Review: Invincible #120

Tired of Marvel disrespecting cosmic and talking down to cosmic fans?  Tired of the terrible writing and art in the books Marvel is calling “cosmic” these days?  I’ve got a simple answer for you.  Invincible.

This book just keeps re-inventing itself.  And I mean that in a good way.  The characters change, grow, and mature just as they would in real life.  They are faced with situations every day – both fantastic and mundane – but nevertheless the story is written in such a way as to keep the reader riveted if only because the characters are so appealing.

Sadly, a great warrior and fan favorite character is lost in this issue.  I will miss this character.  But it sets things up nicely for Mark to face the biggest and baddest of the the big bads – King Thragg – in future issues.  Especially since King Thragg is building an army of Viltrumite hybrids.  I think the Invinciverse is going to be in for a rough ride in the near future.

Ottley’s distinctive artistic style is the perfect complement to Kirkman’s outstanding writing.  This book would simply not read the same if not for this team-up of creators, and I hope this team stays together for the next 100 issues of this fine book.

If you’re a cosmic fan, rush out and buy this book.  Reward great quality with high sales.

Review: Invincible #118

Now here’s a true cosmic comic book.

This issue marks a major change in direction for the Invincible storyline with Mark and Even immigrating to Telescria to begin a new life with their new baby.  This story chronicles their first day on the planet and their catching up with old friends and relatives.  Oliver, now grown, makes a surprise visit and it’s always good to see Alan.

Their new life is not without peril and heartache, though, as you’ll see with Mark’s PTSD symptoms in dealing with his recent rape and with the totally unexpected final page cliffhanger.

Kirkman and Ottley are a writer-artist dream team.  Mark’s story remains as compelling today after 118 issues as it was in Issue #1.  It just goes to show you that Kirkman can break the mold and allow a character to grow, change, and mature over time – and still keep readers interested.  Kirkman can also tell a true cosmic story aimed at adults where the space setting is central.  There is humor, but he doesn’t make his cosmic stories into a farce.  The humor flows naturally.  Marvel could learn a lot by emulating him.

Ottley’s art remains as amazing as ever.  I look forward to his work and can’t wait to see what he renders every issue.

This issue is priced at only .25 cents as it’s aimed at bringing new readers aboard for this new phase of Mark’s life.  So check it out.  Good cosmic comics need to be rewarded and trust me, you’ll be hooked by this one.

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile for February 29th, 2012

The “DOC’s” Top Of The Pile

By: Chris “DOC” Bushley

(A weekly quick pick of the five titles that should reside at the top of your pull list. In no particular order!)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:773:]]

I do the research, you reap the reward! Before you head out to your favorite shop today, be sure to add these five books to your list of goodies. Forget that apple a day nonsense, this “DOC’s” prescription to good health begins with these top five books of the week!

1.  Moon Knight #10:  Echo is dead, Moon Knight is in a hospital under police custody and Madame Masque has set her sights on retrieving the stolen Ultron armor! This book may be going out, but Bendis is definitely having it go out with a — BANG!

2.  Invincible #89:  Invincible goes Ultimate Spidey style with this one and the status quo will never be the same again! Kirkman brings the cosmic back to the forefront — at least one company does! Check out the full review.

3.  The Walking Dead #94:  Kirkman does it again and sets us all up for a world of hurt! Is Jesus truly a peace bringer or a “piece” bringer? Only time will tell but it all starts here! Check ou my full review for more speculation! Full review!

4.  Tiny Titans #49:  The penultimate book of the Eisner award winning series by Art Baltazar and Franco! The all “Squishy” issue is the perfect read for parents and children that incorporates current storylines into their banter. Like how Beast Boy and Robin discuss how Superman no longer wears “red undies” on his costume! Aw Yeah Titans!

5.  Justice League #6:  This is the best of the best and the type of story that reminds us how good comics can be! Plus, a back up story featuring Pandora and The Phantom Stranger! Does Pandora look a little familiar to anyone else or is it just me? Maybe I’m just over Zealous! Check out my review here!

Review: Invincible #86

Marvel Cosmic has been eating DC’s spacedust for months.  Now add Image to the list of publishers leaving Marvel behind in the spacedust.

Invincible #86 will be a delight to any cosmic fan.  The showdown between Nolan and Allen comes to a head with the fate of all life on Earth in the balance.  Oliver plays a pivotal role in this issue – and while his decisions may surprise some new readers –  long term fans of the series will appreciate that Oliver is acting perfectly in character.

Kirkman is back on point with this issue, a welcome trend that I hope continues as the focus for next issue looks to be Earth since The Coalition of Planets is coming to pay a visit. Walker’s art will delight the most hard core of fans and Plascencia’s colors are eye popping as usual.

Cosmic fans will want to read this issue.  It doesn’t require familiarity with the back story to be enjoyed – and it might just make an Invinci-fan out of you if you aren’t one already.  Don’t take my word for it though.  Pick up an issue and see for yourself why Invincible is in the top tier of cosmic comics and is likely to stay there.

Review: Invincible #85

Since the end of The Viltrumite War arc, Mark has been biding his time on Earth doing quite a bit of soul searching.  The pace of the storyline had slowed a bit – and some fans were beginning to wonder where Kirkman was heading.  With #85 hitting the stands, now we know right where

NYCC 2011: In Kirkman We Trust!

Robert Kirkman not only showed CBN’s EIC Matt McGloin and the “DOC” some fun zombie lovin’ but he was a real man of the people. Arriving late due to some car trouble, Kirkman not only told the fans that the seven o’clock cut off would no longer be in effect for tonight, but he also signed everything fans brought. And I mean everything! Fans had stacks and stacks of books that Kirkman joyously signed with his patented silly grin. And he stayed after the lights began to dim on the convention in order to make every fans dream come true.

Review: Invincible #81

Everybody does a little soul searching in this issue except for Mark – who does a lot of soul searching this issue.  In fact, he almost does too much soul searching as it looks like the dark places he's going in his soul searching are going to lead him down the wrong path. It's rumored

Review: Invincible #80

Invincible has reached the 80 issue mark and it’s still going strong as it closes in on #100.  Kirkman has promised some major changes and surprises in the new arcs leading up to #100, and I have a feeling that some of the seeds are being planted in the current issue. This issue marks the
