A Venom with all the same powers, but a far different origin.
Scrapped are the cosmic and alien origins of Spider-Man’s dark nemesis.
In its stead is a Venom that derives its beginning from the blood of Spider-Man. Spidey’s irradiated blood has been distilled leaving only — Venom.
Doc Ock was the culprit behind the feat, along with Norman Osborn’s involvement, with the new Venom battling Spider-Man and his amazing friends.
Nova, Power Man and Iron Fist all get taken over, with Spider-Man somehow figuring out the black goo is a symbiote — because Spidey knows science.
As this is “Ultimate” Spider-Man, the change in origin should be no surprise to comic book readers as the Ultimate Comics Venom ditched the cosmic origin as well. And as we saw in this episode, Venom’s weakness was electricity, just like the Ultimate version.
They showed two episodes with the first basically an intro/origin, and the second was Spidey joining up with SHIELD, partnering with Nova, Power Man, Iron Fist, and the White Tiger.
I found the first episode to be a bit better, as the second introduced things like the Spider-Man motorcycle and SHIELD web-shooters, which I thought were so-so.
It was cool seeing Agent Coulson appear, as well as an update on the Spider-Man mythos in addition to all the fun and humorous elements at play.
My seven year old thought it was “awesome” as well.
ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN SEASON 1, EP. 1
One year after becoming Spider-ÂMan, teenage Peter Parker is approached by Nick Fury to train with S.H.I.E.L.D. Spidey turns Fury down, but soon finds that villainous forces may require him to join the big leagues after all.
Disney updated their Ultimate Spider-Manwebsite with images of the characters involved.
With that, we get a look at what the new Nova, Sam Alexander, looks like under the helmet, in addition to the following description:
The hyperactive loose cannon of the group. Sam always feels like he has something to prove. Sam’s powers derive from the Nova Force, which is channeled through his helmet. These powers include flight, enhanced durability, and the ability to absorb and release pulses of energy. However, Sam does not know the extent of his powers, let alone how they work.
Check out the new trailer for Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man. We see that Spidey is recruited by Nick Fury to become the “ultimate” version! Also some villains and The Avengers are present as well. Ultimate Spider-Man premiers at part of the Marvel Univese Block on Disney XD April 1st along with the second season of …
It would have been nice if Marvel actually promoted Nova like this before we got this new Nova.
Kind of ticks me off to be honest.
When Marvel’s Civil War exploded on the the scene there was a smaller event going on as well with Annihilation.
This saw Marvel’s cosmic characters come together in an epic universe spanning event.
Annihilation has actually been toted as being better than Civil War, and again, it came with none of the exposure (if you are a Mass Effect 3 fan, which just sold almost 900,000 copies in one day, you will love Annihilation).
After the main Annihilation series ended, a new book was launched — Nova. Richard Rider was the hero that saved the day from the invading leader of the Negative Zone, Annihilus. From there, Marvel Cosmic continued with Annihilation Conquest and the launch of a second book in the line — Guardians of the Galaxy.
For some odd reason, none of these characters would appear in Marvel’s big events, including the COSMIC event, Secret Invasion, or any other that followed. When Fear Itself was described as being the “biggest” event ever (yes, just like AvX), none of the cosmic characters appeared. The headliners of the two cosmic books previously mentioned, Nova and Star-Lord, were extinguished during the fan-favorite hit event The Thanos Imperative, which saw better sales than the heavily hyped and promoted Chaos War, Thor movie tie-ins and Crossgenrelaunch.
Of course, when Thanos Imperative went to Hard Cover, and rose to the top of the charts, this was a big surprise to those who run Marvel.
Well, now we have this new Nova, a Spider-Man in space with an attitude.
And Marvel is promoting the hell out of him.
This Nova is featured in Marvel’s biggest event since Civil War, Avengers Vs. X-Men, as well as being featured in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 (via a new DLC costume), and is a big part of Disney XD’s upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.
Speaking with the LA Times, Hero Complex, similar to JephLoeb, Quesada says, “I think my favorite character is going to be Nova. Nova is a character that will hopefully break out. He’s a lot of fun and sort of the yin to Peter Parker’s yang.”
This April sees the premiere of the new animated Ultimate Spider-Man on Disney XD.
We already knew that Nova was going to play a role as some early footage was leaked.
Now, Marvel has officially released some artwork, along with comments from JephLoeb, Head of Marvel Television.
We learn that this Nova will not be Richard Rider, but a teenager with an attitude, Sam Alexander.
“Nova is an enormously popular character,†Loeb stated to Marvel.com. “When the decision in publishing was for Rich Rider to sacrifice himself [at the climax of THE THANOS IMPERATIVE] we wanted to respect that. We all know that there are other members of the Nova Corp and this is the story of one such member –Sam Alexander.â€
As fans of the comic book will note, there is also a new younger Nova partaking in Marvel’s upcoming mega event, Avengers Vs. X-Men. Is it the same character? Time will tell. Furthermore, Jeph Loeb penned this Nova’s first appearance in Point One.
Loeb goes on to compare this version of Nova to Spider-Man.
“He’s very much like Peter Parker was at the beginning of Spidey’s career–he’s got a lot to prove,†said Loeb. “The difference is that Sam comes with a full blown attitude—which, as we may suspect, might be covering up some insecurities.â€
We also learn that Sam will be getting a big push from Marvel, as Loeb states the character will be a breakout star.
“We’re huge Nova fans as well, so rest assured Nova will be front and center with the heavy-duty action. There’s no task he’s not willing to get into and that bravery–even at personal risk–will put him in harm’s way more often than not. He loves playing the hero, so look for Nova to be the breakout star of the series!â€
The costume featured by Sam Alexander in Ultimate Spider-Man was recently released as an extra (DLC) for Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 as well.
Ultimate Spider-Man premiers on Disney XD April 1st, from a creative team that includes Paul Dini, Brian Michael Bendis and Man of Action (Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steven T. Seagle).
The new Ultimate Spider-Man series is set to swing in to Disney XD beginning Sunday April 1st!
No foolin’ either as the new Spidey toon will be part of Disney’s new “Marvel Universe Block,” which also includes The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, new animated short-form series, live-action interstitials and more.
“Marvel Universe block is an incredible animated ride filled with fantastic action and adventure,” said Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television, to Marvel.com. “The spectacular team of writers and animators capture stories with all the dynamic fun you can imagine. Disney XD is the perfect place for families and Marvel fans of all ages to come together every Sunday.”
Acting as the keystone of the Marvel Universe block, “Ultimate Spider-Man” features a teenage Peter Parker juggling the typical growing pains of high-school with the not-so-typical growing pains of being a super hero. As the newest member of Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, Peter finds himself on a team with four other teenage super heroes.
