Uwe Boll decided to promote Citizen Vigilante by opening himself up to questions on Reddit. It went about as well as you’d expect.
The German director behind the Armie Hammer vigilante thriller ā banned at one time in Germany, blasted out for free on X by Elon Musk, and currently the reactionary internet’s favorite movie ā held an AMA on r/movies on Friday, and the left-leaning Reddit crowd showed up with knives out.
The AMA post itself was downvoted to zero, the top questions were open insults, the comments locked, and Boll eventually stormed off telling everyone to go watch soccer instead of “wasting my time.”
“To Top Them All”: Uwe Boll vs. Reddit
The very first exchange set the tone. Asked why he keeps making movies “even after already making some of the worst movies ever,” Boll replied: “to top them all.” (The follow-up, from the same user: “I mean, OK, but when are you going to start trying that?”)
From there it was a firing squad, with Boll answering in his trademark blunt, broken English:
Asked how he keeps getting work: “money.” Asked (in German) what ruined him: “geld” ā money again. Asked which of his own films is the worst: “Bluberella.” Asked how it feels to win the Razzie for Worst Director: “love it.” Asked if he could take Tommy Wiseau in a fight: “sure.”
One German user brought up Boll’s old line that actors are “whores” and asked if he’s now “a whore yourself pleasing right wingers.” Boll’s one-word answer: “absolut.”
And when a user reminded him that Blizzard famously refused to sell him the World of Warcraft rights ā “especially not to you” ā Boll cracked, “good decision… and as you saw then they made a masterrpiece movie LOL.” Another redditor then pointed out that not a single Boll film has a higher Rotten Tomatoes critics score than Warcraft‘s 29 percent. Ouch.
As for why he cast Armie Hammer despite the actor’s baggage: “Great actor and fits into the movie.”
The feeling may not be mutual. As we covered this week, Hammer was reportedly in tears the first time he watched the finished film, telling his own camp it was “hateful” and “disgusting.”
Uwe Boll Defends Citizen Vigilante: “That Was the Point”
The most upvoted question in the entire thread ā asking how Boll responds to critics who call the film “a weird anti-migrant fantasy” ā went unanswered. But Boll did engage on the film itself in a few places.
When one user pointed out the apparent irony that Hammer’s vigilante is himself an immigrant living in another country and killing other immigrants, Boll answered: “that was the point.”
Pressed over the film’s anti-Muslim accusations ā the grounds Germany cited when it blocked the movie from theaters ā Boll offered the all-time classic: “i have muslim friends ….”
The ugliest moment came when a user confronted Boll over reposting tweets that called mass deportations “the moderate option” and fantasized about “thousands of men enacting the justice that our own anti-White governments refuse to do,” asking if that’s the message his movie endorses.
Boll’s sarcastic reply ā “really ….? i shouldnt blindy retweet anything” ā was downvoted to -12, his worst-rated comment of the day.
He also declared, unprompted: “By the way IMDB is bought and paid for ….owned by the studios.”
Critics at 6%, Audience at 93%: The Citizen Vigilante Divide
Boll’s parting shot was a full rant: “Guys, why a lot of you are stuck in the past. You love to hate and trash me … watch RAMPAGE, STOIC, ASSAULT ON WALLSTREET, FIRST SHIFT, HEART OF AMERICA, POSTAL, TUNNELRATS, RUN, DARFUR and open your eyes. Forget my name and just watch the movies. Look at the ratings at amazon and you see what the REAL AUDIENCE believes …. ! You are so in love of bashing me that you forgot yourself. I wish you all a great evening and now watch soccer in TV instead of wasting my time here.”
Reddit’s response: “Yes but they’re all sāt Uwe” and “Your latest movie is just as bad as the old ones.”
Here’s the thing, though, the numbers say the AMA was a microcosm of the whole Citizen Vigilante story.
The film sits at a 6 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes (only 16 reviews) against a 93 percent audience score, and it hit #1 on Apple and Amazon after Musk streamed it free on X for 48 hours following the German ban.
Boll got buried on Reddit ā a platform that leans hard to the left ā while the paying audience keeps pushing his movie up the charts. Whatever you think of the film, that critic-audience canyon is the story of 2026 so far.
Boll Talks Citizen Vigilante 2: “Playing in the USA”
Buried in the wreckage was a genuine update. Asked what to expect from the sequel, Boll wrote: “CV2 will be different ā¦.and playing in the USA.”
That wasn’t a slip. Boll had already announced Citizen Vigilante 2 is officially set for 2027 on X, complete with an AI-generated poster billing Armie Hammer and the tagline “He Comes to America” ā and per Puck, the sequel is already in preproduction.
Whether Hammer actually returns is the open question; his own camp says it would take “life-changing money.” Boll, for his part, doesn’t sound like a man second-guessing anything.
He’s been getting destroyed by critics for 25 years and outlasted most of them. A few thousand downvotes weren’t going to be the thing that finally stopped him.
