Mark Miller Relaunches Kick-Ass & Hit-Girl Comic Books

Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. are reteaming for a new Kick-Ass comic book that comes out this January.

The comic book will feature a new black female version of the character and will be set in a different city with a new supporting cast.

Millar is also relaunching Hit-Girl, which comes out in January as well with art by Rafael Albuquerque. Daniel Way is scheduled to take over writing chores following the first story arc.

“Comics is not short of white males aged around 30; that demographic seems pretty well catered for in popular culture,” Millar told THR. “I don’t think many blonde white guys around 30 feel under-represented when they pick up comic or watch a movie. Being older or younger or female or African-American just seems more interesting to me as a writer because this character is quite unique and opens up story possibilities that hasn’t been tried in almost eighty years of superhero fiction. This woman has a completely different take on Kick-Ass.”

“Kick-Ass is like James Bond or Doctor Who where with a new face and a new situation and it suddenly feels very exciting,” Millar added. “Every four volumes or so I want a different person in the mask. Sometimes it might even only last a single volume or even a single issue.”

Both the new Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl will be released monthly.

Matthew Vaughn Working On Kick-Ass Prequel (Video)

In a Q&A interview with Yahoo, Matthew Vaughn lets it be known he is working on a prequel movie for Kick-Ass along with creator Mark Millar.

Here is the blurb:

“I’m not happily done with the franchise. Kick-Ass is a really important film to me. I’m really proud of it, and we would like to dip our toe back into it. We are working on an idea for a prequel of how did Hit Girl and Big Daddy become Hit Girl and Big Daddy. It’s quite a fun idea we’ve come up with. If we make that, hopefully that will be the sorbet for the people that didn’t like Kick-Ass 2 and then we can go off and make Kick-Ass 3. I think we’ve got to do this prequel to regain the love that we had with Kick-Ass.

Vaughn also lets it be known he was interested in doing a comedic space movie at one time, but Guardians of the Galaxy beat him to it.

“Never say never… The answer is maybe sci-fi…”

You can check out more from Vaughn in the video above.

Matthew Vaughn is currently working on the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Chloe Moretz Says She’s Done With Hit-Girl: Blames Piracy For Kick-Ass 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:16909:]]

It doesn’t sound likely there will be a Kick-Ass 3, at least starring Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl, as the actress says she is done with the role.

Moretz also blames piracy for Kick-Ass 2‘s lackluster performance at the box office, which saw the sequel only bring in a total worldwide gross of about $60.7 million. The first movie made close to a $100 million.

Via Digial Spy:

Sadly, I think I’m done with the character. Hit-Girl was a very cool character, but I don’t think there will be any more movies. You make these movies for the fanboys, but nowadays everyone seems to pirate them rather than watch them in the movie theatre.

Kick-Ass 2 was one of the number one pirated movies of the year, but that doesn’t help us because we need box office figures. We need to prove to the distributors that we can make money from a third and a fourth movie – but because it didn’t do so well, we can’t make another one.

If you want more than one movie, everyone has to go and see movies at the cinema. It’s all about the numbers in the theatre.

It’s Moretz’s hope that Hollywoods sheds the sexual imagery of female roles and dons a more serious approach.

Whenever there’s a female superhero, it’s always a more sexual plotline rather than seeing an actual character on screen. I don’t think that’s cool. I think it’s rather sad.

I would love to change that. Hopefully, there will be some cool female superhero movies in the future. I hear there’s a Wonder Woman movie coming up. Hopefully they won’t sexualise Wonder Woman, too.

( A weekly quick pick of the five titles that should reside at the top of your pull list. IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER! )

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5502:]]

1. Green Arrow #17 (DC):  Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino are the new creative team and they have completely leveled the the playing field in the world of Green Arrow! Everything begins new here — this is how it should have been from the beginning! Emotionally dismayed and financially broke, Oliver Queen has to finally deal with life like everyone else. But, not only that, he has to deal with explosions, murders and a brand new character that won’t rest until Ollie is dead. It’s one bad day for Green Arrow but an amazing one for readers! Check out my full review here!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5503:]]

2. Snapshot #1 (Image):  The creative team that brought you Losers, Andy Diggle and Jock, are back again with a completely unnerving tale about leaving things that don’t belong to you alone. What do you do if you find a cell phone laying around, and what do you do when that cell phone contains pictures of a murder victim? If you are Jake Dobson, you run like hell! Amazing book that will completely unnerve you!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5504:]]

3. Harbinger #0 (Valiant): An origin of one of Valiant’s greatest villains, Toyo Harada, shows just how the depravity of the human condition will exponentially change a person. It is a glimpse into humanity at it’s worst in the days following the bombing of Hiroshima and how a newly “gifted” little boy can survive it’s horrors by — becoming one of them himself. It has terrific characterization and the perfect jumping on point before the Harbinger Wars crossover!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5505:]]

4. Hit-Girl #5 (Icon/Marvel): This is the bloodiest, goriest, most over the top book of the week! When the badguys come knocking at Mindy’s door and threaten her family, there is only one thing to do — kick some @$$! From silencers, knives, chainsaws, a wood chipper and the most brutal rolling pin scene ever recorded; Hit-Girl is a whirlwind of brutality that is not for the feint of heart — but we love it oh so much anyway!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5506:]]

5. Daredevil: End of Days #5 (of 8) (Marvel): Brian Michael Bendis and his longtime Daredevil collaborator David Mack, have converged once again to tell one of the most compelling DD stories to date. Mark Millar: “Is the Big Two about to become the Big Three?”

supercrooks“Is the Big Two about to become the Big Three?”

That’s the question Mark Millar poses during his Millarworld Editorial in the pages of Kick-Ass 2 #6. And with the lineup he’s bringing to Millarworld in 2012 — he damn well has a shot!

According to Mr. Millar, 2012 will see some HUGE books coming out, but we’ll have to wait a little bit to get them in our hands. Patience is a virtue after all, and it will be well worth it!

March is when we will see not only one new series come out of the Millarworld stable — but two! First will be Supercrooks, with art by fan favorite Leinil Francis Yu. Shipping almost simultaneously will be The Secret Service, drawn by comic legend — Dave Gibbons! This book was also co-conceived by the Kick-Ass film director, Matthew Vaughn! Then in April, we will finally see the long awaited Hit-Girl series, by Kick-Ass veteran artist John Romita Jr!

Around the end of summer, Millar will launch an as yet to be named book that he is calling, “a vast superhero epic, something as wide in scope as the Lord of the Rings, for a superhero audience!” Nothing can make that sound more exciting, unless you factor in that superstar artist Frank Quitely will be doing the art chores!

hit-girl 2And finally in November, fans will get to see one of the most insane, brutal and disturbingly cunning books back on the shelves, as Steve McNiven draws the coolest killers around in the pages of — Nemesis 2!

All these artistic legends led by the crazy intelligence of one Mark Millar? Is there any doubt that the Big Two might actually have to look over their shoulder in 2012? And remember boys, the toys in the Millarworld aren’t as precious as yours! Anything goes, and it usually does, which is exactly what fans want! And I will be the first in line to get the most exciting and original books on the shelves today — Millarworld books!

If that wasn’t enough for you, you can travel across the pond and go to Millar’s own Kapow Comic Convention! Tickets are on sale now for this London based event that takes place on May 19th and 20th. Be sure to visit www.kapowcomicconvention.com for all the insane details!
