Henry Cavill’s Voltron movie has been quietly screening for Amazon’s own test audience, and by their account it is close to done.
Multiple posters on the Voltron subreddit say the movie was shown to members of Amazon Preview, the invite-only research panel Amazon uses to test unreleased movies and shows, in late July.
One described it as complete except for some unfinished CGI.
It’s the second known round of test screenings, following the rough-cut leak from December, and it comes with New York Comic Con six weeks out and Amazon still targeting 2027 on Prime Video.
None of this is official. Amazon hasn’t said a word about the movie since its Upfront in May. But the timeline lines up.
“Robot Cats In Space”
The thread was posted to r/Voltron over the weekend by a user whose friend is in the Amazon Preview program.
The friend told them they watched a movie “about a month ago” about “robot cats in space,” enjoyed it a lot, compared it to the early Transformers films, and said it was “basically complete bar some unfinished CGI.”
A second poster said they saw it “just under a month ago” through the same program. Their take was cooler: “It looked ok,” and there were no opening titles because the movie was still in production.
Amazon Preview is Amazon’s version of a test screening.
Selected customers get emailed links to unreleased projects — test movies, pilots, marketing materials — sign an NDA, watch, and fill out a survey, sometimes for a small gift-card credit. Which is also why the details are thin: these people aren’t supposed to be talking.
Compare that to December. The test screening leak Cosmic Book News covered then came from a very early rough cut with unfinished effects.
Eight months later, the movie is going in front of Amazon’s consumer panel with the effects mostly done. That’s the back end of the process, not the front.
The Math Says It Should Be Done
Voltron wrapped filming in Australia in May 2025.
At San Diego Comic-Con that July, Sterling K. Brown told the Paradise panel the movie was aimed at “the 2027 crowd” and that post-production would run roughly 48 weeks (via Deadline). Count 48 weeks from the end of May 2025, and you land in late April 2026.
In March, producer Todd Lieberman told The Wrap the film was in post and would be released in 2027. On May 11, Amazon MGM confirmed the Prime Video release at its Upfront with no date, no trailer, and no first look, then tried to spin the streaming route as the plan all along.
Amazon Preview screenings in late July with the CGI nearly finished fit that schedule exactly. The movie appears to be finishing on time. Amazon just hasn’t started selling it. The IMDb page still doesn’t have a poster.
Why October
Two dates matter.
New York Comic Con runs October 8-11 at the Javits Center. ReedPop’s first programming wave had no Prime Video panel, but that’s normal: Prime Video’s 2025 NYCC lineup (Batman, Invincible, Cross, Hazbin Hotel, BAT-FAM) wasn’t announced until September 25 last year.
A Prime Video announcement in late September would be right on schedule, ReedPop says more panels are coming, and one Reddit commenter pointed out the Empire Stage and Main Stage still have room.
VoltCon, the fan-run Voltron convention, is October 10-11 in Indianapolis, the same weekend.
That’s where Amazon MGM debuted Rawson Marshall Thurber’s first video message from the set on October 26, 2024.
Either venue works for a first look or both, and NYCC puts the big coverage in the room.
San Diego Comic-Con came and went in July with Prime Video’s slate going to Blade Runner 2099, The Rings of Power, Reacher, and Carrie. No Voltron. If Amazon is going to show this movie to anyone this year, October is what’s left.
A trailer in October sets up a 2027 date. Cosmic Book News floated a 2027 release back in December when the first leak surfaced, and nothing since has moved it.
The He-Man Factor
The streaming decision now looks like exactly what it was.
Amazon announced the Prime Video route on May 11, three and a half weeks before Masters of the Universe opened.
He-Man then opened to $29.3 million, finished at $113.8 million worldwide against a $400 million to $500 million break-even, and hit Prime Video on July 22, where it topped all of streaming its first week with 1.17 billion minutes on Nielsen.
Amazon has now watched a $170 million-plus ’80s nostalgia play bomb in theaters and potentially be a win on Prime. That is the entire business case for Voltron skipping theaters, and it gives the studio every reason to finally start marketing the thing.
The r/Voltron thread turned into a He-Man argument almost immediately, which is the fandom’s real anxiety.
One poster refuses to get excited after being “disproportionately disappointed” by He-Man. Others called it pitch perfect and said it deserves to be topping the streaming charts.
I still have my original Lions, so here is my concern, and it’s the same one I had about MOTU.
The December leak described Voltron‘s tone as intentionally cheesy, Power Rangers meets Top Gun: Maverick, which is the same goofy lane Masters of the Universe drove into on its way to a B CinemaScore and a 3.8 on Amazon’s own storefront.
A finished movie and He-Man’s billion-minute week don’t fix that. The trailer will tell us whether Thurber did.
Henry Cavill’s Role And The Cast
Cavill is rumored to have a smaller but important supporting role as the king of Altea, the Galaxy Alliance’s base of operations, with a standout sword fight scene.
Daniel Quinn-Toye leads as a new Earth-born pilot, Sterling K. Brown is said to be playing Emperor Zarkon, and Rita Ora is Haggar the witch.
IMDb now lists 17 credited cast members: Henry Cavill, Daniel Quinn Toye, Sterling K. Brown, Nathan Jones (Super Soldier), Alba Baptista, Rita Ora, Laura Gordon, Samson Kayo, Tim Griffin, John Kim, Keanu Karim, Tim Robards, Roberto Zenca (Galran Emperor), Tharanya Tharan, Matthew Scully (Galran Officer), Kevin Spink, and Giovanni Adams.
Rawson Marshall Thurber directs from a screenplay by Ellen Shanman and Thurber. Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar, Thurber, and David Hoberman produce, and Hasbro has a full toy line lined up.
Voltron looks to be set for a Prime Video release in 2027. No date, poster, or trailer has been released. All we have is fan art, but our Mega-thrusters are go!
