KEVIN SMITH APPEARS IN AN ALL-NEW EPISODE OF FACE OFF, FOLLOWED BY THE PREMIERE OF NEW REALITY COMPETITION SERIES, HOT SET, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 ON SYFY

New York, NY – September 13, 2012 – Writer, director and superhero aficionado Kevin Smith guest judges on an all-new episode of Face OffTuesday, September 18 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy. In the episode, the contestants are teamed up in pairs and tasked with creating an original superhero and sidekick duo. Season two winner Rayce Bird is also on hand to assist the contestants with their designs.

Immediately following Face Off, a visually stunning new competition series, Hot Set, debuts at 10 p.m. ET/PT.   Each week, the series will feature two Hollywood production designers competing in an extreme design challenge to create original movie sets inspired by the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres.  Radio and television personality Ben Mankiewicz hosts, and judging the competition are some of the most renowned names in the SFX world — — three-time Art Director’s Guild Award nominee Curt Beech (The CoupThe Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez); two-time Oscar nominee Lilly Kilvert (The Last SamuraiLegends of the Fall); and Art Director’s Guild Award nominee Barry Robison (X- Men OriginsThe Chronicles of Narnia).

In the premiere, production designers Abra and Craig have just three days and a budget of $15,000 to conceive and build a film quality world — a devastated alien landscape to be explored by a crash-landed astronaut. The designers draw support from their skilled team of carpenters and scenic painters, the expansive Hot Set supply room, and many of the special effects houses located in Hollywood. When time is up, the production designers have 30 minutes to shoot a scene on their original set.

Face Off and Hot Set are productions of Mission Control Media, with Dwight D. Smith and Michael Agbabian serving as executive producers. Derek Atherton also serves as executive producer on Face Off.  Aliyah Silverstein is an executive producer on Hot Set.

NEW YORK – August 29, 2012 – Syfy’s 2012 fall programming will feature the first ever live Face Off episode (anchoring the annual month-long 31 Days of Halloween scare-a-thon); the premieres of unscripted shows Hot Set and Viral Video Showdown; a special extended episode of Paranormal Witness; returns of the hit series Ghost HuntersTotal BlackoutScare Tactics and Haven; and the premiere of the Syfy Original Saturday Movie Lake Placid: The Final Chapter starring horror icon Robert Englund.

Syfy will kick off the fall season with its traditional Labor Day weekend movie marathon.

Highlights of Syfy’s 2012 Fall Programming Schedule (All Times ET/PT)

SEPTEMBER

GHOST HUNTERS (SERIES RETURN)

Returns Wednesday, September 5 at 9PM â€“ A new era begins when Ghost HuntersSyfy’s longest-running unscripted series, returns with 14 all-new episodes. Having said goodbye to investigator Grant Wilson in May, The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) – led by Jason Hawes – is officially a team in transition, which means there are plenty of surprises on the way this fall! Ghost Hunters kicks off the return of Season 8 with a block of “Southern Spirits”-themed episodes. First up, the TAPS team heads to Charleston, South Carolina, the winning location of Ghost Hunters’ America’s Hometown Ghost Hunt contest, in search of paranormal evidence of America’s first female serial killer, Lavinia Fisher. Other Southern locales getting the TAPS treatment are Louisiana’s Alexandria Zoo and the French Quarter in New Orleans. TAPS also continues its mission of helping families in need with episodes investigating individual claims of paranormal activity in private homes.

HOT SET (NEW ORIGINAL SERIES)

Premieres Tuesday, September 18 at 10PM â€“ From the producers of Face Off, Hot Set is an extreme set design competition for Hollywood production designers hosted by Ben Mankiewicz. Each week, two designers and their teams will be challenged to build incredible blockbuster sets inspired by sci-fi, fantasy, horror, adventure, and more. The contestants will reveal their completed sets and edited film scenes to a panel of judges who are leaders in feature film production design.

HAVEN (SEASON 3 PREMIERE)

Premieres Friday, September 21 at 10PM â€“ Season three picks up immediately following the events of the gripping season two finale with Audrey (Emily Rose) having been kidnapped; Nathan (Lucas Bryant) warned against pursuing a romantic relationship with Audrey; and Duke (Eric Balfour) seemingly engaged in a fight to the death with Nathan after he discovers his family lineage is to kill “troubled” citizens of Haven.Haven is based on the novella The Colorado Kid from renowned author Stephen King. In the new season, WWE Superstar Edge® returns as Dwight, Bree Williamson (Gossip Girl, One Life to Live) joins the cast as psychiatrist Dr. Claire Callahan, a close friend and confidant to Audrey, while guest stars include Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) along with Nolan North and Claudia Black, who co-starred with Emily Rose in the critically-acclaimed Uncharted video game franchise.

LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER (NEW ORIGINAL MOVIE)

Premieres Saturday, September 29 at 9PM â€“ Following Betty White, Cloris Leachman, and Colin Ferguson – who were all part of the Bickerman clan in previous Lake Placid movies – horror icon Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger/Nightmare on Elm Street) plays Jim Bickerman, a poacher looking to score a big break on hides and eggs from these rare crocs.

OCTOBER

31 DAYS OF HALLOWEEN (SPECIAL PROGRAMMING STUNT)

Premieres Monday, October 1 running through Wednesday, October 31 â€“ Kicking off with the horror movie-themed “Countdown to 31 Days of Halloween” September 23-30, Syfy’s annual month-long spook-a-thon showcases ghoulish programming from original series, original movies and theatrical films, concluding with a live Halloween episode of Face Off.

PARANORMAL WITNESS (SPECIAL EXTENDED EPISODE)

Premieres Wednesday, October 3 at 10PM â€“ For the first time, all the key people involved in the most famous alien abduction case in history reveal what they saw and experienced during a special 90-minute episode of Paranormal Witness. In “The Abduction,” unparalleled eyewitness accounts, alongside original film and audio recordings, tell the story of the legendary 1975 abduction (and reappearance) of Arizona logger Travis Walton, whose five day UFO experience inspired the cult film, Fire in the Sky. Thirty-seven years later, Walton and the six loggers who lived through the events and ensuing investigation still stand by every word of their story. Other witnesses backing up their claims include the investigating sheriff, their polygraph analyst and the doctor who initially examined Walton after his reappearance.

AMERICAN HORROR HOUSE (NEW ORIGINAL MOVIE)

Premieres Saturday, October 13 at 9PM â€“ On Halloween night, a sorority house is overrun with ghosts, while a vengeful housemother goes on a killing spree. American Horror stars Morgan Fairchild and Alessandra Torresani (Caprica).

RISE OF THE ZOMBIES (NEW ORIGINAL MOVIE)

Premieres Saturday, October 27 at 9PM â€“ Survivors of a zombie plague escape their island refuge (Alcatraz) when it’s overrun and risk the outside world to find a scientist who is rumored to have found a cure for the disease. Rise of the Zombies stars Mariel Hemingway, LeVar Burton, Danny Trejo and French Stewart.

SCARE TACTICS (SEASON 5 MARATHON)

Premieres Monday, October 29 from 7:00-10:30PM â€“ Host Tracy Morgan returns for this special marathon of all-new episodes of Scare Tactics, the hidden camera show with a sci-fi twist that pulls outrageous pranks on unsuspecting friends and family. In the season premiere, singer/actress Brooke Hogan makes her Scare Tactics debut as a ravenous zombie.

Elsewhere, sexy witches convince a handyman to help them in an off-kilter ritual and a repo man tries to avoid being turned into a human doll by a deranged shut-in.

TOTAL BLACKOUT (SPECIAL PREVIEW EPISODE)

Premieres Tuesday, October 29 at 10:30PM â€“ Following the Scare Tactics marathon, tune in for a special preview episode of the hit Syfyextreme game show hosted by Jaleel White (Family Matters).

VIRAL VIDEO SHOWDOWN (NEW ORIGINAL SERIES)

Premieres Tuesday, October 30 at 10PM â€“ From 495 Productions, the producers of Jersey Shore, and hosted by Kevin Pereira (Attack of the ShowViral Video Showdown features the greatest viral video creators on the planet going head-to-head in an epic battle for bragging rights and a cash prize. Each week two teams will have to dig deep into their bag of viral tricks to create a video that best captures that week’s theme and impresses the expert panel of viral video judges.

FACE OFF LIVE FINALE (SPECIAL LIVE SEASON 3 FINALE)

Premieres Wednesday, October 31 at 10PM â€“ Face Off unveils a crowning event for its third season with plans for its first live broadcast from Los Angeles on Halloween night. For the first time, America’s voice will be heard as viewers will make the final choice for the Season 3 champion via a live voting feature that will be available immediately following the October 30 episode. McKenzie Westmore will host the special event and reunite the contestants, including the three finalists who will find out live if they garnered enough viewer votes to win the season.

NOVEMBER

TOTAL BLACKOUT (SEASON 2 PREMIERE)

Premieres Tuesday, November 13 at 9PM â€“ Hosted by Jaleel White (Family Matters), Syfy’s highest-rated new program of 2012 returns with new episodes. Total Blackout is a half-hour, extreme game show in which contestants battle each other and their fears in a series of challenges played in complete darkness. From SyFy’s Face Off Comes “Hot Set”: New Movie Set Design Competition

With the success that SyFy has been having with their make-up reality special effects show, Face Off, it looks like they are testing the waters with another design competition series.

SyFy just announced Hot Set, a new six episode series featuring movie set design competition from the producers of Face Off.

The series, hosted by Ben Mankiewicz, premiers Tuesday, September 18th at 10pm ET following Face Off, and features “rival set designers attempting to make movie magic.”

The first episode sees a set based on a devastated alien world where an astronaut has crash landed and must investigate.

The two teams will each have 3 days and $15,000 to pull it off before having to film a 30 minute short to put forth in front of judges Curt Beech, Lilly Kilvert, and Barry Robison.

Up for grabs is the prize of $10,000.

A Select Group of Hollywood’s Most Talented Production Designers Joins Host Ben Mankiewicz for a Visually Stunning Six-Episode Season of Movie Set Design Competition

NEW YORK  â€“ August 27, 2012 – From the producers of Syfy’s top-rated Face Off comes a visually stunning new competition series Hot Set, premiering Tuesday, September 18 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, immediately following an all-new episode of Face Off. Each week, two Hollywood production designers and their teams will compete in an extreme design challenge to create original movie sets inspired by the science fiction, fantasy and horror genres. Each episode is one complete competition, with new production designers introduced each week. The episode’s winning designer will be the one who creates the ultimate movie set that is able to transport the viewer into an immersive world based on creativity, technique and overall presentation. 

A member of an American movie family dynasty, radio and television personality Ben Mankiewicz hosts the series. Ben’s grandfather, Herman Mankiewicz, is an Oscar-winning screenwriter for Citizen Kane and his great uncle, Joseph Mankiewicz, is an Oscar-Winning writer and director for All About Eve and A Letter to Three Wives.

The contestants will reveal their completed sets and edited film scenes on the Hot Set sound stage to a panel of judges who are leaders in feature film production design — three-time Art Director’s Guild Award nominee Curt Beech (The Coup, The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez); two-time Oscar nominee Lilly Kilvert (The Last SamuraiLegends of the Fall); and Art Director’s Guild Award nomineeBarry Robison (X- Men Origins, Wedding Crashers, The Chronicles of Narnia).

The production designers will each have two team members to help them execute the daunting challenges. When time is up, the production designers have 30 minutes to shoot a scene on their original set. In the second episode airing September 25, designers Carl Dove and Kim Tolman must build a film-ready throne room for a gorgeous but brutal alien queen. In the end, one production designer is determined to have that week’s Hot Set and leaves with a $10,000 prize.
