X-Men Release Date

Mark it down: Marvel’s X-Men opens in theaters May 5, 2028. Kevin Feige confirmed the date and the cast during Friday night’s D23 presentation on August 14, with giant golden X logos filling the arena as the team assembled on stage.

The date is a statement of intent. Avengers: Secret Wars closes out the Multiverse Saga on December 17, 2027, which makes X-Men the first movie of whatever the MCU becomes next. The mutants aren’t guest starring. They’re the relaunch.

It also lands almost exactly 20 years after Iron Man kicked everything off in May 2008.

X-Men Story: Marvel’s Mutant Relaunch

Marvel hasn’t released a synopsis, but the shape of the movie is coming into focus. This is a young team and a new generation of mutants, not a continuation of the Fox films. Sadie Sink has talked up the plan to start young, saying she screen tested with actors to lock in team chemistry ahead of cameras rolling.

Kevin Feige has already said Sink’s Jean Grey carries immense significance and a “key role in the future of the MCU,” and he confirmed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day leads directly into the mutant era.

The writers are on record about the approach. X-Men writer Lee Sung Jin told Deadline that he and Joanna Calo are leading with what makes these characters “universally relatable” before plots and world stakes, a character-first mandate we covered as the X-Men being for everybody. New Cyclops Kit Connor draws the same line, calling the reboot “a really different version, a different take” from the movies he grew up watching.

Feige said on the D23 stage that this is only the first group of actors, with more X-Men casting to come. Variety described the seven as the “inaugural” members of the team, and Empire’s report from the room noted Feige said more names would be confirmed in time.

Per Deadline, Jake Schreier and Marvel spent the summer auditioning, with a final round of screen tests after the Fourth of July. The D23 lineup was who was locked by showtime, not the whole movie.

The X-Men Villain: Adam Driver Is Mister Sinister

Marvel announced its villain while pretending it didn’t. Adam Driver beamed in via video to reveal he’s playing Nathaniel Milbury, and comic fans clocked the name instantly: Milbury is a longtime alias of Nathaniel Essex, better known as Mister Sinister. Driver even joked in his video that he was playing Magneto before dropping the Milbury name. And he wasn’t in California for the announcement. He was at Pinewood, “on this very lonely soundstage.”

The casting caps years of Marvel flirtation. Driver circled nearly every corner of the franchise, including reported talks for Reed Richards, before finally landing in the MCU on the wrong side of the fight. Bonus trivia: the MCU’s new Professor X and its first X-Men villain both came from HBO’s Girls.

Who’s Still Uncast: Wolverine, Beast, Magneto

Wolverine: Nobody has been cast. Deadline came away from D23 reading Hugh Jackman’s video beam-in as a goodbye where the reboot is concerned, even as his “hostage video” with Ryan Reynolds fueled the Doomsday side of the question. Since then, a viral rumor has claimed Henry Cavill is close to a multi-picture deal to play a “major mutant”. Marvel has confirmed nothing. Rumors have also suggested Marvel may keep Logan off the team at the start, holding him back as a mentor or a later reveal.

Beast: Charles Melton was the name attached for months, with claims his talks fell apart right before D23, though no trade ever reported he had the role in the first place. Peter Claffey has also been floated for Hank McCoy.

Magneto: The role is open, and Driver’s Magneto joke was the loudest reminder of the night. Marvel hasn’t said whether Magneto is even in the first film. The Daniel Day-Lewis chatter and the Denzel Washington and Colman Domingo thread never went anywhere, and Ian McKellen’s version returns in Avengers: Doomsday this December.

Mystique and the Hellfire Club: Mystique is expected, and fans are begging Marvel for Hunter Schafer again, though a viral post says the campaign is PR. Who Is Directing Marvel’s X-Men?

X-Men is directed by Jake Schreier, coming off Thunderbolts*, from a script by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo. Rotten Tomatoes’ updated explainer adds that Pat Scola is shooting the film with Kasra Farahani designing.

When Does X-Men Start Filming?

Plenty of outlets spent the week after D23 repeating that X-Men starts filming in 2027. The crew side says otherwise. A Filmbase industry listing puts the shoot beginning toward the end of summer, with the location listed as to be confirmed, either Ireland or Pinewood. The site’s roundup carries a disclaimer that it’s assembled from crew conversations rather than studio confirmation, so treat the window accordingly.

Adam Driver may have settled the location question himself, revealing his casting from a Pinewood soundstage during the D23 panel. The same crew update lists Avengers: Secret Wars on a five-week hiatus at Pinewood, with a return set for the end of September. One Marvel movie pausing and another starting on the same lot in the same window: stages open up, and crew becomes available.

An early start also hands Schreier something no Marvel movie has enjoyed in years: a genuinely long post-production runway to May 2028.

The X-Men D23 Reveal and the Backlash

Within hours, the roster had its first fight. A loud thread on X asked “where are the men,” counting four women and two men among the team members. That complaint misses what Feige actually said on stage: this was the first group of actors, with more casting still to come, a point Marvel put in writing in its own panel recap. Most of the classic X-Men still missing, from Wolverine to Beast to Gambit, happen to be men, and that is the half Feige says is coming.

Maya Boyd’s Storm casting drew its own debate the same night, with the Broadway newcomer winning over a big chunk of the crowd anyway.

How X-Men Connects to Avengers: Doomsday

The old guard gets its sendoff first. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen return in Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters this December, closing the Fox chapter while the new class waits in the wings. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on December 17, 2027, and X-Men is the first movie after it.

The bridge is Sadie Sink. Her Jean Grey debuted in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (spoilers at the link), and Feige confirmed the movie leads into the mutant era while explaining why Sink stayed secret for so long. The handoff question even reached the original: Famke Janssen says she’s not in Doomsday, and she’s not thrilled about it.

Then there’s the Jackman of it all. He begged for a Doomsday role in a surprise D23 video as Deadpool heckled, and fans called the “hostage video” confirmation for December, even as Deadline reads the same clip as a goodbye where the 2028 reboot is concerned.
