Update 8/21/26: Luminate has now put figures to it. Wonder Man kept 52 percent of its viewers to the finale, one point under the 53 percent a new Disney+ series needs to be safe from cancellation.
Update 8/20/26: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has confirmed he was told the same thing, saying he was pointed at viewership numbers he was never actually shown.
Update 8/19/26: The pipeline may not be as empty as it looked. Puck reports Marvel has multiple live-action Disney+ series in development with announcements expected soon.
It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out, but The Ankler is now reporting exactly why Disney killed Wonder Man: the viewership.
“Multiple sources say Disney ultimately didn’t feel like the viewership for Wonder Man justified the costs associated with doing the show and pulled the plug before a season two writers’ room even opened,” per the site.
That is the whole story in one sentence. So the reason is not scheduling, not a movie pivot, and not creative differences. It’s viewership against cost, decided in a room the creative team was never invited into.

The Numbers Disney Never Released
Disney has never published a single viewership figure for Wonder Man. It did not have to. The public record already told the story.
As we’ve covered, the series charted on Nielsen exactly once, posting 618 million minutes across a full eight-episode binge drop, then dropped off the Top 10 the following week and never came back.
The Ankler‘s sourcing confirms the internal numbers matched the public collapse.
Whatever Disney was looking at behind closed doors, it agreed with what Nielsen printed in February.

It Backs Up The Showrunner’s Account
The report also lines up with what showrunner Andrew Guest told fans on TikTok, where he revealed he had already written the Season 2 premiere and that there is no movie in the works.
Guest said the decision came down internally between Disney and Marvel and that numbers were never shared with him. He also said the writers room was supposed to open this month.
The Ankler confirms the other half: Disney pulled the plug before that room ever opened. The company walked away at the last moment it could do so without spending real money, exactly the timing Guest described from the inside.

Wonder Man Was Part Of A Much Bigger Problem
And now we know Wonder Man wasn’t some isolated cancellation.
As we reported Friday, Marvel is cutting back on live-action Disney+ shows following VisionQuest, as Disney finally starts matching the amount it spends on these series with the audiences actually watching them.
Wonder Man may be the clearest example of why.
The series charted on Nielsen for one week, disappeared, and never came back. Disney still announced Season 2, but when it came time to actually open the writers room and start spending money again, the numbers apparently couldn’t justify it.
Now the same math appears to be hitting Marvel’s entire live-action streaming operation. Beyond VisionQuest, Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, and the occasional smaller project, the Disney+ pipeline is drying up.
Wonder Man now goes down as the first Marvel Studios series to have a publicly announced renewal rescinded, even after Yahya Abdul-Mateen II landed an Emmy nomination for the role.
Disney spent years throwing massive budgets at Marvel streaming shows while the audience kept shrinking. Wonder Man is where the company finally looked at the bill, looked at the viewership, and said no.
Now Marvel appears to be saying the same thing about the entire strategy.
