Comcast Enters the Fight to Buy WBD (Scoop Confirmed)

It’s now confirmed that Comcast has officially entered the bidding for Warner Bros. Discovery — but not the entire company.

Instead, Comcast is exploring an offer for WBD’s streaming and film divisions, which lines up exactly with what I’ve been told for years: David Zaslav’s plan has always been to split Warner Bros. Discovery in two and to “hopefully” sell to Comcast (Universal).

According to Variety, Comcast has hired Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley and already has access to WBD’s financials as it evaluates a formal bid.

This development matches the insider information I reported earlier — that Zaslav’s goal was to “hopefully” sell Warner Bros. (HBO Max, Warner Bros. Pictures, DC, WB Games) to Comcast, while Zaslav would retain control over Discovery Global (Food Network, HGTV, TLC, Discovery+).

WBD Is Already Splitting Into Two Companies

Variety confirms that WBD is in the process of dividing itself into Warner Bros. (HBO Max, film studio, DC, and streaming) and Discovery Global (cable networks and Discovery+), a move recently confirmed by WBD with its Upfront Presentation announcement.

The plan is simple: Sell Warner Bros. to a buyer like Comcast or Skydance, while Discovery Global spins off and stays under Zaslav.

This matches exactly what I’ve been reporting from my Comic-Con insiders. This wasn’t a surprise. This has been the plan all along.

Comcast Wants the Valuable Pieces: Streaming and Movies

Comcast is completing a spin-off of most NBCU cable networks into a new company, Versant, by the end of 2025. After that, Comcast is free to chase acquisitions without running into antitrust issues.

Variety reports the strategy is clear: Comcast wants the streaming service, HBO Max, and the film studio, not the cable networks, news, etc.

That puts DC Studios, DCU, and everything under Warner Bros. Pictures directly in the crosshairs.

Mike Cavanagh, Comcast’s co-CEO, wouldn’t deny the move, only saying “more things are viable” after the Versant spin-off.

Paramount, Netflix, and Comcast All Circling the Same Assets

Variety also confirms three major players are now competing:

  • Comcast – interested in Warner Bros., HBO Max, DC, film studio
  • Skydance/Paramount (Ellison) – wants the whole company
  • Netflix – only wants selective pieces, not the entire thing

That’s three different kinds of buyers, all chasing different parts of WBD.

However, the trades have reported that Netflix is not really interested in WBD, but rather trying to drive the price up for Skydance. That really leaves only Skydance and Comcast.

WBD’s board has rejected three bids from Ellison so far — including his most recent $23.50/share offer — and it’s now being reported that Ellison may have to pursue a hostile takeover, which would mean bypassing WBD’s leadership and taking his offer directly to shareholders.

What about James Gunn and the DCU?

Regarding James Gunn and the DCU, previously I was told that if Comcast/Universal bought WB, Universal Pictures “probably” would keep Gunn and his DC universe.

However, that was before Gunn launched his DC Studios, which saw Superman at best break even and Gunn’s DC shows, Creature Commandos and Peacemaker, tank in viewership. How well is Supergirl going to do next year? Clayface? And Warner Bros. Pictures, under Mike De Luca, already set the release date for the Minecraft sequel only two weeks after Gunn’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, in 2027. What does that say? It says it all.

I’ve since been told that when WBD sells, whoever buys it will want to relaunch and do DC their own way. That seems to especially be the case with David Ellison and Paramount, who are backed by President Donald Trump. A recent report also confirmed what I have been stating – something which doesn’t fit with Gunn’s woke DCU – that Paramount is going MAGA.

Gunn has now pivoted away from his original DC plans in favor of doing his Superman family approach. It seems his DCU is on hiatus until WBD is sold (the announced projects in development will still happen).

Gunn has also questioned his own future. And for fans wondering, it’s my understanding that Gunn can’t comment on the impending sale.
