Advanced Review: Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi #0

The Force has always been a mysterious element in the Star Wars universe. It drives all living things, the world around them, and can help to shape the destiny of those that can harness it. But where did it all begin? Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is a comic book series that is going to attempt to explain the origins of the Jedi Order and their dark force rivals, the Sith.

Issue zero is mostly background information about the galaxy and worlds that these early days of the Jeรขโ‚ฌโ„ขdaii will inhabit this story. Jeรขโ‚ฌโ„ขDaii means mystic (je) and center (daii), which refers to the mysterious Force that binds everything together. And if thereรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs one thing this issue zero does well, itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs that it binds everything together. In this handy introduction to the series youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขll know who the characters are, what planets theyรขโ‚ฌโ„ขre on, and youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขll get some inside information for plot points down the road.

The artwork by Jan Duuresma feels like authentic Star Wars technology, characters, and settings. Unlike the Clone Wars stories that are so popular nowadays, this art style focuses less on super sleek and modern and goes for the more classic tech look of the original Star Wars stories. Thereรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs also some great allusions to where some of the modern weapons and ships found in the later stories come from, and I for one canรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt wait to see them in action.

The writing by John Ostrander feels almost like a video game or roleplaying guide, which isnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt a bad thing, but it does give you more of a feeling of experience with the oncoming story. All of the background information and locations will make these places feel even more real as characters begin to interact in them. The backstories of the characters donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt feel forced or contrived, and you can tell that the writer was detail oriented in a way thatรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs subtle and not overbearing.

If youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขre a Star Wars comic book fan and are eagerly awaiting this series, then this is an issue worth having in your collection.

George Lucas Is Retiring; Snubbed By Studios, Fed Up With Fanboys

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:434:]]In a lengthy interview with the NY Times, George Lucas announced that he is finished with doing anymore big blockbuster-type movies.

Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขm retiring,รขโ‚ฌย Lucas told the Times. รขโ‚ฌล“Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขm moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff.รขโ‚ฌย

While the Times does state Lucas will still be involved with Indiana Jones 5, Lucas’ current flick, Red Tails, will be the last. Apparently, Lucas feels slighted that when he approached the studios about the film, an all-black movie about the Tuskegee Airmen, they didn’t bother to give it much thought, with an exec not even showing up.

รขโ‚ฌล“Isnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt this their job?รขโ‚ฌย Lucas says, astonished. รขโ‚ฌล“Isnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt their job at least to see movies? Itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs not like some Sundance kid coming in there and saying, รขโ‚ฌหœIรขโ‚ฌโ„ขve got this little movie รขโ‚ฌโ€ would you see it?รขโ‚ฌโ„ข If Steven (Spielberg) or I or Jim Cameron or Bob Zemeckis comes in there, and they say, รขโ‚ฌหœWe donรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt even want to bother to see it. . . .รขโ‚ฌโ„ข รขโ‚ฌย

In addition to feeling snubbed by the movie studios, Lucas seems to be fed up with the fanboys as well. Lucas has a few words for those upset by his edits to Star Wars, with Lucas making a note that it is his movie.

รขโ‚ฌล“On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie,รขโ‚ฌย Lucas says, referring to fans who, like the dreaded studios, have done their own forcible re-edits. รขโ‚ฌล“Iรขโ‚ฌโ„ขm saying: รขโ‚ฌหœFine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.รขโ‚ฌโ„ข รขโ‚ฌย

Lucas continues, mentioning how fans would like even more Star Wars movies, but seeing how they treat him — why should he bother.

รขโ‚ฌล“Why would I make any more,รขโ‚ฌย Lucas said. รขโ‚ฌล“when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?รขโ‚ฌย

Lucas will not be out of the movie making business completely, as he will go back to doing smaller art-housed movies similar to the films he was shooting before Star Wars.

Regarding Red Tails, Lucas bank-rolled the movie himself at the cost of $100 million.

Star Wars TV: Dubbed “Underworld”; Bigger Than Any of the Prequels

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:328:]]

IGN spoke with George Lucas’ right hand man, Producer Rick McCallum, about the Stars Wars television series that never came to be. However, given enough time we just may see it!

You can check out the full video below with McCallum, here are some highlights that I recapped (not verbatim):

โ€ข  The script is timeless as it takes place between Episode III and IV, that 20 year period when Luke is growing up, but it’s not about Luke.

โ€ข It’s about when the Empire is trying to take everything.

โ€ข  It’s basically underneath what’s going on, and the working title is called “Underworld.”

โ€ข  It’s the criminals, the gangs, like the guys running Wall St. and basically the United States.

โ€ข  It’s really a budget thing. It’s really tough because they are trying to have the same special effects in one hour that a two hour movie has, and do it every week. That’s tough — and try to do it for $5 million.

โ€ข  It’s not about making money, it’s about breaking even. Other shows go to HBO and sell the worldwide rights, and HBO will give them say $8 million and tell them to cast this actor and that. That isn’t the way they work and that’s the last thing George wants to do.

โ€ข  There are 50 unbelievable scripts, each one hour episode is bigger than any of the prequels. They are huge, complex, dark, and adult.

โ€ข  Right now it isn’t technologically possible as they only have $5 million an episode, and they have so many digital effects and characters that they are going to hold off and wait to see if there are any major breakthroughs in the next year or so.
