Van Jensen & Charles Soule Take Over Green Lantern Books; Tony Daniel new Action Comics writer

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6233:]]The last couple of days saw creative changes abound at DC Comics with the exits of Andy Diggle from Action Comics and Joshua Hale Fialkov from both Green Lantern Corps and Red Lanterns.

While that may leave a sour taste in some people’s mouth, at least it won’t be for long as already DC Comics has announced the new creative teams to replace them.

Van Jensen will be the new writer on Green Lantern Corps with GL writer Robert Venditti co-plotting.

Red Lanterns will be taken over by the new writer on Swamp Thing, Charles Soule.

In addition, it’s also confirmed that Tony Daniel will be taking over writing chores on Action Comics.

Josh Fialkov did offer the following statement via his blog (via CBR):

There were editorial decisions about the direction of the book that conflicted with the story I was hired to tell, and I felt that it was better to let DC tell their story the way they want. I’m grateful for the opportunity and I’ll miss working with the entire Green Lantern team.

This was not an easy decision to make emotionally or financially, but, I’m sure it was the right decision for both me, and for the Green Lantern books. The outpouring of support, your kind words and well wishes means so much to me and my family.

Man of Steel Movie At C2E2? Tony Daniel’s Superman Poster Revealed

DC Comics revealed Tony Daniel’s new Superman original poster for this year’s Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) which takes place from April 26th-28th.

As you may or may not know, DC Comics is also launching a new Man of Steel comic book by superstar artist Jim Lee and best-selling Batman writer, Scott Snyder, which launches in conjunction with the new Man of Steel movie as well as the 75th anniversary of Superman.

In addition, Zack Snyder filmed the Man of Steel in Chicago, and the C2E2 happens to be the biggest convention prior to the movie’s debut on June 14th. It’s quite possible we may see something from the movie there.

Fans will be able to see the poster featured in Chicago area retailers and on transit trains and buses, with Superman being a major part of the convention’s marketing plans.

“Each year I am always encouraged by the tremendous support that DC Entertainment provides at our shows,” said Lance Fensterman, Group Vice President for ReedPOP and Show Manager for C2E2, in a statement. “This year is obviously no exception and this early announcement is a great way to be setting the stage for C2E2. The poster art is a key element of our show and a critical part of our marketing strategy. This year’s image reflects the strength and dynamism of C2E2 and I am incredibly grateful to Tony Daniel for contributing his time and effort on our behalf. He is a brilliant artist and he has created what will be a lasting image for C2E2 in 2013.”

Review: Justice League #13

The 13th issue of the New 52 Justice League had the flavor of a Silver Age Avengers mag, where the characters were acting like – how else can I say this? – themselves and were really functioning as a team. That smile of Wonder Woman toward the end of this Cheetah-centric tale said it all!

But what really took me by surprise was guest artist Tony Daniel, who grabbed me on the splash page with that Supes/ Diana kiss, then choked me silly with that double splash on Pages 2-3 of Wonder Woman and the Cheetah in battle and he never let go.

I want to say I really missed the great Jim Lee on this issue (and I did), but this was no mere feat of guest artistry, no measly fill-in on the talented Daniel’s part. A writer as well as an artist, Daniels and his inkers, Richard Friend and Batt, interpreted this script from writer Geoff Johns brilliantly and brought out not only the “super”-ness of the relationships herein, but also gave a damn good background story for the New 52 Cheetah, why she means so much to Diana, and the true horror of that last page just cannot be believed, even if the foul deed was happening to an iconic character!

The backup, by Johns, CBN fan fave and former cosmic artist Brad Walker, and inker Drew Hennessy take the character who has been the heart and soul of this book – Steve Trevor – and follow him as he goes from low man on the totem to no man, and then see as one Oliver Queen arrives to save the day … and maybe Trevor’s life, who knows? This is one love sick dude!

The backup will take us right into the debut in a few months of the New 52 Justice League of America with Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Trevor and some other favorites.

Since its six-issue origin story has finished, Johns, Lee and now Daniel have been cooking with gas on this title. This is a flagship book that truly lives up to the hype, with spin-off titles like Team 7 and the coming JLA keeping things so interesting.

To those naysayers of the reboot, at least this section of it is working just fine, thank you!

Review: Batman: Detective Comics #1 (Daniel)

The Joker kills without prejudice. No man, woman or child is safe while the deranged murderer prowls the streets of Gotham. That’s why one man takes to the streets, nightly stalking this devil, so that one day — Gotham’s pain can be washed away. Besides the Flashpoint tie-in, which was AMAZING, I haven’t read a …
