Marvel’s VisionQuest booth at D23 just delivered the reveal fans have waited eleven years for: James Spader’s face.
The display’s artwork glitched over Friday to show Ultron with half his face machine and half human, giving the first official look at Spader’s human form in the series, where he appears as both AI and man.
It marks Spader’s return to the role for the first time since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, now playing something like a father figure to the android he built, while presumably still being Ultron about it.
Inside The VisionQuest Booth
The booth itself is a WandaVision fever dream, with a retro sitcom living room, glitchy Vision-shaped cutouts in the wallpaper, and White Vision’s upgraded suit standing in a doorway framed by Hex-style honeycomb panels.
Costuming for the series comes from designer Sarah Young, who also worked on Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Costumes Connected To The Maximoff Family
Per Deadline’s coverage from the floor, the display also features new costumes described as connected to the Maximoff family, including a red-caped, crowned look and a purple outfit.
That tracks with the casting, as Ruaridh Mollica plays Tucker, the vessel for Tommy Maximoff, aka Speed, paying off the Agatha All Along ending tease.
Is That The Original Human Torch?
The TV in the sitcom set plays concept art of a mysterious fiery figure standing in a burning room, and fans think they know exactly who it is.
Rumor has it the figure is Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, as the chest and shoulder design resembles the costume Hammond wore in the comics.
Hammond is Marvel’s first-ever superhero, a synthetic man created by Professor Phineas T. Horton who fought alongside the Invaders in World War II, and he was already Easter-egged in Captain America: The First Avenger as the synthetic man in the glass case at Howard Stark’s Expo.
An android hero making his debut in Marvel’s android show would be the obvious play, but consider this one unconfirmed until Marvel says otherwise.
Teaser Expected Tonight
The first public teaser for the series is expected to drop following its debut at D23 on Friday, which lines up with tonight’s Disney Entertainment Showcase.
The series wraps up the WandaVision trilogy that ran through Agatha All Along, with Paul Bettany’s White Vision trying to live the memories he was given, and Terry Matalas of Star Trek: Picard running the show.
The cast also includes T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, the so-called Bride of Ultron, alongside the human forms of J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., and E.D.I.T.H., as we covered when Marvel unveiled the series at Disney’s Upfronts.
Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday costumes are also on display across the floor, including a second Doctor Doom costume.
VisionQuest premieres October 14 on Disney+.
