We finally get some definite answers from Vin Diesel regarding his future with Marvel Studios and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
In a lengthy conversation with good friend, Maria Menounos, Diesel goes in-depth about the meetings that took place regarding the Marvel movies.
Diesel lets it be known that the official talks were about a movie for 2016 where he lets it be known Marvel Studios Phase 3 will feature a “merging of brands.”
Vin Diesel wouldn’t say more, but Maria Menounos said she knew what he was talking about.
The conversation also turned to Groot, with Diesel rumored for the role for sometime, but never confirming.
Vin Diesel goes on to state that Marvel, Kevin Feige and James Gunn came up with an idea to get Diesel involved in the now, and they sent over some concept art.
During the interview Menounos also mentions that Diesel’s daughter confirmed Groot, with a “yes,” and her official YouTube channel states “…announcing that he’s officially joined the cast of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ as classic character Groot.” More on that below.

Regarding the Guardians of the Galaxy movie concept art, Diesel was blown away and responded, “Oh, my God. This is some of the best conceptual art I have ever seen in my life.”
“They want me to play a tree,” he continued. “They said there is something akin to Iron Giant with this tree. And everyone knows I’m a sucker for the Iron Giant.”
“When Kevin Feige and James Gunn said we want you to voice a character that is historically known for saying only one line, it was not dissimilar to David Twohy saying ‘I want you to do Riddick, but I don’t want you to interact with anyone in the whole first act.’ There is something challenging about that and fun about that. So where someone else would have said about that ‘this is crazy it’s one line,’ I thought about it as an insanely fun challenge,” Diesel offered.
Vin Diesel then went on to tell the story how he decided to do the character. He took the concept art and showed his daughter the picture asking, “Which character is daddy?” His daughter immediately pointed to Groot.
“From that moment on, I was Groot,” Diesel confirmed.
Vin also went on to confirm that he will be doing mo-cap work for the character also stating that if Peter Jackson ever gave him the call do to a dragon he would be up for that.
“I haven’t done the mo-cap, I haven’t done the voice-over, yet,” Diesel stated about Groot.
