Viggo Mortensen as Zod in Superman: The Man Of Steel (2012)?

Well, this is the best Superman related casting news I’ve heard!

We already know Ursa is set to show in Zack Snyder’s new Superman, now word comes from the Hollywood Reporter that Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings) is up for the role of General Zod.

Apparently, Mortensen has not yet signed for Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, and is at the top of Snyder’s list to portray the evil Kryptonian General. It is stated that if Mortensen doesn’t sign on to Snow White, he will be freed up for the role in Superman.

According to the Hollywood Reporter’s sources, Mortensen is just a “person of interest” and there haven’t been any talks. They say, this is “much like” with Kevin Costner and the “Jonathan Kent” role — but we have already been told Costner is a done deal. Maybe Mortensen is, too?

It’s stated, Snyder is meeting potential actors for both roles of “Pa” Kent and General Zod —  in addition to three female roles.

Director Zack Snyder has said he thinks Superman should be more physical, could we be seeing some sort of remake of the classic Superman II? Or, perhaps, something more as rumor of the Superman-killer Doomsday have been floating around, as well.

Stay tuned to Cosmic Book News as more updates become available.

Superman: The Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill as the Last(?) Kryptonian is set for a December 2012 release date.
