Disney showed off new Toy Story 5 footage at CinemaCon, and the setup is exactly what Pixar has been teasing for this sequel: toys vs. tech.
The scene centers on Bonnie getting completely hooked on her tablet, called LilyPad, while Jessie, Buzz, and the rest of the toys sit by watching her ignore them. Instead of playing with her toys, Bonnie is stretched out on the floor, hiding under a blanket, and glued to the screen.
By the next morning, things have only gotten worse. Bonnie is on her bed with the iPad and can barely be pulled away for breakfast. That is when Jessie decides enough is enough.
Jessie takes on LilyPad
Jessie leads the charge against the device, while Buzz tries to calm things down. Jessie confronts LilyPad directly and tells it she has been trying to help Bonnie make friends with the Jordan twins down the street.
LilyPad fires back in a way the toys never expect. The device repeats Jessie’s comments, then plays them back in multiple languages, and even turns them into music. The toys are left stunned by what it can do.
Things get even worse for Jessie when LilyPad claims it can help Bonnie with all of her developmental goals and quickly finds a way to connect her with other kids. One feature called “On The Pond” includes a group chat, and the toys are shocked when Bonnie suddenly “makes friends in 15 seconds.”
Jessie is not buying it. She pushes back and argues that toys like her helped the kids before Bonnie grow up just fine. The footage then turns physical, with Jessie going after the iPad and even accidentally kicking Buzz off the bed during the chaos.
Bonnie gets a sleepover invite
The big payoff comes when Bonnie walks in and, of course, does not notice the toys sprawled everywhere. Instead, she checks the group chat.
A scream follows, her parents spit out their coffee, and Bonnie learns she has been invited to a sleepover.
For Bonnie, it is a huge win. For the toys, it looks like the start of another crisis. The footage ends with them waking up to the reality that they may be facing extinction all over again.
Toy Story 5 is leaning hard into toys vs. tech
Pixar’s official description for Toy Story 5 says the movie is about the toys dealing with what kids are obsessed with now: electronics.
The studio has described the sequel as “Toy meets Tech,” which lines up exactly with the CinemaCon footage centered on LilyPad and Bonnie’s screen time. The movie is directed by Andrew Stanton, co-directed by Kenna Harris, and opens in theaters June 19, 2026.
The LilyPad character has also already been part of the movie’s marketing, with recent footage and promotional material showing Jessie going head-to-head with the device as Bonnie drifts away from traditional play.
