Two more shows from James Gunn’s original DCU slate are dead.
Waller and Paradise Lost have both been scrapped at DC Studios, according to The Ankler‘s Lesley Goldberg.
The news comes buried in the outlet’s deep dive into Lanterns and its tortured seven-year road to this Sunday’s HBO premiere.
And if the Waller news sounds familiar, it should.
Last week, when Viola Davis boarded the Paramount+ thriller Ascent, I said her Amanda Waller series looked dead.
Three days later, here we are, and Variety and EW also confirm the cancellations.
So Much For “Extreme Development”
Back in April, Gunn was confronted with rumors that both Paradise Lost and Booster Gold had been canceled.
His response was that the Wonder Woman prequel was in “extreme development.”
That was less than four months ago.
Now Paradise Lost is reportedly dead, while Booster Gold has lost its writer and is being “rebuilt” from scratch.
Waller had been in trouble even longer.
Peter Safran admitted back in February 2025 that the scripts weren’t coming together, and HBO boss Casey Bloys later made it clear the series wasn’t on the runway.
Waller Never Made It Out Of Development
Waller was announced in January 2023 as part of Gunn and Safran’s “Gods and Monsters” slate.
The Peacemaker spinoff was supposed to bring Viola Davis back as Amanda Waller, a role she has played since 2016, with Watchmen‘s Christal Henry and Doom Patrol‘s Jeremy Carver attached to write.
The original plan was for the show to bridge Peacemaker Seasons 1 and 2.
Instead, Peacemaker Season 2 came and went last fall, losing nearly half its audience, while Waller never received a production date, release window, or official greenlight.
Davis has already moved on.
She’s now starring in and executive producing Ascent, which shoots in Los Angeles in 2027 for the streamer owned by the company trying to buy Warner Bros. Discovery.
Paradise Lost was announced in that same January 2023 presentation and pitched as DC’s Game of Thrones: a political drama set on Themyscira before Wonder Woman was born.
It never publicly made it beyond development.
Wonder Woman Gets A Cameo, Not A Series
So where does that leave Wonder Woman?
As I exclusively reported, Adria Arjona is playing her in Man of Tomorrow, and we’re now being told the role is more of a cameo.
That lines up pretty well with Paradise Lost getting killed.
The Wonder Woman side of the DCU isn’t getting a big Themyscira series anymore. Right now, it’s getting a walk-on in somebody else’s movie.
Under the incoming owners, the picture flips. Per our newest reporting, keep an eye on Gal Gadot’s schedule for Wonder Woman 3.
It also fits the contract situation.
Paramount has dibs on anything long-term at Warner Bros., which is why Man of Tomorrow keeps stacking cameo deals, the kind of short-term paper Paramount doesn’t get to review.
Remember, Arjona said at Comic-Con that she hadn’t filmed anything despite production running since April. Well, Gunn just confirmed they are in day 79 of filming.
Cameos can be written and shot late. A full Wonder Woman series can’t.
What Happened To The Original DCU TV Slate?
Go back to the five TV shows announced with Gods and Monsters in January 2023.
Creature Commandos made it out and has a Season 2 coming at some point.
Lanterns finally premieres Sunday on HBO, nearly seven years after Green Lantern development first started under Greg Berlanti.
According to The Ankler, Berlanti’s team wrote eight scripts — an entire first season — before HBO Max balked at the expensive space-opera version.
Marc Guggenheim said the network’s note basically amounted to wanting “True Detective with power rings.”
The Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King version took over in 2024.
Waller: dead.
Paradise Lost: dead.
Booster Gold: back at square one, reportedly.
The report says Gunn, Safran, and Bloys are now searching for a new writer after David Jenkins announced his version won’t be moving forward, which matches TheWrap‘s report that the project is being revamped.
The Ankler also reports that DC and HBO passed on series pitches involving Catwoman and Poison Ivy, while The Penguin Season 2 remains in limbo.
Even Lanterns hasn’t been renewed yet, although HBO has already hired a co-showrunner for a potential Season 2 while two key writers have exited.
DC’s TV Pipeline Is Drying Up
Bloys has already said DC shows are greenlit script by script, not because something appeared on a giant master slate years earlier.
And as I reported last week, the merger agreement already gives Paramount veto power over DC’s long-term future while the $110 billion deal remains frozen ahead of a March 2027 trial.
Meanwhile, the only other DC television project showing obvious movement is the Jimmy Olsen/Gorilla Grodd mockumentary, which continues casting despite still not having a greenlight.
Our insiders say that project exists in part to keep visible development activity going while the DCU’s bigger pieces sit idle.
Waller spent years in development.
Paradise Lost was supposedly in “extreme development.”
Now both are gone.
So enjoy Lanterns on Sunday.
