Marvel Studios Looking To Release 4 New Series Through Cable & Video-On-Demand

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:11744:]]

It’s being reported that four new potential series and a mini-series are in early stages of development at Marvel as the studio is aiming for a release through cable or video-on-demand.

Deadline has details that 60 episodes are being ordered for something, but no further information is known.

All that is really known is that Marvel is looking to release the four new series and min-series through either cable channels and/or WGN America, Netflix, Amazon and WGN America. No actors are attached.

We can speculate that the cable or VOD release means the potential new series would mean a more serious and graphic approach than say something like Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC.

It’s possible Marvel could be going for something like The Walking Dead, which saw record ratings last night to the tune of 16.1 million viewers. AMC’s The Walking Dead is based on the comic book and includes graphic violence and a serious approach to the story.

While S.H.I.E.L.D. seems to be doing okay through DVR’s and such, the live audience has dropped upwards of around 40% in only three episodes.

Cable television seems where most of the new TV series “are at,” as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, American Horror Story are all popular shows. In addition, Netflix has seen a great response to their own VOD series with House of Cards.

It will be interesting to see which characters Marvel chooses to use to go this route. Black Panther? Heroes For Hire, which Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb previously mentioned was being looked at? Or how about The Punisher? Perhaps a female centric series such as the Agent Carter series said to be in development?

Natalie Portman Hints At Ms. Marvel & Black Panther Movies?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:11139:]]

Natalie Portman all but confirms Marvel Studios is developing movies for a central female figure as well as one for a non-white role.

Portman, playing Jane Foster in November’s Thor 2, tells SciFiNow that she heard it’s already in the works.

“There are definitely many strong women, but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming – I have heard is coming – and, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters.

“But they do definitely have strong female characters in them and I think it’s a testament to the people who run Marvel, their respect, their just normal human respect for women, the way they want to characterise them; you can tell when men talk to you, as just a person or as a ‘woman’”

There has been recent speculation and talks that the female character could be Ms. Marvel, of which Katee Sackhoff has been rumored to be attached to; however, it did just become known that Marvel Studios is in early stages of developing an Agent Carter TV series.

Regarding the non-white character, it’s speculated that could be the Black Panther, as Stan Lee recently stated Marvel Studios will be doing a film based on the superhero from Wakanda. Another possibility is for Luke Cage, an Avenger in the comic books and member of Heroes For Hire. Back in January, Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb mentioned, “Just like they announced Guardians of the Galaxy, we are certainly looking at Heroes For Hire, which is Luke Cage and Iron Fist.”

Black Panther Or Heroes For Hire/Luke Cage Could Be Announced At Comic-Con Saturday

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9553:]]

There already is a large presence at Comic-Con by Marvel Studios with their displays for Captain America 2 and Thor 2.

Both movies are part of the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H at Comic-Con Saturday.

It’s also recently been confirmed that a Guardians of the Galaxy movie preview will be featured.

Now it’s possible that Kevin Feige may also announce a slate of new movies.

Disney recently announced untitled release dates for a batch of new Marvel Studios movies.

It’s thought the Doctor Strange movie might be one of them, but what else?

Well, a clue was made known today at the Marvel Comics My Cop O’ Joe Panel at Comic-Con.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9554:]]

CinemaBlend points out that a fan in attendance asked Joe Quesada if there would be any Marvel minorities hitting the big screen.

Quesada replied simply with, “It will happen.”

The top two Marvel Comics minority characters that have been making the rounds online as of late are Black Panther as well as Luke Cage.

Many actors have recently stated they want to play the characters, including Dwayne Johnson, which could mean Marvel Studios is actively seeking actors for the parts.

It’s also previously been said that a Heroes For Hire movie with Luke Cage and Iron Fist is being looked at.

Perhaps we’ll get both. Tune in tomorrow to find out.

Dwayne Johnson Says He’ll Be Ready For Luke Cage

Luke Cage seems to be a hot commodity amongst Hollywood actors right now as many have been forthcoming about wanting to play Power Man.

The latest has Dwayne Johnson publicly vying for the role.

Previously, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige was asked in a QnA if they were at all interested in The Rock, with Feige responding his name has come up and that they would love him to be a part of the Marvel universe.

Now, Dwayne Johnson responds on his Twitter stating he will be ready for Luke Cage.

Back in January it was learned that a Heroes For Hire movie was being looked at, of which includes Luke Cage and the martial artist, Iron Fist.

Dwayne Johnson was also up for Lobo in the DC Comics movie, which eventually went away, but recently did tease that a superhero role is in his future.

Dwayne Johnson Teases Superhero Movie Role; Talks Star Wars, Lobo & Black Adam

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6304:]]

Dwayne Johnson reveals that he will be playing a superhero in a movie as well as mentions two previous comic book movie roles with Lobo and Black Adam, and once again mentions Star Wars.

While promoting G.I. Joe Retaliation, in which he plays Roadblock, Dwayne Johnson answered questions about the Shazam and Lobo movies.

While those are no longer in active development, Dwayne Johnson did tell SuperHeroHype he will be playing a superhero.

“There’ll be a superhero I do,” he said with a grin, reports SHH.

As Dwayne Johnson was previously attached to two superhero Warner Bros. properties, it might be a safe bet that he will be playing another DC Comics character. We can speculate possibly the Martian Manhunter in the Justice League movie — or even perhaps a villain role?

Speaking of the two defunct DC Comics characters that he was attached to, Dwayne Johnson gives an interesting response in that the studio is no longer doing Lobo and Shazam, but are concentrating on other properties.

[Lobo] kind of came and went,” he explained. “It came. I thought it was interesting. Then it kind of went away… ‘Shazam‘ was more interesting. And really interesting to me. I would have loved that, especially the idea of playing Black Adam. Again, though, studios start to look at other properties and other superhero properties, what makes sense and what doesn’t.”

The fate of Lobo seemed sealed when producer Joel Silver walked away from Warner Bros.; in addition, it’s previously been stated that Warners wants to concentrate on building up their more popular line of characters with new Superman movies (Man of Steel in theaters June 14th), a Batman reboot, as well as the Justice League movie.

However, there is always the possibility that Dwayne Johnson has jumped ship with Marvel Studios. Johnson could possibly play Luke Cage in a Heroes For Hire movie, which has been mentioned by Marvel as a franchise that’s being looked at also with Iron Fist.

There’s also the fact that Dwayne Johnson wants to get involved in another Disney franchise, with Star Wars, as the House of the Mouse owns Marvel Studios as well.

Dwayne Johnson is definitely eyeing up a role in the new Star Wars, previously he mentioned that his favorite character was the bounty hunter Boba Fett – perhaps giving a clue as to the type of role he is seeking – and says he would love to be part of it.

“‘Star Wars’,” Johnson said with a smile, reports SHH. “And that’s not to say that they need it. Obviously they’re doing very well. J.J. [Abrams] is just gonna crush it. I’m so excited. There’s a guy, by the way, who’s not just a brilliant director, but who honors and respects mythology. You’ve seen that with ‘Star Trek’ and you’re going to see that with ‘Star Wars.’ I’m very excited about that.”

Speaking of hero roles, Dwayne Johnson will also be playing Hercules in the Brett Ratner-directed film which is adapted from a Radical Comics graphic novel.

The Rock will also be headlining Wrestlemania as he is set to go one on one with WWE Superstar John Cena for the heavyweight championship of the world.

Bendis On New Mutants Next? Writing Guardians of the Galaxy and Heroes For Hire

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5253:]]

Out this February will be Brian Michael Bendis and Steve McNiven’s new Guardians of the Galaxy, which has a movie coming out, and was previously penned by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.

Coming soon will be a new Heroes For Hire from Bendis, which has a movie coming out, and was previously penned by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.

“I have a take, and it’s not Heroes for Hire exactly,” Bendis tells Newsarama. “As Luke [Cage] says in there [New Avengers], it’s a new take on it. I hit Mike [Deodato] with it, and Mike’s like, ‘I’m all in.'”

We can’t help but wonder what’s next for Brian Michael Bendis, but all the cards seem to point to New Mutants.

DnA went from Guardians of the Galaxy to Heroes/Villains For Hire to New Mutants.

They are currently putting out their own cosmic comic book with BOOM! Studios, The Hypernaturals.

And DnA also created a new children’s fantasy series of novels with Dragon Frontier.

At least those are safe.

And if anyone thinks we are on some kind of anti-Bendis crusade, we’re not.

Marvel Studios Looking At Heroes For Hire Movie With Luke Cage & Iron Fist

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5055:]]With Marvel’s A-List characters already appearing on the big screen, Disney is going to have to look deeper into the library of Marvel comics characters.

We first see this with the upcoming James Gunn directed Guardians of the Galaxy movie which features a group of lesser known characters that are a rag-tag bunch of space adventurers set to take on a cosmic force of epic proportions in the movie.

Now, we hear from head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, that another lesser known (amongst the general public) property is being looked at with Heroes For Hire.

Loeb tells BuzzFeed that they are looking at it with Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

“Just like we just announced Guardians of the Galaxy, we are certainly looking at the Heroes for Hire franchise which is Luke Cage and Iron Fist,” Loeb said.

Most recently, comic scribes Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, with art by Brad Walker, wrote a Heroes For Hire series for Marvel Comics as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book, with art by Walker as well, that the movie seems to be based on.

Interestingly enough, Marvel canceled DnA’s series to bring Brian Michael Bendis on board to take over, and they look to be doing the same with a new Heroes For Hire by Bendis later this year.
