely. No doubt it worked for Infinity War and Endgame.
Update: Deadline adds in their report: “Sources tell Deadline, Joe and Anthony Russo are being brought into the fold at Marvel Studios on various fronts with one of their first big priorities being the upcoming Avengers sequels at the studio. Talks for the pair to direct those films are still in early stages, but the plan would be for them to be involved in both films.”
The announcement also comes a week before Marvel Studios returns to Comic-Con in a big way. Kevin Feige has already teased the Fantastic Four at the SDCC. Feige also confirmed a Deadpool panel in addition to the MCU panel. It’s also known Feige will take part in three Marvel panels, including for the first time a Marvel Comics panel.
It’s possible a surprise announcement from Marvel at Comic-Con could be Joe and Anthony Russo directing Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars, possibly titled “Avengers: Secret Wars Part 1” and “Avengers: Secret Wars Part II.”
Regarding saving Marvel, the MCU has suffered greatly since the Russos left the MCU following Endgame. Marvel has also lost James Gunn, Jon Favreau, and Joss Whedon. What the MCU has been missing is quality story and quality creatives.
Deadpool & Wolverine also comes out next week and has been said to be saving the MCU. Director Shawn Levy has gone on record about the problems at Marvel.
Levy was also said to be in talks to direct Avengers 5, but THR makes it sound as if it isn’t happening. Deadline also says Levy is instead focusing on his other upcoming projects, which includes his Star Wars movie.
Hopefully things are changing with Deadpool & Wolverine and the hopeful return of the Russos.
The untitled Avengers 5 has a May 1, 2026 release date, and Avengers: Secret Wars gets released on May 7, 2027.
