UPDATE 9/1: The market got it all back and then some, as Take-Two closed at $239.93 after the Extended Look with Newzoo estimating $4.5 billion in sales by launch week, while Cyberleek reportedly pulled roughly $270,000 out of its memecoin hours before Rockstar’s Netflix reveal.
UPDATE: Rockstar has finally responded, calling the leaks “heartbreaking” in a statement that never confirms a breach occurred. A federal court also granted Take-Two subpoenas targeting Microsoft and Discord to unmask Cyberleek, and Stop Killing Games has publicly repudiated the campaign. GameSpot’s post promoting this story was later struck in Take-Two’s bulk DMCA sweep, over an official screenshot Rockstar itself distributes to the press.
In September 2022, after the biggest leak in Rockstar history, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick called it “really frustrating and upsetting” and assured investors that it had no financial impact.
This time, Wall Street didn’t wait for his assessment.
Take-Two stock dropped from $248.13 before Tuesday’s leaks to as low as the $232 range by Thursday morning, a slide Insider Gaming, citing Yahoo Finance data, calculated at $2.83 billion in market cap erased in under two days.
The stock clawed back to $240.15 by Thursday’s close, still roughly $8 per share below where it sat before the word “Cyberleek” existed.
Stock moves are never one thing, and nobody can attribute a drop to a single cause with certainty. But the timing is not subtle, and neither is what happened between Tuesday and Thursday to change the market’s math.
The “LEEK” Written In Bullet Holes
The leaks escalated this week. Specifically, they escalated from what leaked to who is holding it.
The fifth clip, titled simply “plane,” runs over two minutes and shows Jason flying a biplane over Vice City in broad daylight. Skyscrapers, traffic, waterways, even the radio interface, in what fans are calling the best look yet at the scale of Leonida.
Then comes the part that reportedly rattled everyone. Jason lands, walks up to a wall, and fires individual shots until the bullet holes spell out one word: LEEK.
That is not something you find in a folder of stolen clips. That is a signature, produced on demand, inside the game.
Footage like that could only come from direct control of a playable build, meaning Cyberleek either has the build or has direct access to someone actively playing it.
Supporting evidence has piled up. Jason wears the same outfit across multiple clips, suggesting they came from one ongoing play session rather than a scattered archive.
What “Playable Build” Does And Doesn’t Mean
Now the necessary line between confirmed and claimed.
What the footage demonstrates is control of a build. It does not prove Cyberleek holds the complete, release-ready game, and the build’s exact age is unconfirmed. Early reports pegged it as an older build, but the in-game radio includes a Tate McRae track that only released in 2025, suggesting it is more recent than first believed.
But for Take-Two, that distinction is cold comfort, because a build in hostile hands means the leaks do not have a bottom.
In 2022, the leak was a finite dump. Painful, then over. This is a faucet, and Cyberleek controls the handle.
The group has been proving exactly that. Fans reportedly voted on which clip would come next, and “plane” was the request delivered. The operation is also monetized, with a memecoin pitch attached to those leak votes.
And the spoiler risk is now real in a way it was not on Tuesday. Gameplay systems in a pre-release build will change by November. Story and cutscenes generally do not.
If Cyberleek has campaign content, the ending of the most anticipated game ever made is sitting on someone else’s hard drive.
Rockstar’s Box Has No Good Exit
Rockstar and Take-Two still have not said a word. The only response remains DMCA takedowns, which keep landing and keep getting mirrored.
Here is the trap. The obvious countermove, releasing the official gameplay reveal early to take the oxygen away, is reportedly off the table, because the Extended Look is contractually parked behind Netflix’s six-hour exclusive window on August 27.
So Rockstar’s biggest marketing beat of the year now doubles as a deadline for its adversary.
Every day between now and next Thursday is a day Cyberleek can keep drip-feeding footage to an audience Rockstar assembled.
The Cyberleek site briefly went dark Thursday, sparking rumors of an arrest, but the leaks resumed Friday and Saturday, with mirror sites springing up faster than takedowns can catch them.
The November Bet Has Not Changed, But Now There Is A Price Tag
Pre-orders vastly beat the company’s own forecasts, analysts estimate nearly 90% of them are the $100 Ultimate Edition, and GTA 6 is still the surest commercial bet in entertainment on November 19.
That is presumably why the stock recovered a chunk of its losses by Thursday’s close and ticked green after hours.
The market is not pricing in a failed launch. It is pricing in uncertainty about how deep the breach goes, what leaks next, and how a company that shrugged “who cares if you download digitally” handles an opponent who made digital distribution the whole fight.
Four years ago, a Rockstar leak had no financial impact. This week, one reportedly cost almost $3 billion at the bottom. The difference is not the footage.
It is that this time, the leaker is still playing.
