Doctor Strange Films Next Spring; Casting Coming Soon

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15927:]]

Kevin Feige offered an update on the Doctor Strange movie while appearing at CineEurope in Bacelona (via Total Film):

“Scott Derrickson has been announced as the director. Doctor Strange is a character that I’ve been interested in for many, many years and that I’ve talked about in interviews for probably 14 years, because I believe it’s very, very important for us to explore every nook and cranny of the comic-book universe and we’ve done the street-level heroes, and we’ve done the billionaire superheroes [on Earth]. We’ve now done the cosmic side with Thor and Avengers and most obviously with Guardians, but there’s a whole other side of the Marvel comics, which is that supernatural side – the interdimensional side of the Marvel universe, and Doctor Strange is, I believe, our entry point into that other realm, which has dozens of characters and storylines all of its own.”

“So Strange is very, very important, not just because it’s an amazing character study, and a journey of a man who’s gone from this very arrogant surgeon to somebody who is quite zen and literally keeps all of reality together on a daily basis, but it also is going to open up a whole other side of storytelling for our movies. So we’re about to hire a writer to redo a draft, and we think we’ll be casting probably in the next month or two, and announcing an actor, and then we get into production in the spring of next year.”

The writer Feige mentions is said to be John Spaihts, known for the first Prometheus draft and The Darkest Hour.

Rumored for the role of Stephen Strange is Jared Leto, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch.

More than likely announcements will be coming next month at Comic-Con.

Scott Derrickson To Direct Doctor Strange Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15636:]]

It’s said Marvel Studios’ choice to direct the Doctor Strange movie is Scott Derrickson.

Variety reports that Scott Derrickson is in final talks with Marvel and is expected to sign.

Scott Derrickson directed Hellraiser: Inferno, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Sinister, the upcoming Deliver Us from Evil film and just announced Two Eyes Staring.

It’s stated the lead will be announced with Stephen Strange who was recently mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Producers on the Doctor Strange movie include Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Stephen Broussard.

It’s also said Marvel Studios expects Scott Derrickson to bring the same dark and eerie storytelling style he is known for to the Doctor Strange movie while not breaking the bank on the budget.

Update: Jared Leto rumored for Doctor Strange.

Spoiler Surprise For Captain America 2

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14697:]]

What follows is a surprise spoiler for Captain America 2.

Without spoiling specifics, it’s learned that Captain America 2 features some sort of reference to Doctor Strange.

The Collider spoke to Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige questioning if it was always a part of the script or if the Doctor Strange reference was added in later.

Feige said it was always a part of the movie.

Kevin Feige was also asked if it meant a hint about any announcement coming, to which he smiled, shook his head sideways and responded, “No.”

Doctor Strange looks to be a part of Marvel Studios Phase 3 plans.

It was mentioned that the Doctor Strange reference in Captain America 2 happened pretty quick, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet be on the look out.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has an April 4, 2014 release directed by the Russ Bros. starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily Van Camp, Hayley Atwell and Robert Redford.

Scott Derrickson Rumored To Possibility Direct Doctor Strange

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:14275:]]

Add one more potential name to the list of possible directors for the Doctor Strange movie with Scott Derrickson.

According to a tweet from a writer at THR, Derrickson is stated to be up for the Marvel Studios movie featuring the Sorceror Supreme.

Previously, four different names were rumored for Doctor Strange, but Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige stated they weren’t true.

Scott Derrickson is known for directing Sinister, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Hellraiser: Inferno and most recently the Deliver Us From Evil horror movie starring Eric Bana.

The previous four names mentioned include Mark Andrews, Nikolaj Arcel, Dean Israelite and Jonathan Levine.

Feige did state they are meeting with directors, but that none of the four names were correct. It’s possible they were just name-dropped by the actor’s reps as Hollywood likes to do.

Most recently, Mattew Modine stated he is interested in playing the lead role of Stephen Strange.

Stan Lee Says Inhumans Movie Probably Coming & Ben Affleck Will Be A Great Batman (Video)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:11095:]]

Stan Lee once again mentions upcoming potential Marvel Studios movies with Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Inhumans.

This is at least the third time in the last year or so that Stan Lee has mentioned them as being in development, which would most likely be for the Marvel Studios Phase 3 plans.

We also know it looks likely that Vin Diesel will be attached to one of them as Diesel said he will be launching a new franchise with Marvel in 2016; perhaps it is Inhumans after all, and Diesel will play Black Bolt.

Below in the following video (via TooFab), Stan Lee first talks about Ben Affleck as Batman stating he thinks he will do a great job.

Stan Lee then goes on to say about the potential Marvel Studios Phase 3 movies: “They are going to do the Black Panther. They are going to use Doctor Strange. They are going to do Ant-Man. They are going to do the Guardians of the Galaxy. They will probably do the Inhumans. They are going to do all of them sooner or later.”

Interestingly enough, Marvel Comics is launching a new Inhumans event and ongoing comic book series at the beginning of 2014. Marvel usually doesn’t bother much with the lesser known characters (i.e. Guardians of the Galaxy) unless something bigger is being planned in the movies or TV.

No Joseph Gordon-Levitt For Doctor Strange Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9309:]]

Earlier in the week it was apparently rumored that Marvel Studios was eyeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the role of Doctor Strange.

Well, it’s not true.

The Huffington Post reached out to Joseph Gordon-Levitt about the Doctor Strange rumor with the actor’s reps responding, “Not true.”

Marvel Studios is going forth with a Doctor Strange movie, with some speculating that the character will actually be appearing first in Thor 2.

If that’s the case, then Doctor Strange will already have been cast.

It’s quite possible we’ll learn more about the Doctor Strange movie at this week’s Comic-Con as Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige will be on hand with panels for Thor 2 and Captain America 2.

It’s also thought that more than likely the Doctor Strange movie will be a part of the Marvel Studios Phase 3 plans.

Stan Lee Says Silver Surfer Movie A Possibility; States Doctor Strange & Black Panther Again

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9087:]]

Back in November of 2012, Stan Lee said Doctor Strange, Black Panther and the Inhumans were either being worked on or are in development.

Now, coming out of Wizard World NYC (via MTV), Stan “The Man” says more of the same, confirming Doctor Strange and Black Panther, but also stating Silver Surfer.

Well, let me put it to you this way: Back at Marvel, they are frantically looking for what is the next one they’re going to do. There is no way they won’t eventually do a Silver Surfer movie. It may not be for a few years because they’re thinking and working on Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy. Everything we have. And the fans seem to want all of them. But they’ll get around to a Silver Surfer feature because he’s a wonderful character.

Currently, Fox Studios owns the rights to Silver Surfer, but interestingly enough it was rumored that Disney tried to nab the rights to the character as well as Galactus in exchange for Daredevil.

It’s since been made known that Daredevil has reverted back to Disney/Marvel Studios, with Fox stating they are not letting go of the Silver Surfer.

Many fans think that the Silver Surfer will appear in the new Fantastic Four reboot being directed by Josh Trank.

Perhaps a Silver Surfer spinoff will come from that?

Kevin Feige Says There Is Much More To Be Done With The Cosmic Universe of Marvel Movies

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7457:]]

Good news for Marvel Cosmic fans, it looks like Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy are just scatching the surface of the Marvel Cosmic Movie U.

In a recent interview with Super Hero Hype, Feige is asked if it’s possible to bring a character like Daredevil into the mix, as the Marvel Studios movies seem to be more cosmic-oriented.

Feige’s response doesn’t seem too promising for street-level fans, but for fans of the epic science-fiction cosmic movies, it’s looking good (and Feige is a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan to boot).

No, I think that frankly would be easy. We’re still exploring the stuff that’s not as easy, which is we’ve been to Asgard, we’ve been through the Bifrost. We peeked a little bit through that portal at the end of the Avengers and now obviously in “Thor: The Dark World” and particularly in “Guardians of the Galaxy” we’re going full bore through that portal to literally the other side of the Marvel Universe, the entire universe, to explore the cosmic side of our characters and our storylines. That I think we’ve only still experienced the surface of that, and there’s much more to be done there.

Feige also recently said Doctor Strange is next, what other cosmic characters would you like to see?

A Richard Rider Nova movie? How about an Adam Warlock movie?

The Avengers 2 assembles May 1, 2015 with Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, the Guardians of the Galaxy movie on August 1, 2014 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015..

Kevin Feige Says Doctor Strange Movie Is Next

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:7451:]]Good news, Doctor Strange fans!

We’ve been hearing of a Doctor Strange movie for some time, and now that Iron Man 3 is finished, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige says they are setting their sites on the Sorcerer Supreme next.

Kevin Feige told Collider the following:

Dr. Strange is something that I talk about often and it’s sort of next up for us to dig into and explore.  Our executive producer of Iron Man 3, having done Captain America: The First Avenger and as that was finishing he started working on the bones that would become Iron Man 3, and now that he’s finished with Iron Man 3, he’s working on the bones that would become Doctor Strange.  Now that Iron Man 3 is finished, some of our quote-unquote spare time is going to be devoted to trying to crack Strange.

So when will the Doctor Strange movie hit? Looks to possibly be a Marvel Studios Phase 3 film.

As we look past 2015, past Avengers 2 and Ant-Man, I think Dr. Strange should be one of the next movies in the years following that.

Justin Theroux Rumored As Sorceror Supreme For Doctor Strange Movie

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6971:]]

We get a rumor that Marvel Studios is looking at Justin Theroux to play Doctor Strange in their Phase 3 movie.

It’s been said for quite some time that Marvel Studios is going forward with a Doctor Strange movie, and there has even been rumor of the Doc in Thor 2.

Chud.com has it from an inside source that Justin Theroux is involved with Doctor Strange, but it’s unknown if he is the only actor up for the role.

Justin Theroux is known for Wanderlust, Parks and Recreation, Charlie’s Angels, and American Psycho.

Perhaps Justin Theroux has already been cast as Doctor Strange and we’ll get a cameo of the actor in one of the Phase 2 movies.

Kevin Feige Teases New Characters For The Avengers A Second Time; Mentions Doctor Strange

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6617:]]We get a second mention of there being different Avengers for the Marvel Studios movies as this time Kevin Feige makes reference to using new characters once again.

Previously, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige remarked that part of the fun is having a revolving team, and now he says something similar.

Speaking to the Italian website, BestMovie, Feige says (translated), “I would love to also see new superheroes in the ranks of the Avengers. We shall see!”

And one of those heroes could be Doctor Strange as it looks as if the good Doc will be getting his own Marvel Studios Phase 3 movie, and he’s also wanted on the big screen by Feige.

“Dr. Strange!” Kevin Feige replies when asked which character would he love to see in a movie. “I love the aura of mystery that surrounds this superhero and the magical world that surrounds him. We’ve never faced anything like this and there is a lot of material that we could exploit.”

No worries though, as Feige addresses whether some of the originals will be sticking around.

“Currently Phase 3 is still developing,” Feige said. “99.9% of our time is used for Phase 2 and the production of The Avengers 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy keeps us very busy. Definitely not leaving aside the old glories and we’ll see familiar faces as well as Iron Man, Thor and Captain America.”

The Doctor Strange Easter Egg In Iron Man 3 With Stephanie Szostak As Ellen Brandt

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:6245:]]We finally find out which character Stephanie Szostak will be playing in Iron Man 3, and it’s apparently not the rumored Janet Van Dyne aka The Wasp, but it’s listed as actually being Ellen Brandt.

As Marvel Comics fans may know, Ellen Brandt really has a lot to do with Man-Thing, but she also was involved with A.I.M — as well as Doctor Strange.

First, let’s get into her history with Man-Thing.

But before we begin, what I find interesting about Man-Thing related to Iron Man 3 is, if he’s used in the movie, he sorta trumps Guillermo Del Toro’s planned Justice League Dark movie which is set to include Swamp Thing. Joss Whedon already did it with Thanos and Darkseid, so why not again?

But getting back to Ellen Brandt, who is now listed on the Iron Man 3 IMDb page for Stephanie Szostak, she was in part responsible for the creation of Man-Thing as she was romantically involved with the scientist that that ended up becoming the guardian of the Nexus of Realities, Ted Sallis

Sallis works for S.H.I.E.L.D attempting to re-create Captain America’s lost Super-Soldier serum; however, A.I.M. (they are in Iron Man 3) sends one of their agents to infiltrate the project who Brandt has an affair with, and she turns on Sallis, shooting him. Sallis is then forced to use his experimental serum on himself, resulting in the Man-Thing.

Now, will all this be in Iron Man 3? On top of everything else?

Could be.

But there is an interesting part of this story, and that is, it ties to Doctor Strange. Brandt eventually sees the error of her ways years later and attempts to save Man-Thing from being hunted by the locals, seemingly sacrificing herself. However, Doctor Strange is there to make the save.

Again, this sounds more like an entire movie of its own, so my guess it won’t go exactly like this in Iron Man 3.

They could very well have Stephanie Szostak as an AIM Agent and even Sallis as a scientist.

They could simply have Doctor Strange be there as his regular old Doctor self, saving Sallis from gun shot wounds. Or “with a wink” using his magic to heal him.

We already know there are plans for a Doctor Strange movie; Kevin Feige did say that there will be hints of what’s to come in Iron Man 3 that might not be recognized at first, and Doc is rumored for Thor 2 as well.

And as we said previously, we think Doctor Strange is the tie that binds the Marvel Phase 2 movies much like an Agent Coulson or Samuel L. Jackson did with the first phase.

There’s also one other cool possiblity/Easter Egg that might be associated: Man-Thing scarred Brandt’s face; any chance she becomes Madam Masque?

Iron Man 3 blasts off May 3rd, 2013 directed by Shane Black and starring Robert DowneyJr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Guy pearce and James Badge Dale.

Kevin Feige Mentions Different Team For The Avengers 2; Death of Captain America?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5998:]]We previously heard from Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige that a Doctor Strange movie was being devloped for their Phase 3 Plans, now we hear more about that as well as The Avengers 2.

Feige talks more about Doctor Strange with SFX Magazine (Via Digital Spy) as well as the magic element of Marvel.

“If and when we enter the magic arena, it will be through Doctor Strange,” Feige said. “Sure, obviously. And that’s to me what’s exciting about Doctor Strange.”

Feige also went on to make a comment that the line-up of Assemblers in The Avengers 2 may be different than the first.

“I think it’s not a secret that Joss and I and all of us at Marvel think that part of the fun of Avengers is the rotating team, for sure,” he said.

Hmmm…perhaps a member or two of the Guardians of the Galaxy will be joining the team? We just heard from Mark Ruffalo who said the Hulk will be featured in The Avengers 2. Does that mean a regular member might not? And if so, could that mean that one, two or more could meet their maker?

Our money would be on Captain America and/or Thor, with better odds on the former if this is the case.

Planet Hulk & World War Hulk Rumored For Avenger 3 & Marvel Phase Three Movies

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5455:]]Way back last September, Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige remarked about doing more with the Hulk.

As the Hulk was such a hit in The Avengers movie and arguably stole the show, fans have been wondering since last may if the Hulk will ever be featured in his own movie again.

The previous Hulk movies were arguably not very good, but Kevin Feige still said that he thinks the Hulk could carry his own movie.

In that September interview, MTV pressed Feige about comic book scribe Greg Pak’s “Planet Hulk” and “World War Hulk” storyline, with Feige responding that he thought both were cool stories.

Are they cool enough for their own movies? Could be.

The latest rumor to come out of Latino Review is that Marvel Studios is, indeed, adapting Greg Pak’s “Planet Hulk” and “World War Hulk” for their Phase 3 plans.

If you recall back in July, LR was given a batch of Iron Man 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy spoilers with Marvel Studios apparently investigating the leaks and trying to squeeze info out from them about their source, actually bullying them from the sounds of it.

Well, this new Hulk info is payback for that according to LR.

They state at some point – could be The Avengers 2 – Hulk goes ballistic and gets sent off to space by the Marvel Studios version of the Illuminati. Marvel Studios then does a Planet Hulk movie and then possibly back to The Avengers 3 for “World War Hulk.”

Interesting enough, we’ve heard mention of plans for Doctor Strange in Phase 2, a member of the Illuminati. And what’s also interesting is that Fox Studios owns the rights to Professor X, a card carrying member as well, but in the Marvel Comics, Black Panther has recently become a member of the Illuminati, who could easily fill-in for Xavier. (Actually, my guess would be they wouldn’t go the “Illuminati” route specifically, but just be a general group decision). And we also know that Marvel Comics has to follow Marvel Studios movie guidelines, and we also recently heard mention that Thor 2‘s Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje wants the Black Panther Movie.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5456:]]So at least it sounds like it can all fit.

There’s also the fact that Marvel put out a Planet Hulk DVD movie, which could be looked at as a testing grounds of sorts for the movies.

Stan Lee said an Inhumans movie is in the works, with it recently announced that an animated motion-comics Inhumans movie is coming out soon as well (Iron Man Extremis was done and now we have Iron Man 3).

For the fans of the “Planet Hulk” comic book that might be wondering what they would do about the use of the Silver Surfer (owned by Fox Studios), in the DVD movie Beta Ray Bill was used. Who knows? Maybe we’ll still see Beta Ray Bill in Thor 2 just yet.

Doctor Strange & Ant-Man Movie Part Of Marvel Studios Phase 3 Plans

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5256:]]If you have been following any of the Thor 2, “The Dark World,” news you know that Doctor Strange is rumored to appear.

At one time it was even said that Viggo Mortensen would be playing the Sorcerer Supreme, with a Marvel exec apparently shooting down the rumor.

We actually think that Doctor Stephen Strange might be the tie that binds the Marvel Studios Phase Two movies, much the way Agent Coulson or Nick Fury did with the Phase One Plans, as Strange would make the most sense appearing in Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2 and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Speaking with MTV, Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios producer and president, lets is be known that Doctor Strange will be a part of their Phase 3 plans along with Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man movie.

‘Ant-Man’ is definitely part of Phase Three. Like ‘Iron Man 3,’ it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie…I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004.  He asked me what Marvel was doing with ‘Ant-Man’ — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an ‘Ant-Man’ origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”

“Beyond that… ‘Ant-Man’ is the only one officially announced, but you probably don’t have to look too far to guess at the next list of characters we’re toying with and beginning to develop…’Doctor Strange,’ which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them.  He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is ‘Ant-Man,’ which keeps us excited.”

Some other possibilities for Marvel Studios’ Phase 3 plans include a Heroes For Hire movie, as head of Marvel TV, Jeph Loeb, hinted at such.

A couple others are Black Panther and Inhumans as Stan Lee let it be known that there definitely would be a Doctor Strange movie with mention of the two.

Thor 2 actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje said he is interested in playing Black Panther and even said he is in talks to play another Marvel Studios character.

“Definitely A Doctor Strange Movie” Says Stan Lee; Inhumans & Black Panther Being Developed

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:3805:]]

Will the Doctor Strange movie be part of Marvel Studios “Phase 3” films?

If Stan Lee is correct, it seems likely.

Stan Lee attended the recent Savannah Film Fest where “The Man” answered audience questions with one being about future super hero movies (via The District).

Not only does Stan Lee say that a Doctor Strange movie is being made, but also Black Panther and the Inhumans.

“Oh they are all being made into movies! I can tell you there will definitely be a Dr. Strange movie! They are working on Antman, which requires really small cameras! Black Panther is being developed, one of my favorites…the Inhumans…All the hero’s will eventually be made into movies.”

All three of the movies that Stan Lee mentioned have been said to be in development at one time or another. The latest in regards to Doctor Strange is that he will be appearing in Thor 2, and we here at Cosmic Book News think Strange might be filling Coulson’s role in the Marvel “Phase Two” movies of bringing them all together, much like Coulson did for Marvel’s “Phase One” movies and The Avengers.

It’s quite possible that Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and the Inhumans could make up Marvel’s “Phase Three” movie leading to “The Avengers 3.” With Thanos said to be the big bad guy of “The Avengers 2,” who would fit for the third? Ultron?

Cool Doctor Strange Fan-Made Movie Poster

With Doctor Strange being rumored in Thor 2 and even Guillermo Del Toro stating he wouldn’t mind taking a crack at the good doctor, a fan put together the following Doctor Strange movie poster.

In addition, Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wouldn’t mind taking a stab at the comic book version as well.

Who knows? Maybe we’ll see Doctor Strange in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Now that Coulson is “dead,” Marvel will need someone to tie all their Phase 2 movies together.

Maybe it’s Strange.
