Andrew Guest was supposed to open the Wonder Man Season 2 writers room this month. Instead, he spent his weekend on TikTok explaining why a season he had already started writing no longer exists.
The showrunner broke his silence following news that Marvel canceled the series despite a previously announced Season 2 renewal, and in a little over a minute he closed every exit Disney might have used.
“I feel how you all feel. And I just want to clear up what I can here,” Guest said. “This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works.”
Guest added that scheduling was never the problem, for Destin Daniel Cretton or for anyone else attached.
The Season Was Already Happening
What Guest described is not a project in limbo that quietly wound down. It is a production that was moving.
“Yahya, Destin, Sir Ben, and I all loved making this show. All felt passionately about continuing to do it and were eager to. Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared. The writer’s room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year.”
He went further. The Season 2 premiere script was already finished.
“Even though the writer’s room hadn’t started, I had written the first episode of season two. And we had an outline for where the season would go. And everyone felt really good about it. It was gonna be a really incredible season that, hopefully, surpassed season one.”
“Numbers Aren’t Really Shared With Me”
Then Guest got to the decision itself, and this is the part worth reading twice.
“And there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did. And that’s essentially all I really know. Numbers aren’t really shared with me.”
The man running the show was never shown the data. He did not need to be. The only public numbers ever attached to this series were brutal, with the show falling off the Nielsen Top 10 after a single week and posting the weakest launch of any Marvel Studios live-action series. Disney’s own behavior said the rest, from giving the premiere away on YouTube to running a limited Hulu window hunting for an audience.
Here is what that timeline actually means. Contracts signed, premiere written, room opening in weeks. Disney and Marvel killed the season at the last possible moment they could walk away without spending real money on it. That is not a creative call. That is a line item getting cut before it starts billing.
And “even though a few months ago it did” is the sentence Disney should have to answer for. The ratings collapsed in February. The renewal came in March anyway. Nothing about the show changed between March and July. Something inside Disney did.
Guest Backs The Fans And His Star
Guest also gave a nod to the backlash, which has fans calling the cancellation robbery given the show’s 91 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and Emmy recognition.
“I appreciate everybody getting out there and letting your voices be heard about how you feel about this. There’s important conversations being had online about the kinds of stories that we’re prioritising, and the kind of shows that platforms want to make. I hope people are listening.”
He closed with a campaign pitch for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who earned an Emmy nomination for playing Simon Williams after Kevin Feige personally recruited him for the role.
“I also hope that Emmy voters are thinking about Yahya and how much he deserves an Emmy for the incredible work he did on this show.”
Abdul-Mateen II has already responded to the cancellation himself, telling fans the show worked and signing off with “See you at the EMMYS.” Between the star and the showrunner, the people who made Wonder Man are conceding nothing. The company that ordered a second season and then took it back is the only party that has yet to explain itself.
