Zack Snyder & Henry Cavill Talk Man of Steel Sequel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:21237:]]

While WB chose to go with Batman Vs. Superman as the next movie following Man of Steel, in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, Zack Snyder talks about the potential villains they may have used if they went with a direct Superman sequel.

“I remember we were talking about, ‘What’s the next villain?’” Snyder offered. “We can’t do another alien invasion. Brainiac was definitely down the road. Metallo, I think, was going to be the main bad guy of this movie.”

Snyder even said he had an idea for an end-of-the-movie-scene for Man of Steel that involved Kryptonite and Wayne Manor that he told to both Christopher Nolan and David Goyer.

“I said, ‘What about at the end of the movie we do a scene where there’s a crate full of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor,’” Snyder said. “Everyone was like… ‘Okaay.’ Once you say it out loud it’s a problem because you can’t unsay it.”

Of course, Lex was on the table for the Man of Steel sequel as well, and Jesse Eisenberg is playing the character in Batman Vs. Superman.

“We did talk about Lex right away,” Snyder said. “I think Lex was always on the books.”

Regarding future Superman movies and Man of Steel sequels, Herny Cavill said he is pretty optimistic about the possibility.

“There’s plenty of time for individual Superman sequels,” Cavill said. “He’s a tough character to tell. People like the darker vigilante. I think it speaks to the human psyche more easily rather than the god-like being that we can’t really understand. Once we have a more expansive universe we can delve more into the character of Superman and hopefully tell more stories.”

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has a March 25, 2016 release starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg with Callan Mulvey, Holly Hunter and Tao Okamoto in new character roles for the film. Justice League is to follow directed by Zack Snyder as well.

Synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Zack Snyder & Ben Affleck Defend Superman Killing & Man Of Steel Destruction

With Batman Vs. Superman coming to Comic-Con and the new images released, Zack Snyder’s take on Man of Steel is again being looked at as the end to the film was controversial for a lot of fans which saw Superman kill Zod.

Now as part of EW‘s Comic-Con coverage, both Snyder and Ben Affleck make their case why all the destruction in Metropolis makes sense.

Zack Snyder:

“I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me, that you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences,” says Snyder. The director says he had always intended for the dead to be counted. Indeed, Batman v Superman addresses these concerns head-on—Superman’s victims serve as Batman’s impetus to take him down.

“There are other superhero movies where they joke about how basically no one’s getting hurt,” Snyder says. “That’s not us. What is that message? That’s it’s okay that there’s this massive destruction with zero consequence for anyone? That’s what Watchmen was about in a lot of ways too. There was a scene, that scene where Dan and Laurie get mugged. They beat up the criminals. I was like the first guy, I want to show his arm get broken. I want a compound fracture. I don’t want it to be clean. I want you to go, ‘Oh my God, I guess you’re right. If you just beat up a guy in an alley he’s not going to just be lying on the ground. It’s going to be messy.”

Ben Affleck:

“One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings,” says Ben Affleck, who plays Batman. “And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event.”

Watch: Man Of Steel Superman’s Costume In Brighter Color

One of the complaints regarding Man Of Steel was Zack Snyder’s decision to go with a more “colorless” version of the film and in particular the Superman suit.

Fans have already colorized the Henry Cavill Superman suit, and even Batman Vs. Superman set images have seemingly revealed a brighter-colored suit.

Now the VideoLab YouTube channel has actually re-colored footage from Man of Steel and put together the above video.

Depending how you felt about Man of Steel, the brighter colors may or may not have made much of a difference as the movie was a bit dark in nature and Superman still snaps necks at the end of the movie.

Michael Shannon Wearing An Aquaman T-Shirt At Sundance

If you didn’t know – Michael Shannon happens to be a big fan of Aquaman.

Shannon previously said if he could play a superhero, it would be Aquaman.

“You know who I really want to play?” Shannon said. “Aquaman. If they ever make a fucking Aquaman movie, I want to be Aquaman.”

Shannon said that over a year ago, and now the actor has been spotted at the Sundance Film Festival wearing an Aquaman t-shirt.

Jason Momoa was recently cast as Aquaman and also attended the Sundance Film Festival where Michael Shannon wearing the Aquaman t-shirt was brought up. Momoa didn’t have much to say about it other than “that’s awesome.”

Michael Shannon played Zod for Zack Snyder in Man of Steel. Various fan theories are speculating that Lex Luthor gets a hold of Zod’s body and uses the Kryptonian armor to make the Lex Luthor Warsuit from the comic books.

Watch: Superman Vs. Iron Man Fan-Made Trailer

Iron Man launched the Marvel Studios shared universe leading to The Avengers, and Man of Steel launched WB’s own movie universe leading to Batman Vs. Superman and Justice League.

So what happens when the two heavyweights collide?!

Check out a fan-made trailer for Superman Vs. Iron Man above.

More than likely Iron Man would have some sort of SupermanBuster Armor (maybe the Thorbuster suit?), but the creator of the video does incorporate Tony’s latest heavyweight armor in addition to some cool effects to put Iron Man on par with Superman.

Who wins?

Big Standalone Scene Happening In Batman Vs. Superman

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18560:]]

If you happen to recall the stellar Krypton opening in Man of Steel that lasted 20 minutes or so, you will be seeing something similar in Batman Vs. Superman.

While it’s more than likely not another Krypton scene (Doomsday battle maybe?), Weta Digital’s Senior Visual Effects Supervisor Joe Letteri lets it be known in a video interview they are working on another big standalone scene for Batman Vs. Superman

“We are doing a completely different sequence,” Letteri stated when asked if he was involved in the Batman Vs. Superman Comic-Con trailer. “The sequence that we are doing is sort of self-contained. I don’t think you have seen any of that yet.”

Letteri is then asked if the sequence they are doing for Batman Vs. Superman is on par with the Man of Steel Krypton scene.

“I can’t really give any of it away, but it is a standalone sequence that I think you will be able to pick it out when you see it.

Leaked: Sony Thinks Man Of Steel Is Ridiculous

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:18547:]]

How does the saying go?

People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones?

Well, a new leaked e-mail from the co-head of Sony Pictures, Amy Pascal, has landed online where Pascal calls parts of Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder’s new Superman movie, Man of Steel, ridiculous, humorless, long and jumbled.

A Twitter user got their hands on the following e-mail.

It probably should be noted that under Amy Pascal, Sony released the Amazing Spider-Man movies, with it recently becoming known that Spider-Man may be going back to Marvel.

Neal Adams Slams ‘Man of Steel’ & ‘Superman Returns’

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:16052:]]

Add another comic book creator to the list who didn’t like Man Of Steel with Neal Adams

Adams recently appeared on Kevin Smith’s Smodcast podcast where he offered the following:

On the ending to Man of Steel:

And then at the end, what did he do? He killed a guy. Can’t he put his hand over his eyes? I’m just saying put your hand over his eyes. That would stop it pretty much. One arm is around the throat, put the other hand in front of his eyes. That’s pretty much it. Take him off to the moon or Saudi Arabia or someplace, and finish the battle there. The other thing that they did, too. I don’t know. There’s like a rivet in the back of what-his-name’s head that makes his eyes not move like our eyes can move. Like there are people over there…all I have to do is go like that, and they’re dead. Why are his eyes traveling the movement of his head?

Metropolis:

Why were they fighting in Metropolis? I don’t understand. Even the Kelvinator movies – I’m sorry I was just joking – the robot movies – Transformers movies – they went to Saudi Arabia to fight. They’re knocking down the Sphinx and stuff, but there are not so many people. They’re in the middle of nowhere. They could have gone on the moon, but as soon as Superman hits a building, it’s going to fall down. Didn’t we lose 500 people there? It feels weird.

Superman Returns:

You would think they would be super-sensitive with this movie, and not make those kinds of stupid mistakes. Because the previous movie [Superman Returns] had more kryptonite than you could ever have and still Superman was alive. You had a whole island of Kryptonite, and then you had him go away for – I don’t know – they said I think six or seven years. They said five years, but he comes back and the kid’s twelve years old. He’s got a bastard son. That changes the plot a whole lot. I don’t understand where that came from. You would think after that movie they would be very careful about what they wrote so you would go, ‘Ah, thank goodness, I’m fine with this now.’ But no, it just made everybody more nervous, while Marvel is doing all these great movies.

Captain America 2 Owns Man of Steel At The Box Office

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15450:]]

With the showdown coming in May of 2016 between Captain America 3 and the untitled sequel to Man of Steel, Marvel Studios has won the first battle as Captain America: The Winter Soldier has surpassed the box office sales of the new Superman movie.

Captain America 2 has made over $703 million compared to Man of Steel‘s $668 million last Summer.

To date, Man of Steel is still doing slightly better than Captain America 2 domestically (about a $40 million difference), but Cap 2 manages to overcome internationally with about a $75 million surplus.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15451:]]

Warner Bros. has since added both Batman and Wonder Woman to the Man of Steel “Batman Vs. Superman” sequel as well as more rumored cast featuring the Justice League, with it known a Justice League movie will follow directed by Zack Snyder.

Marvel Studios announced Captain America 3 for a May 6th release, with Warner Bros. following in hot pursuit by announcing Batman Vs. Superman on the same date.

Both sides have said they are not changing the release date for their films, but it’s guessed Marvel will most likely bow out as it’s really a no-brainer that the new Batman (Ben Affleck) as well as Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) on screen with Superman for the first time would be hard to compete against.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 has also recently crossed the $633 million mark with a strong international showing ($461 million).

Joe Quesada Didn’t Get Man of Steel, Either

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15141:]]

Not sure which Man of Steel movie Joe Quesada was watching, but he said the following during his podcast with Kevin Smith.

“As a comic book fan, I wanted to love that movie so much. I wanted to love it so much, and I didn’t love it so much. Again, there are little things here and there that you could pick at and things like that, but I just think at the end of the day, Zod was the hero of the movie to me. He wanted to save his race, and Superman didn’t let him. Zod, in this particular incarnation, struck me as not necessarily an evil man, but a man of…he had a particular…he had his orders, he had a mission. He was a zealot of sorts, but he was a zealot…again, correct me if I’m wrong… but he didn’t say, ‘I want to rebuild Krypton, and then come back and destroy this little planet. All I want is to rebuild this planet. And the only reason I’m blowing everything to bits here is because you’ve got what I want, and you’re not giving it to me. So please, give me my people, and I’ll leave. I was in the mood to watch that Superman movie, and afterwards I was just angry.”

Joe Quesada is the Marvel Entertainment Chief Creative Officer and former EIC of Marvel Comics.

Fans know that Joe Q. isn’t a big fan of Superman-type characters or the cosmic genre in general; so this should come as no surprise.

Russell Crowe Says Batman Vs. Superman Will See Worlds Collide (Video)

David Goyer Says He Would Love To Do Green Lantern

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14659:]]

Is David S. Goyer eyeing a Green Lantern movie as the writer behind Man of Steel and the Nolan Batman movies lets it be known for at least the second time that he would be interested in tackling Green Lantern.

Back in April of last year, Goyer stated with only one word how he would do Green Lantern: “Better.”

And now speaking with The Collider, Goyer says he would love to Green Lantern as in the interview it is mentioned that how they did Krypton in Man of Steel could be a template for Green Lantern.

I would love to do Green Lantern. I really wanted to showcase Krypton as a truly alien world. It was one of the things I wanted to do from the beginning when I got involved in the project. Superman’s always been a science-fiction story, and I wanted to lead into that. So did Chris [Nolan]. So did Zack [Snyder]. I’m just glad we were able to.

Warner Bros. released the Green Lantern movie in 2011 starring Ryan Reynolds. With a reported budget of $200 million, Green Lantern barely managed to make that back with a total worldwide gross of only about $220 million.

Man of Steel, last year, netted about $670 million.

Justice League & More DC Movies To Be Announced Soon

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14652:]]

With the Man of Steel spearheading a DC shared universe, we know that Batman Vs. Superman is currently in development, and now it’s learned that more DC movie announcements are coming soon.

In an article at the NYTimes, it’s mentioned that Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara stated a new DC movie film series will be announced in the near future (probably Comic-Con), and that Justice League is expected to be a part of that.

The current rumor (from yours truly at Cosmic Book News) surrounding Batman Vs. Superman is that it will lead directly into Justice League.

Warner Bros. also has plans for a Sandman movie with David Goyer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached, as well as a Justice League Dark film from Guillermo del Toro.

We can also speculate a Wonder Woman movie is being planned as Gal Gadot signed a three-picture deal, which is known to include Batman Vs. Superman and thought to include Justice League and a standalone Wonder Woman movie.

Other potential movies would obviously be standalone Ben Affleck Batman movies, more Henry Cavill Superman movies and possibly a film for The Flash, which has been rumored for some time. Aquaman has been amongst the rumors as well.

One possibility is that Warner Bros. may be going the opposite approach that Marvel Studios went with. As Marvel Studios didn’t have the X-Men or Spider-Man, they decided to build up their “B-characters” leading to The Avengers movie. As audiences are already familiar with Batman and Superman, Warner Bros. can introduce their “B-characters” in Batman Vs. Superman, have them appear in Justice League, and then spin the “B-character” movies out of Justice League. Look what The Avengers did for Iron Man 3 and Thor 2: each became a blockbuster following The Avengers, much more than their previous movies. Having Aquaman, Wonder Woman or The Flash preceding Justice League might not have as much of an impact compared to following the Justice League movie.

Warner Bros. also has a slew of DC comic TV shows currently with Arrow and with the following in development: The Flash, Constantine, Gotham, iZombie, and Hourman.

Guardians of the Galaxy Owns Superman & Man of Steel

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:13859:]]

Last night saw the debut of the relatively unknown newcomers to Marvel Studios with the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer.

The trailer debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live with a special introduction by the star of the movie, Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord.

It’s learned that Guardians of the Galaxy outperformed even Superman as the buzz on social networks was enough to surpass Man of Steel.

According to the social media research firm Fizziology (via The Wrap), Guardians of the Galaxy netted 88,000 mentions across Twitter, Facebook and various blogs in a 12-hour period between 11 p.m. EST until 11 a.m. EST.

Man of Steel – in the first 24 hours – following its trailer debut attracted 75,000 social mentions.

To date, the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer currently has over 5.5 million views in its first 24 hours.

“The reaction was giddy,” Ben Carlson, president and co-creator of Fizziology, said reports, the Wrap.. “I think a lot of people didn’t know how the film was going to work,  it’s five superheroes and one of them is a raccoon and another is a tree. But they nailed the tone. It was light and fun and full of action and you see that reflected in the social media reaction.

A breakdown of the characters of the Guardians of the Galaxy yielded that Chris Pratt was mentioned about 5 percent in conversations with Rocket Raccoon 3 percent and Groot about 1 percent.

“[Chris Pratt as Star-Lord] was earning a lot of comparisons to a young Harrison Ford as Han Solo, so that’s a good sign,” offered Carlson.

The song used in the trailer, which will be featured in the movie as well, “Hooked on a Feeling,” was mentioned in 2 percent of discussions.

It’s thought Rocket Raccoon may have had kryptonite in his gun (wink, wink).
