Marvel and Fox Talks Rumored Again (Avengers & X-Men)

Once again it’s being said that Marvel and Fox could potentially come to an understanding.

It’s been rumored that an Avengers and X-Men movie is in the works for quite a while now.

Even the X-Men execs have stated they are interested in working with Marvel.

Now the latest comes from a producer on Kevin Smith’s Fatman on Batman podcast, Matt Key.

Matt Key doesn’t go so far as to make claims that an Avengers and X-Men movie is happening, but he does at least say there has been talk at Fox about hooking up with Marvel.

“I’ve heard from a few of my sources, my little birds that Fox and Marvel have… kind of talked, but not really, but like there’s interest from Fox, like, ‘Ooh, y’know, what they did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe…’ We’re years away from that ever possibly happening… but I think that’s what it would take… Fox joining hands with Marvel…”

If Spider-Man: Homecoming happens to be a billion dollar success, that may give Fox further incentive to work with Marvel.

As noted, if it ever does happen, it looks to be years off.

However, the Avengers and X-Men movie rumor did state 2020, so that’s at least four years away.

X-Men Rumored To Marvel & Avengers Again; Singer Leaving Franchise?

Once again it’s being rumored that the X-Men will be coming back to Marvel.

Back last July saw a rumor hit that Fox and Marvel are planning an Avengers and X-Men move for 2020.

Now it’s being said that following X-Men: Apocalypse, the X-Men will be rebooted within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though Fox will still retain the rights.

The latest info comes from Comic Planet Culture For Life that also states X-Men: Apocalypse will be Bryan Singer’s last X-Men movie.

It’s also again said an announcement will be forthcoming; the first rumor stated an announcement about the X-Men and Marvel Avengers movie would be made at this year’s Comic-Con, which follows the May premiere of X-Men: Apocalypse. Whether the announcement comes this year (if it happens) remains to be seen, but Disney could always announce the Avengers and X-Men event in 2017 at their D23 Expo which just moved to the month of July (the month Comic-Con is normally held).

Regarding any evidence that Fox is teaming with Marvel for Avengers and X-Men, back about two years ago Kevin Feige said “never say never” regarding Marvel teaming up with any of the other studios. Of course, now we know Marvel is working together with Sony on Spider-Man.

Notable X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner is also close to Marvel’s Kevin Feige, as the two worked together, and previously offered she would “love it” if the characters worked together with an enthusiastic “yeah, absolutely,” when questioned about a potential X-Men and Marvel crossover.

Possible further evidence may lie with the recent smash hit Deadpool movie, which features Marvel’s Avengers hellicarrier in the climactic scene. The Hellicarrier in Deadpool was confirmed by the concept artist: “[I] was asked to redesign the helicarrier so it looked as different as possible from the one in The Avengers. And it had to look like it had been taken apart in some places,” Emmanuel Shiu said.

It’s also suggested the previous rift between Marvel Comics and Fox may be over as Marvel Comics is now producing various X-Men related comic books. Marvel Comics previously killed off various X-Men characters including Wolverine and blew up the cast of the Fantastic Four reboot in one of their books. There is also the fact Marvel and Fox are working together on the FX X-Men TV series Legion and Hellfire.

Regarding Fantastic Four, no rumors have suggested the property may be going back to Marvel, but if the X-Men rumors pan out, more than likely Kevin Feige and Marvel will be coming in to save the day for FF as well.

Marvel & Fox Developing X-Men’s Hellfire Club TV Series

Hot on the heels of the Legion FX TV series announcement, now Marvel has announced a new FOX TV series based on the X-Men’s Hellfire Club.

Similar to the Legion announcement, once again we see no mention of the X-Men or mutants in the official info, but the X-Men producers are on board the project as well.

In the comics, the Hellfire Club members include Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost, Harry Leland, Donald Pierce, Tessa, Selene, Magneto, Storm, Shinobi Shaw, Trevor Fitzroy, Madelyne Pryor, Sat-yr-9, Phoenix and Sunspot.

FOX is in development on an action-adventure series HELLFIRE (working title), it was announced today by David Madden, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

Set in the late 1960s, the series — which will be produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television, with 20th Century Fox handling the physical production — follows a young Special Agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires – known as “The Hellfire Club” – to take over the world.

“We are thrilled to partner with Marvel to bring this world to television and build upon the vibrant mythology that has captivated fans for years,” said Madden. “These powerful and dynamic characters are complicated and larger-than-life, the pace and visual imagination are unrelenting, and the story takes place during one of the most explosive eras in recent history. We are so looking forward to working with this incredibly talented team.”

“HELLFIRE is a unique opportunity to be able to go deeper with some of these extraordinary characters, but to also dramatize new characters and give TV viewers a chance to experience this expanded world in an explosive way that everyone will be talking about,” commented Jonathan Davis, President, Creative Affairs, 20th Century Fox Television.  “The action at the center of HELLFIRE will be dynamic and will satisfy the rabid fans, but that said, newcomers will surely be addicted too!”

HELLFIRE is a co-production of 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television. Evan Katz (“24: Live Another Day”), Manny Coto (“24”), Patrick McKay (“Star Trek 3”) and JD Payne (“Star Trek 3”) are co-creators. McKay and Payne will write the pilot script, based on a story by Katz, Coto, McKay and Payne. Lauren Shuler Donner (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “The Wolverine”), Bryan Singer (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “X-Men: Apocalypse”), Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Fantastic Four”), Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, “Marvel’s Daredevil”) and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Marvel’s Daredevil”) will executive-produce the pilot, alongside Katz and Coto, who will serve as showrunners.

Avengers X-Men Movie Rumored For 2020 From Marvel & Fox

(fan art)

We’re not sure how legit this rumor is, but it’s being said Marvel and Fox Studios are mending their relationship and are planning an Avengers / X-Men movie for 2020.

The rumor comes from the Pete’s Basement Facebook page via Mikey Sutton on FB.

“Marvel and Fox are in the process of making up!!!” the post reads. “They are currently bringing a movie to us by 2020. The movie would feature the Avengers and X-Men.”

In the comments following the post, fans questioned the legitamacy of the information, with Pete’s Basement offering up that Mikey Sutton, owner of Paper Cuts in Seattle Washington, is their source.

Sutton followed up by posting he thinks the big announcement will be made at next year’s Comic-Con as the deal is still going through.

“Won’t be public until the deal is done,” Sutton offered. “Have a feeling they’ll drop it in San Diego next year.”

Marvel and Fox have been reportedly at odds over the film rights to the Fox-owned Marvel characters (Wolverine, X-Men, Deadpool, Fantastic Four), with Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter even going so far as to order the cancellation of the Marvel comics containing the characters as well as not having Disney produce Fox character merchandise.

Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige stated about a year and a half ago that anything’s possible when questioned about an Avengers /  X-Men movie.

“So I would say not anytime soon… Would we be in a position to team up with other studios that have a few of our characters, because we have so many characters ourselves?  But I would never say never,” Feige said.

Likewise, at one point, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner stated she would be up for a crossover between the two franchises as well.

“I would love it. I would love it,” Donner said. “I personally have close ties to Marvel because of Kevin Feige, because Kevin worked for me. But to take our characters and mingle them in the way that they were written, yeah, absolutely.”

Marvel did recently come to a deal with Sony to have Spider-Man featured in their movies, so as Feige stated above, a potential Marvel/Fox relationship can’t be totally ruled out.

The Wayback Machine: Werewolf (1987)

When it first premiered, FOX had some of the coolest new shows on TV. One of them was Werewolf, which starred John J. York, later of General Hospital fame, and The Rifleman himself, Chuck Connors, sadly in his last television role.

So many great moments from that show. It was fitting that Connors was on sporadically because the show’s protagonist, Eric Cord, reminded me of teen Mark McCain on Rifleman: a boy scout/goody two-shoes who was for some reason always getting tied up. Hmm …

Let’s find out more as I dial up the ol’ Wayback to 1987!

Werewolf follows the adventures of Eric, a college student transformed into a werewolf who undergoes a quest to rid himself of his curse by killing the apparent originator of his “bloodline,” a drifter named Janos Skorzeny (Connors). While pursuing Skorzeny, Cord himself is pursued by the persistent bounty hunter “Alamo” Joe Rogan (Lance LeGault). However, Cord then begins to hunt down Nicholas Remy (Brian Thompson), the real originator of the bloodline.

The show aired a two-hour pilot and 28 half-hour episodes before being cancelled in 1988. (Boo!)

Eric’s so-called life came to an end on the night that his roommate Ted hands him a gun loaded with silver bullets. Ted is a werewolf who has been killing people, and tells Eric to kill him, seeing this as his only way out. A red pentagram on Ted’s right palm is the sign that the change is coming.

Confronted with Eric’s disbelief, Ted decides to prove his situation, and asks Eric to tie him up in a chair (and thus it starts!) and wait until midnight, at which time he’d either see for himself or call in professional help. When midnight comes, Ted transforms into a werewolf, forcing his friend to shoot and kill him—but not before he manages to bite Eric.

Before long, Eric discovers a pentagram on his own palm, and soon after undergoes his own transformation into a seven-foot-tall werewolf. Now on the run for his friend’s murder, Eric spends the remainder of the series on a quest to find and kill the originator of his bloodline, the mysterious Janos Skorzeny, which will break the curse.

The series was similar in tone and formula to shows like The Fugitive and The Incredible Hulk, but achieved a contemporary feel by mixing a decidedly rock soundtrack with suspense-themed music. Eric wandered from place to place, hitchhiking, taking odd jobs and befriending various characters whose paths he crossed along the way, before invariably being transformed by his werewolf curse just in time to save his new friends from the clutches of some evildoer.

Though Eric appeared to have no control over his actions while in werewolf form and typically retained no memory of them afterward, he seemed to prey almost exclusively on villainous characters, never attacking or killing an innocent person. There were hints as the series progressed, however, that this self-control was slowly eroding, as indeed Ted had warned him it would, threatening to destroy Eric’s conscience/will if he could not end the curse soon.

Near the end of the series’ run, it was revealed that the originator of Eric Cord’s bloodline was not, in fact, the evil Janos Skorzeny but rather an even more powerful and malevolent werewolf named Nicholas Remy. The series ended before Eric could be rid of his curse.

The special effects techniques used in production were considered first-rate and impressive for the time, specifically the transformation sequences, in which, for example, the pentagram-shaped scar on Eric’s right hand would rise, thicken and grow three-dimensionally, and begin to bleed.

It was a good run and a cool show, certainly the coolest thing on FOX aside from the Simpsons bumpers on Tracey Ullman!

Gotham Series Will Be Similar To Nolan Batman; Not Connected To Movies

We get some further details about the Gotham TV series in addition to featuring a 12-year-old Bruce Wayne.

In their own report about the TCA press conference with Kevin Reilly, IGN offers that Gotham will be similar to the dark and gritty Christopher Nolan movies as well as not connected to the DC movie universe and Ben Affleck.

Some details mentioned:

Described as “Gotham on the brink” and  “operatic” and “larger-than-life.”

This report states Bruce will be about 13 years old.

Will function on its own, separate from the Warner Brothers DC cinematic universe. Reilly said: “We own all the rights. That’s what we’re licencing. They brought us the entire franchise for a very healthy licence fee. We’re not negotiating this piece meal. We have all of the underlying Batman rights for the entire franchise for this series.”

No connection to the Batman/Bruce Wayne that is Ben Affleck. Reilly said: “There will be an awareness of both and we’ll have to coordinate when we’re in the market place, but the productions are not piggy-backing off one another.”

The series will be in the vein of the grittier tone that Christopher Nolan established in his Dark Knight trilogy, it will be very organic to that world, though Nolan will not have a direct connection to the production.

We won’t see Batman’s cape and cowl till the series’ conclusion.

Series doesn’t start out with capes and costumes. Reilly offered: “We’re not starting in that world where the villains are in costume. You see markers for it that are kind of delicious. You begin to see the evolution of the eccentricities that become those characters, but you really sort of arc there. We don’t start out in capes and costumes.”

Warner Bros. hoping for 22 episodes; Reilly said he hopes for spinoffs.

No premiere date has been announced.

12-Year-Old Bruce Wayne To Be Featured In Gotham TV Series

Yesterday saw the news surface that the Detective James Gordon Gotham TV series slated for Fox will feature Batman villains and a young Bruce Wayne.

Now we get some further details from the TCA Press Tour presentation for Fox and Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly.

Via The Collider:

REILLY: Batman is in it, as young Bruce Wayne.  This is an origin story.  This is what I love about it.  This is not like some of the things where you’ve bought a franchise, but then you have a bunch of characters no one’s ever heard of, or an offshoot that we make up.  This is all of the classic Batman characters, with a young Bruce Wayne, with Detective Gordon before he’s Commissioner Gordon, with the Penguin, with the Riddler, and with the Joker.  All of those characters are going to arc and become who they are.  I’ve read the script.  It’s really good.  It’s going to be this operatic soap that has a slightly larger-than-life quality.  And we will arc a young Bruce Wayne from a child into the final episode of the series, when he will put on the cape.

REILLY:  We’re playing with that with casting now.  He’s a young boy, but my guess would be that he’d be somewhere around 12.

Should be an interesting show as obviously it will deal with Bruce following his parents’ death as well as most likely featuring Alfred.

Related: Further details include Gotham will be in the vein of the Nolan Batman movies and not connected to the DC movie universe.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Superbowl Spot Announced

Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be swinging into this season’s Superbowl as it has become known that Sony has purchased a spot to show off new footage.

Deadline has it that the Superbowl ads cost upwards of $4 million for a 30-second spot.

Paramount will also reveal a spot for Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction.

It’s reported that Disney has purchased a spot as well, but is undecided as of yet which movie to showcase. It’s possible it could be a Marvel Studios film as Captain America: The Winter Soldier debuts in April and Guardians of the Galaxy has an August 1st release.

Lionsgate has purchased a spot in the Superbowl pre-game show, and it’s said once again that Warner Bros. has opted out.

As Superbowl XLVIII airs on Fox, maybe we’ll get a spot for Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days Of Future Past as well.

Superbowl XLVIII airs February 2nd.

Young Bruce Wayne To Star In Gotham TV Series?

The new Commissioner Gordon Gotham TV series in development for Fox is reportedly being said to have a young Bruce Wayne as a featured character.

A casting call website, TV Shows Auditions Info, apparently has details on the character.

A 10-year-old Bruce Wayne is among the roles that are now being cast as series regulars on the upcoming Fox TV series “Gotham” which explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham City famous. Shooting on the pilot episode will get underway in March, 2014 and will center on Gotham City PD rookie homicide detective James Gordon who investigates the double murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

Although the “Gotham” central figure of James Gordon first appears in Detective Comics #27 when Bruce Wayne is Batman, [Bruno] Heller begins the series re-creating the characters pre-#27.

It was previously said the Gotham series wouldn’t feature Batman as it’s set before Detective Jim Gordon meets the Dark Knight, which looks to be the case.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen TV Series Announced For Fox

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9157:]]Fox has comitted to the pilot for a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen TV series.

Various Hollywood trade sites are reporting that Fox has committed to a “put pilot,” which means the network has agreed to produce the pilot episode.

However, if for some reason the pilot doesn’t get aired, the studio will have to pay vast penalties (which usually guarantees that the pilot will air).

The new Fox show is said to be based on the Alan Moore graphic novel of the same name set in the Victorian-era featuring characters such as Captain Nemo, Allan Quatermain, Dracula’s Mina Harker, the Invisible Man and Dr Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.

More than likely the League of Extraordinary Gentleman TV series will not be associated with the 2003 film that starred Sean Connery.

It’s reported that Michael Green (Green Lantern, Heroes, Smallville) will be the pilot writer and executive producer, and will also serve as showrunner if the series should get picked up for a full run.

Both Alan Moore and the graphic novel artist, Kevin O’Neill, are said not to be involved.
