Andrew Garfield’s ‘The Uprising’ Hits Digital Only 18 Days After Theaters

The Uprising is already done with theaters-only. Andrew Garfield’s medieval epic hits digital platforms today, September 29, available to buy or rent with no subscription required.

That is 18 days after the movie opened on September 11.

It is not quite a record, but it is close to the floor. Focus Features’ parent company Universal struck the deal with theater chains back in 2020 that lets its movies go home after just 17 days, and that fast lane is the standard treatment for its underperformers.

The Uprising qualified.

Three Weekends And Out

Garfield’s Peasants’ Revolt epic opened to $3.3 million in 2,068 theaters, landing in eighth place. It’s the lowest domestic opening of Garfield’s career.

Weekend two fell 63.6% to $1.2 million.

By weekend three, Focus had pulled the movie from 1,846 locations, leaving 223. It made $85,045.

The totals: $6.4 million domestic and $7.7 million worldwide, against a reported $20 million production budget.

“Well, we didn’t have a lot of money for this film, has to be said, but it’s got great scale, I think,” Paul Greengrass told the crowd at the AMC fan event earlier this month.

Opening night audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore, and critics landed at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score at 64%.

The numbers cap a rocky month for the movie. Focus rebranded it “The Rise of Robin Hood” two weeks before release and spent a week getting corrected about who Robin Hood stole from.

Garfield then spent opening week in a fight over his hope that billionaires would be “scared sh-tless” by the film, a fight he says he never saw because he quit social media.

The 4K SteelBook Says ‘Rise Or Die’

The physical release is dated too.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD set for November 3, including a Limited Edition SteelBook with “Rise or Die” printed across the top.

Extras include deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes featurettes, with additional bonus content through participating retailers.

A streaming date has not been announced.

When Garfield’s billionaires comment blew up on the Cosmic Book News subreddit, one reader saw this coming: “He will sell it on Bezos Amazon in weeks to make Bezos even more money.”

That was three weeks ago. The Uprising is on Amazon today.
