UPDATE Aug. 23: Reynolds keeps one of them. The Odyssey has passed The Dark Knight as Nolan’s biggest movie ever in North America at $539.1 million, but Deadpool & Wolverine‘s $636.7 million is still the domestic R-rated record, and Deadline pegs The Odyssey‘s finish around $575 million.
Ryan Reynolds gave up the crown.
Reynolds posted to both X and Instagram on Wednesday congratulating the cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, ending the two-year reign of Deadpool & Wolverine.
Then he made the joke at his own expense: “That is one helluva car.”
The Honda Odyssey Bit Pays Off
The post came attached to a 36-second clip featuring Deadpool & Wolverine and The Odyssey footage, captioned “Hugh Jackman and The Odyssey Movie.” It uses the song “You’re the One That I Want” by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John from the 1978 movie musical Grease.
It is the minivan sequence. Wade Wilson and Logan tearing each other to pieces inside a Honda Odyssey while Matt Damon is shown as Odysseus walking with his men through the woods.
Reynolds has been running the Honda Odyssey gag since Deadpool 2.
Losing the all-time R-rated record to a movie called The Odyssey and then pretending the congratulations are about the minivan is the kind of thing nobody else in Hollywood bothers to do well.
The X version pulled 221,000 views and 10,000 likes inside the first hour. The Instagram version cleared 77,000 likes in the same window with comments limited.
The Number He Just Gave Away
Deadpool & Wolverine finished its 2024 run at $1.338 billion worldwide, split $636.7 million domestic and $701.3 million international, per Box Office Mojo.
The Odyssey stood at roughly $1.30 billion through Monday, with $508.8 million domestic and $789.4 million international. That left a gap under $40 million with China only five days into release.
Reynolds’ post is the confirmation the gap closed.
Two Very Different Roads To $1.3 Billion
The splits are the part worth staring at.
Deadpool & Wolverine leaned on North America for 47.6 percent of its worldwide total. The Odyssey has taken 60.8 percent of its gross from overseas.
That is how a nearly three-hour Greek myth adaptation with no franchise behind it outran a Marvel team-up built on sixteen years of X-Men nostalgia and the biggest R-rated opening weekend in history.
The budgets are not close either. Disney spent a reported $537 million on production and marketing combined for Deadpool & Wolverine. Universal made The Odyssey for $250 million.
Whatever Hollywood spent the last decade telling itself about intellectual property, the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history is now an original swing where the director’s name is the only brand on the poster.
Fans Want Deadpool To Take It Back
The replies went exactly where you would expect.
Multiple top comments on the Instagram post pushed Reynolds toward a fourth R-rated Deadpool movie specifically to reclaim the record, and the highest-liked reply framed it as a record he needs to go win back.
Reynolds recently said the next Deadpool movie is going to be great. He also crashed Comic-Con, and Reynolds and Hugh Jackman did that video for D23 and are now both expected in Avengers: Doomsday.
The Record Is Still Moving
The Odyssey was already Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever, past the $1.085 billion The Dark Knight Rises held since 2012, and the second-biggest movie of 2026 behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
It also holds the all-time IMAX record at $289.3 million, past Avatar‘s $271 million, as the first narrative feature shot entirely on IMAX film cameras.
China opened Aug. 14 across more than 20,000 screens. Japan does not open until Sept. 11. Domestically the film crossed $500 million in its fifth weekend on a 27 percent drop, which is not the shape of a run that is winding down.
Reynolds conceded a record that has not stopped climbing.
