Hunter Schafer, Melissa Barrera, Elle Fanning Up For Mystique In Marvel’s X-Men: Rumor

Marvel’s X-Men movie may be closing in on its Mystique.

Hunter Schafer, Melissa Barrera, and Elle Fanning are said to be in the running for the shapeshifter, according to the NO MORE MUTANTS account (@Nomoremutants22) on X.

“Hunter Schafer, Melissa Barrera, and Elle Fanning are among those vying for the role of Mystique,” reads the September 24 post.

The account carries X’s commentary label, and Marvel has said nothing about the role, so this one goes in the rumor column.

Schafer Is The Familiar Name Here

Schafer is the returning player. The Euphoria star has been tied to Mystique for months in our X-Men casting rumor tracker, and the last word had her still in the mix.

Barrera and Fanning are new to the conversation.

Barrera played Sam Carpenter in 2022’s Scream and Scream VI. Spyglass fired her from Scream 7 in 2023 over her social media posts about the Israel-Hamas war, and she went on to star in the vampire movie Abigail for the Scream directing team Radio Silence.

Mystique would be her first franchise role since the Scream exit.

Fanning arrives with the most recent box office. She starred in last November’s Predator: Badlands, the biggest hit in that franchise’s history, for the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios. Her credits also include The Great and A Complete Unknown.

Mystique Would Make It Nine

Marvel has eight actors locked in: Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, and Asa Germann as Angel.

Kevin Feige said at D23 that more casting was on the way, and the reports keep backing that up.

Beast and Iceman are said to be getting cast next, and Daniel Richtman claims three more roles are open, including a female part that gets bigger in the sequel.

Mystique herself would be new territory for the MCU. Rebecca Romijn played the shapeshifter in Fox’s original trilogy, and Jennifer Lawrence took over for the First Class era.

The character was created by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum and first appeared in 1978’s Ms. Marvel #16.

Jake Schreier directs X-Men, which hits theaters May 5, 2028.

The Fox-era mutants take their final bow first in Avengers: Doomsday on December 18. Everything confirmed on the reboot is in our Marvel’s X-Men (2028) guide.
