New Stargate Series Ordered at Amazon From Franchise Veteran Martin Gero

Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit a brand-new Stargate TV series for Prime Video, marking the first major revival of the franchise in over a decade, and it’s coming from someone who helped build it.

Martin has also gone on record stating it’s not a reboot and that it’s its own unique chapter in the Stargate Universe. More below.

A Long-Awaited Return

After years of false starts, internal studio conflict, and fan frustration, Stargate is finally moving forward again.

Prime Video has ordered a new series from Stargate veteran Martin Gero, who worked on Atlantis, Universe, and SG-1, and most recently served as showrunner on NBC’s Quantum Leap and Blindspot. Gero will serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the new project.

Executive producers include Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Monarch), as well as Stargate movie creators Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi — key figures behind the original TV run — are on board as consulting producers.

Gero Returns to Where It All Started

Gero spoke about his history with the franchise in the official announcement.

“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA,” said Gero. “I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you.  And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

Gero also celebrated on Instagram:

Twenty years ago, I took this photo alone on Stage 6 at Bridge Studios in Vancouver, a young writer not sure if I was even allowed to be down there. It was my first week as Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis…my first real job in television.

Over five years and 150+ episodes, Stargate taught me everything. It’s written into my storytelling DNA. And though I’ve been fortunate to create many shows since, I’ve never stopped believing someone should bring Stargate back.

I never imagined that someone would be me.

Today, my journey comes full circle: Stargate is coming back to television on Prime Video, and I’ve been given the incredible responsibility of guiding its return.

For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.

Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV Development, Amazon MGM Studios said, “Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”

Stargate’s Legacy

The Stargate franchise began with the 1994 feature film directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. It quickly expanded into a sci-fi empire.

The new series will revisit the core premise: a wormhole-generating device allowing travel across the galaxy, with military, mythological, and political elements that helped define the franchise’s original success.

What Comes Next?

While no casting or release date has been announced, development appears to be well underway. With longtime Stargate figures back in the fold and Amazon actively investing in its MGM IP, the series looks to finally be getting the revival fans have been waiting for.
