X-O Manowar

Review: X-O Manowar #5

The “Summer of Valiant” may be coming to a close, but the comics world continues to heat up each week as another Valiant book hits the shelves! Not only does Valiant strive to push their characters forward into the hearts and minds of fans, they also are bringing some of the best comic characters back to the forefront of the industry. This week it’s — Ninjak!

Robert Venditti’s tale of a man displaced in time continues here, and we get an inside look at just how emotionally scarred Aric is from knowing everything he has ever held dear is gone. Venditti makes the reader connect on a deeper level with Aric, revealing his vulnerabilities and even his arrogance while wielding the X-O armor. A flawed man in a desperate time, Aric is someone we can sympathize with and enthusiastically root for as he unleashes his frustrations upon an unwitting world!

The juxtaposition between the morose barbarian Aric, and the calculated assassin Ninjak — is perfect. Ancient ideas and modern concepts clash in a too short battle. Their differences are vast, while their parallels end at a mounting body count. And believe me, the bloodshed is quite staggering in this issue! All the more reason to covet this series!

A fast paced, intelligent tale — Robert Venditti delivers lightening in a bottle yet again! If you haven’t picked up this series yet, there is still time to delve into the Valiant Universe. The “Summer” may be over but the “Arcs” are just about to begin!

Be bold, be unique — be Valiant!

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile for September 12th, 2012

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

( A weekly quick pick of the five titles that should reside at the top of your pull list. IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER! )

I do the research, you reap the reward! Before you head out to your favorite shop today, be sure to add these five titles to your list of goodies! Forget that “apple a day” nonsense, this “DOC’s” prescription to good health starts with these top five books of the week!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3024:]]1.  Batgirl #0:  Gail Simone has been hinting about Batgirl’s origin since issue one, especially that fateful night when it was all taken away from her. Well, you won’t see how she learned to walk again here, but you will see her heroism in full swing and her first meeting with a certain Knight! Well paced and very rich in characterization, this is a fantastic series!

2.  Avengers Vs. X-Men #11:  This is the single most impressive book of the series. Continuity issues aside — Cap asks the Hulk to join the Avengers? Wait, isn’t he already one in Avengers Assemble? Oh, that one’s only about Marvel movie characters? Okay! — this one gets the heart racing again! Plus, someone gets kill… oh, right –NO SPOILERS! I always forget!

3.  X-O Manowar #5:  One of Valiant’s coolest creations comes back in it’s flagship title! Enter–Ninjak! Finally, Aric has his hands full when Ninjak is paid to retrieve the X-O armor. But, will the world’s deadliest assassin turn it over or keep it for himself?

4.  Batman #0:  A cool tale about Bruce Wayne’s first attempts at bringing justice to Gotham, but it’s the back-up tale by James Tynion IV and Andy Clarke that makes this book worth while! Revolving around the “Bat family” of characters, we get to see their different perspectives regarding heroism in a single night. Really well done!

5.  He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #2:  Purely for nostalgic reasons, this one continues James Robinson’s tale of young Adam and his quest to remember his past. It seems a certain sorcerer has made him forget the man he truly is, but that won’t stop him from trying! Not even — Trapjaw! Let the eighties reign supreme!

Review: X-O Manowar #4

After the bombastic assault Aric bestowed upon the Vine army last issue, there is some much needed “down time” between the pages of this one. Though the introspective look is not focused upon the time displaced Aric, but rather the cause of all his woes — the Vine themselves!

It has been said many times before that a hero is only as good as his villains make him out to be. Venditti continues to prove this statement true, as he expands upon the background of the Vine and how far their influence reaches into the Valiant Universe! Perfect pacing and well thought out characterization, has brought these cruelly simplistic villains to the forefront as truly diabolical beings. Ones that have grand schemes already in place for our hero and, more importantly, the entire human race!

Venditti and Nord continue to create refreshing, poignant stories that captivate readers in ways that haven’t been done since the silver age of comics. There is an excitement that exudes from the page, even during the most mundane of scenes, that enthralls the reader. It instills a sense of awe and wonderment that can make the most hardened of cynics a fan of comics again.

If Venditti can make a bunch of spider faced aliens a fearsome force to be reckoned with, hold onto your hats my friends, because issue five will blow you away! That’s right, it’s the return of one of the most lethal assassins around — Ninjak! Aric’s world is about to get a whole lot more complicated!

Advanced Review: Archer and Armstrong #1

The “Summer of Valiant” marches on — bringing fresh, creative ideas to their amazing 90’s properties. This week sees the debut of the fourth relaunched series, Archer and Armstrong, helmed by Fred Van Lente and Clayon Henry. Although they have big shoes to fill – the original was penned by the legendary Barry Windsor-Smith – they have crafted a fine book rich with action, humor and intrigue!

From ancient civilizations to modern day New York, Van Lente and Henry create a tale rife with excitement! It is a tale of two polar opposite men on a parallel course to save the world. One is naive of the ways of the “outside” world, having been raised by religious zealots in an amusement park, but has a keen sense of purpose and more than enough martial art skills to accompany him on his journey. While the other, a brazen drunkard, has had hundreds of years to acquire knowledge of the vast ways the world turns — just not enough drive to do anything about it! Old, young, seasoned and pure, it is formulaic of all good “buddy” stories — but is so much more!

Sprinkled with just enough social and political commentary as to not become preachy, Archer and Armstrong is an amalgam of everything readers want in a book. Stunning action sequences, well crafted characters that we can empathize with, an enigma that drives the characters to become better than they are and above all else — excitement! You are instantly hooked by Van Lente and Henry’s tale, a feat not easily done these days! Some may say that it pales in comparison to the original, but for me — it is a thrill ride that stands well on its own!

Since it is already headed for a second printing, be sure to be the first in line at your favorite shop to get your copy! You don’t want to miss out on, not only a great tale, but a sneak peak of X-O Manowar #5, too! Can anyone say Ninjak? Awesome!

Be bold, be noble — be Valiant!

Advanced Review: X-O Manowar #2

Valiant is exploding on the scene this week! Not only does the amazing Harbinger #1 hit the shelves at your local comic shop this Wednesday, but the second installment of Robert Venditti and Cary Nord’s — X-O Manowar does as well!

Issue two of Valiant’s flagship series begins directly after Aric and his most trusted ally, Gafti, are captured during an escape attempt. Though they are beaten and thrown into a slave pit by the alien race known as the Vine, Aric cannot help but dwell on the artifact they saw while they looked for an exit. The suit of armor, that seemed almost alive, will steel Aric’s heart and strengthen his resolve to one day escape the horror that has become his life! If he cannot choose how he will live, he most certainly will choose how to die — fighting!

Venditti and Nord have created another classic issue that will stoke the fires in any man’s belly to live free and fight against oppression! This is a rallying tale about rising yourself up from bleak circumstances and choosing to die under foot or become master of your own fate! It is a story that will leave Aric scarred, broken, and beaten physically, but it will also solidify him as a leader of men and a warrior king! One that will wait, planning his precise moment to strike a blow against his captors — claiming freedom as his ultimate prize!

Visually stunning and conceptually brilliant, this testosterone infused tale will send any adrenaline junkie into an euphoric state! The build up and characterization of Aric as a TRUE leader of men — is pure, classic storytelling at its finest. If you are a fan of heroes that will not falter in the face of extreme odds, than you need look no further to find your new favorite book — X-O Manowar is the one for you!

With only three books under their collective belts, Valiant, has become a breath of fresh air in the comic world! If you are looking for amazing books that will give you a truly satisfying read this Wednesday – be bold, be adventurous – be Valiant!

Advanced Review: Harbinger #1

I have to admit, I never read the original Harbinger series! My favorite Valiant book had always been Shadowman, ask me anything about Jack Dominique Boniface — and you will have my undivided attention. Harbinger however, never had enough characterization for me. It didn’t have enough “meat on its bones” to pique my interest.

Well, just like the nineties — those days are over! This new Harbinger series is what great comics are made of!

From page one, you cannot help but be captivated by the richness of the world both Joshua Dysart (B.P.R.D., Unknown Soldier) and Khari Evans (Carbon Grey) have created. It is fantastic in nature, yet so realistic that these characters could be living in your own neighborhood. But it is the juxtaposition of characters, Toyo Harada and Peter Stancheck, that is the most captivating factor! Both harbor amazing gifts, but it is their use of them – or lack there of – that set them apart. While Harada is trying to save the world the best he can, Stancheck is just trying to escape the voices in his head!

Joshua Dysart has created an amazing character that is so hard to like, I actually couldn’t put this book down! The character of Peter Stancheck is a disheartened, pathetic junkie that uses his telepathy to rob pharmacies in order to stop hearing the thoughts of all the people around him. Teamed with his Zyprexa popping best friend, Joe Irons, they travel the East Coast — staying one step ahead of the mysterious Mr. Tull. You want to pass on Peter as not just a hero but as a human being. But there is something about him, a lost innocence, a quest for normalcy, a broken soul — that makes you want to continually read on and engulf all there is to know. It is a thrill ride of discovery, even if you think he’s despicable!

Harbinger is a stunning character piece, infused with mystery, intrigue and top notch art! Comic fans should stand up and take notice — Valiant is churning out some amazing books! First there was X-O Manowar, now Harbinger! They have created a solid foundation for their resurgence — let’s see how high they can build this new vision!

Advanced Review: X-O Manowar #1

As I walked towards my desk through the CBN offices, a wave of nineties nostalgia washed over me. Recently, everything old seems new again! Variant covers are all the rage, there are superhero cartoons gracing my TV screen every Saturday and Sunday, the Age of Apocalypse is still running rampant, Soundgarden has a new single on the radio and Rob Liefeld is actually drawing comics again! But what really pushed me over the edge — the advanced copy of X-O Manowar from Valiant comics laying on my desk! One of the biggest independent comics publishers of all time, is back and ready to carve their names in the history books yet again!

New York Times best-selling author, Robert Venditti, and Eisner award-winning artist, Cary Nord, converge on an amalgam tale of sword play and sci-fi that will make any comic fan’s testosterone levels exceed maximum capacity! It begins as a savage look at life for the nomadic Visigoths and their dealings with the ever growing power of the Roman Empire in 402 A.D.! From there it progresses into a tale of revenge and eventually, delves into the world of sci-fi in epic fashion! I must say, Cary Nord is the perfect choice to portray the brutality of the battlefield and the viscousness of our young hero — Aric! Who else could bring the scope and horror of war to reality than the man who drew Conan? No one!

For fans of the original series, you will feel right at home with Venditti’s rendering of Aric and the situations that befall him in order to finally become one with the X-O armor. For those of you that are coming aboard with a fresh set of eyes, you will be astounded by how Venditti has created a character that is so rich and fleshed out in a single issue. He takes a character that is steeped in arch-types and makes him exceed them all, giving us the perfect new icon to usher in the new era of Valiant!

I don’t want to ruin any of the amazing story that Venditti and Nord will lay before you next week, so I promise you no spoilers. But I also promise you this — with but a single issue under their belts, X-O Manowar will become the next big cosmic title you need to get your hands on! From swords to laser cannons, from slaughter to sentient suits of armor — you will relish every page and yearn for more!

The nineties will never come back! But Valiant has, and they will make the “big boys” quake! As Aric says before leaping into battle, “The time for talk has passed. It is time to fight!” and that’s exactly what they intend to do!

“X-O Manowar” #1 goes on sale Wednesday May 2nd, 2012! And look for the FCBD issue May 5th!

Interview: Valiant Comics X-O Manowar With Robert Venditti

Interview With Robert Venditti on X-O Manowar

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:644:]]This May sees the return of the Valiant Universe in the form of X-O Manowar by writer Robert Venditti and artist Cary Nord. Venditti, no stranger to the world of cosmic and sci-fi, previously worked on the comic book The Surrogates for Top Shelf, which was adapted into a major motion picture starring Bruce Willis, as well as the Percy Jackson Graphic Novels. Nord’s credits include DaredevilSecret Invasion: X-Men, and Conan along side Kurt Busiek at Dark Horse.

The two will combine forces to bring Aric of Dacia to the 21st Century. The fan-favorite character of long time Valiant fans will return with X-O Manowar #1 on sale May 2nd as well as the X-O Manowar Free Comic Book Day issue, available May 5th. Venditti and Nord will be offering fans, both new and returning, a familiar, yet modern and distinct approach to X-0.

X-O Manowar sees Aric The Visigoth abducted from his home by the alien race known as The Vine, an advanced plant-centric race that harvests humans. There, Aric comes into possession of the most powerful weapon in all existence – the X-O Manowar armor. As Aric makes his way back home, he discovers that his time spent off Earth has actually been 1600 years. Now, the once heir to the throne of the Visigoth kingdom must contend with a present day that is anything but familiar.

Cosmic Book News spoke with Robert Venditti on the new X-O Manowarwhere the writer goes into more detail about his plans for Valiant’s debut comic book, as well as touching upon the arrival of new heroes from the Valiant Universe and more.

Cosmic Book News: How will you be bringing X-O Manowar into 2012? It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen everybody’s favorite Visigoth. Will it be at all similar to the previous? Furthermore, seeing how this X-O Manowar is all new, will veteran readers see something of the old, yet also something totally fresh?

Venditti: The goal is to build on the foundation that was laid by the original run.  This is a new series with a new first issue where everyone can jump onboard, but we’re also staying true to the core concept that made X-O Manowar so successful to begin with.  It’s such a strong concept, why change it?  We’re going to be expanding on it, though, taking things in new directions and throwing in some twists along the way.  No matter how familiar someone is with the character’s history, there will be plenty that readers won’t see coming.

Cosmic Book News: How about readers who are not familiar or haven’t read any of the previous stories, how would you describe X-O Manowar to them?

Venditti: It’s a blend of historical fiction and science fiction, and it’s packed with all of the epic action that you’d expect from both.  The story is nevertheless rooted in a very compelling central character, and it will be that character’s personal journey that I hope brings readers back month after month.  That, and his really cool suit of armor.

Cosmic Book News: What can you tell us in regards to the characterization of Aric? I know you have touched upon your version being a bit more sophisticated in past interviews. At times a “warrior” can be portrayed as more brute than brains; however, as Robert E. Howard wrote Conan to be extremely intelligent and cunning, is it a fair statement to say that just because Aric may be from the past, that doesn’t necessarily equate to less intellect? Can you expand upon that?

Venditti: That’s exactly what we’re going for with Aric.  Just because he’s ancient, that doesn’t mean he’s unintelligent.  In many ways, the ancients are the giants on whose shoulders we stand today.  The Visigoths were certainly a sophisticated people, and as the heir to the Visigoth crown, it stands to reason that Aric would be one of their brightest.  At his heart he remains a warrior, though, and there will be times when his impulse to fight will get in the way.  It’ll be a constant struggle.

Cosmic Book News: When Aric makes his way to the present day, how will the world around him react to X-O? Will he be their first experience with a super human? Likewise, Aric will be the proverbial fish out of water, and arguably the biggest shark in the sea, how will Aric’s vast power affect him as he encounters an all-new world (ie present day)?

Venditti: Aric is a Visigoth from the 5th century, a man accustomed to resolving his differences through combat.  That’s all well and good when you’re talking about swords and shields, but what happens when someone with that sort of mentality comes into possession of the most powerful weapon in the universe, a weapon with destructive potential  that far surpasses anything seen even in the modern world?  It’ll be a learning process for Aric—one that won’t always go smoothly—and it’ll affect how he views others, and how they in turn view him.

Cosmic Book News: The original saw X-O battling the Spider-Aliens, will we see those foes? Perhaps, new ones? Any foes you can mention besides The Vine?

Venditti: Great heroes are made by great villains, and there will be no shortage of those in the series.  In addition to The Vine, Aric will encounter a myriad of foes, some new and others more familiar to longtime Valiant fans.  There are so many great characters in the Valiant stable, and I can’t wait to get my hands on some of them.

Cosmic Book News: We see X-O sporting a new sword on the cover of both the X-O FCBD and first issue, does he have any other new powers? And does he still use the control ring?!

Venditti: I don’t want to give away too much just yet, but yes, the Manowar armor will be displaying some new powers.  One of them will be the key to the entire first year of the series, and it’ll explain why The Vine wants the armor back so badly.

Cosmic Book News: Will X-O be used as a launch pad to introduce the other Valiant characters into the Valiant Universe?

Venditti: One of the aspects that made the original incarnation of Valiant so successful was the interconnectedness of their books, and that will certainly be the case with the new line as well.  Plans are already being made to bring other Valiant heroes into the pages of X-O Manowar, but it’s too early to reveal which characters and when.

Cosmic Book News: In regards to the art, what can you say about Cary Nord’s X-O?

Venditti: The pages Cary is turning in are just stunning.  He’s a huge asset to the book.  Every time I see a new page, it makes me want to write more.  I knew I was going to have fun writing this book, but I didn’t realize I was going to have this much fun.

Valiant Comics Launches New Website; New Peak At X-O Manowar

With Valiant Comics announcing the new X-O Manowar, they have updated their website: ValiantEntertainment.com.

The new site will feature news and info on all their comics, with only X-O listed so far.

However, they do give us a new peak, I believe, at Aric of Dacia in a background pic. Could be the cover to #3 as the file is labeled “valiant_x-o_manowar_3.”

Regardless, looks awesome.

X-O Manowar #1 hits in May.

New X-O Manowar Monthly From Valiant Begins In May: Teases ‘War Is Coming’

This May will see the debut of a new X-O Manowar monthly series from Valiant Comics.

Valiant released the following teaser on their Facebook, and we can see “War Is Coming” spread across the top!

“The countdown starts now! Look for this retailer-exclusive poster to begin arriving in comics stores nationwide over the next week. Head to your local comic shop to check it out! And make sure to let your local retailers know that you want to see X-O Manowar on shelves this May!”

May will also see an X-O comic released for Free Comic Book Day.
