The Odyssey Box Office: $117 Million Opening Projected, Best Live-Action Debut Of 2026

UPDATE: The Saturday numbers came in even higher. The Odyssey opened to $120.5 million domestic with an ‘A’ CinemaScore, and its $257.8 million global debut is the biggest of Nolan’s career.

The records are falling. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is headed for a $50 million first Friday including previews and a $117 million three-day opening, per Deadline’s Friday afternoon update, with rival studios projecting as high as $120 million.

That lands at the very top of the $80 million to $120 million tracking range and follows Thursday’s $17.6 million previews, the best of the year.

The Records

The $117 million would be the biggest opening of Matt Damon’s career as a lead, blowing past 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum at $69.2 million.

It’s also the best live-action opening of 2026, topping Michael‘s $97.2 million, and the third-biggest debut of the year overall behind only Toy Story 5 at $159.6 million and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at $131.7 million.

The R-rated records stack up too. It’s the biggest R-rated opening weekend of 2026, ahead of Backrooms at $81.4 million, and the biggest R-rated opening in Universal’s history, beating Fifty Shades of Grey at $85.1 million.

For Nolan, it slots in as the third-best start of his career behind The Dark Knight Rises at $160.8 million and The Dark Knight at $158.4 million, and well clear of Oppenheimer‘s $82.4 million.

Overseas, Deadline pegs the global debut near $40 million and counting, with the worldwide weekend outlook at $200 million-plus.
