Marvel & George Romero’s Empire Of The Dead Announced As TV Series

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:20683:]]

With The Walking Dead having two series and Z-Nation on SyFy, you knew it wouldn’t be long before zombie godfather George Romero got his own flesh-eating series.

Variety has announced that Romero’s Empire of the Dead graphic novel is being adapted for TV.

Romero published the comic through Marvel Comics; however, it isn’t a part of the regular Marvel Universe, so don’t expect the Marvel Zombies to show up.

Demarest Films is behind the project, with it noted the production company recently backed Kevin Smith’s Tusk, and announced the news today at the Cannes Festival in France.

The Empire of the Dead TV series will be written by Geroge Romero and longtime partner Peter Grunwald, and executive produced by Romero and Grunwald with Demarest’s Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson.

Romero is, of course, known for the Night of the Living Dead zombie movies.

Marvel Comics published the first Empire of the Dead comic back in January of 2014, described as:

Welcome to New York City years after the undead plague has erupted—but just because Manhattan has been quarantined, don’t think that everyone inside is safe! Not only do flesh-eaters roam within Manhattan, but there’s another ancient predator about to take a bite out of the Big Apple!

The ancient predator referred to are blood-suckers, so the series features both vamprires and zombies.

A network has yet to pick up the series.

George A. Romero Writing New Marvel Zombies

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3549:]]

Halloween is right around the corner and fittingly enough we learn about a new zombies tale being penned for Marvel Comics by George A. Romero.

The horror legend behind classics such as Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead let it be known that he is writing a new comic book for Marvel that will feature zombies.

“I am also writing a comic for Marvel. I’m writing it now, but it’s plot is a secret,” Romero told TwitchFilm. “Well I can tell you it won’t involve any of their on-going characters, there will be no superheroes. But it will involve zombies!”

The first Marvel Zombies series was launched back in 2005 with The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman onboard as writer. Throughout the years there have been more than a few Marvel Zombies series, with the latest being Marvel Zombies Halloween by writer Fred Van Lente, who heads over to Dynamite to pen his own zombie comic book.

The Marvel Zombies series saw a virus reach earth turning the Marvel superheroes into zombies, eating other, heroes and villains as well. The virus also made its way into space, effecting the cosmic characters, as well as went multi-dimensional.

It is unknown if Romero’s zombie story will fit into that same universe or be something different entirely.

Marvel Comics Announces “Marvel Zombies Destroy!”

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:699:]]If anything, the Marvel Zombies series of books have been a whole heck of a lot of fun.

I’ve enjoyed them, and the last, Marvel Zombies Supreme, even featured the return of fan-favorite character, the Jack of Hearts!

Now Marvel, via Newsarama, has announced a new five issue mini in May, Marvel Zombies Destroy!, bringing back writer Frank Marraffino with new Zombies artist Mirco Pierfederici (Ruse, Dark Wolverine).

This time, the series will feature a world where the Nazis won WWII – zombie style! And the forces of A.R.M.O.R, consisting of Battlestar, Howard the Duck, Dum Dum Dugan and the rest of the “Ducky’s Dozen,” will come face to face with these zombie-powered Nazis!

Marvel Editor Jake Thomas compares Destroy! to the Robert Kirkman original as well as Fred Van Lente’s run on Zombies.

“To me, the early Kirkman Marvel Zombies stories were these huge, epic apocalypse tales where the most powerful protectors of good had all turned, and what happens when those heroes are infected with an evil, all-consuming hunger,” Thomas told Newsarama. “The Van Lente stories were more about prevention, with a group of plucky heroes fighting to contain, cure or destroy the zombie plagues. What I think we’re doing with Marvel Zombies Destroy! is combing those two approaches.”

Christmas Comes Early This Year With MARVEL ZOMBIES CHRISTMAS CAROL!

Marvel is proud to announce that fan favorite artist, David Baldeon (Young Allies), will be joining red hot writer Jim McCann for the walking dead tale that has fans on the edge of their seats in anticipation – Marvel Zombies Christmas Carol #1 (of 5)! Guaranteed to make you even more afraid of things that go bump in the night, Marvel’s twist on the acclaimed Charles Dickens tale will send chills down your spine! As the Hungry Death consumes the land, Ebeneezer Scrooge must be sent back to Christmases past with his undead friend Jacob Marley to learn the origin of this vicious scourge.

“When we started working on this idea, I was amazed at how well the original text worked in with the concept of the undead. We’ve taken a way to introduce ‘zombies’ in a Victorian manner, keeping with the chilling tale Dickens crafted in the 1800s,” said writer Jim McCann. “I think that David’s amazing designs show you how well it will look. We aren’t going for campiness or shoving zombies into a popular story, but for true Victorian horror…and a small glimmer of hope that lies in one man’s cold heart: Scrooge!”

Artist David Baldeon adds, “This book is not about drawing zombies just because they’re fun. It’s about the characters, the horror, and a fresh yet horrifying look at Victorian terror while following along the lines of Jim’s great script. It’s about giving this book its own atmosphere and feel and making it look like no other version of Christmas Carol ever has.”

Can Scrooge, a man who has never known happiness, make it back from Christmas Past in time to see what the Hungry Death has done to the present and future? Find out this May when Marvel Zombies Christmas Carol #1 (of 5) hits comics shops everywhere. God help us, every one!
