The MCU’s X-Men reboot may have found its heavy.
Wagner Moura — Pablo Escobar himself — is reportedly Marvel Studios’ top choice to play Mister Sinister, the classic X-Men villain Fox spent years teasing and never delivered.
The claim comes from scooper MyTimeToShineHello, who posted Wednesday.
File it under rumor. Marvel Studios has not officially announced a single actor for the new X-Men — worth repeating every time one of these names surfaces — and “top choice” is studio-speak for a wish list, not a signed deal.
That said, unlike most of the names floating around the reboot so far, this one lands on the villain side of the board, and it’s a big one.
From Pablo Escobar To Nathaniel Essex
Moura broke out internationally as Pablo Escobar in Netflix’s Narcos, and the decade since has been one long heat check: Alex Garland’s Civil War, Apple’s Dope Thief, voicing Death — the single best thing in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish — and a Best Actor win at Cannes for The Secret Agent that turned him into an awards-season fixture.
That’s the resume of an actor studios chase, not the other way around.
If Marvel is really circling Moura for its X-Men big bad, it signals the reboot’s villain is being built around a performance, not a visual effect, a lesson the Fox films learned the hard way with Apocalypse.
Mister Sinister Has Never Made It To Live Action
Created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri in 1987’s Uncanny X-Men #221, Nathaniel Essex is a Victorian geneticist who cut a deal with Apocalypse, made himself immortal, and has spent the century-plus since obsessing over mutant DNA, the Summers and Grey bloodlines in particular.
He cloned Jean Grey. He created Madelyne Pryor. And in the recent Krakoa era of the comics (Immortal X-Men, Sins of Sinister), he graduated into the franchise’s best villain, full stop.
Hollywood knows it, too, Fox just could never close.
The Essex Corp. post-credits scene in X-Men: Apocalypse was reportedly seeding Sinister for Wolverine 3 and the Channing Tatum Gambit movie; both went nowhere.
Essex Corp. got name-dropped again in The New Mutants. A decade of teases, zero payoff. The closest fans have gotten is animation, where Sinister served as a main villain in X-Men ’97. The MCU casting him for real — with a Cannes winner, no less — would pay off all those dead ends in one move.
Where Marvel’s X-Men Reboot Stands
Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*) is directing, with his Beef creator Lee Sung Jin writing alongside The Bear‘s Joanna Calo — the duo recently told Deadline they’re starting from scratch and confirmed the X-Men are for everybody.
Kevin Feige has framed the film as a youth-focused reset arriving after Avengers: Secret Wars, separate from the Fox-era X-Men actors returning in Avengers: Doomsday this December.
The casting chatter is running hot: Sabrina Carpenter, Sydney Sweeney, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sadie Sink have all been floated for the mutant side, and Obsession breakout Inde Navarrette says she’s already met with Schreier. With Comic-Con two weeks away, expect it to get louder before it gets clearer.
