Blacksad: Amarillo

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:17609:]]

Created by:

Juan Diaz Canales & Juanjo Guarnido

Published by: Dark Horse Comics

An unexpected trip

Feline Detective John Blacksad is hired to drive a yellow Cadillac Eldorado across America. The only problem? The car is stolen. Even worse — Blacksad is a suspect! The fifth in a series of volumes from Canales and Guarnido, Blacksad: Amarillo is a standalone story worth picking up. Because If there’s something I love just as much as detective stories it’s road trips, and this story has both elements in spades.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:17610:]]

A work of art

This is one of the most stunning books I have on my shelf. I’d heard of Blacksad in the past, but never took the time to look into the series. Canales and Guarnido have already done four volumes previous to this installment, and I can only hope they’re as well written and illustrated as this new adventure. The characters are well-written, the environments are rich, and the artwork makes me wish this volume was another hundred pages longer.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:17611:]]

Why it’s a great alternative

What I like most about this story is that it’s visually different than most major comics in the United States. Blacksad doesn’t have the traditional American comic book style, and the story structure doesn’t feel like a four-issue mini-series or one-shot. The narrative rolls off the pages like a novella or a film instead of being segmented and divided into issues or chapters. Usually, with things shorter than graphic novels, you don’t get that kind of storytelling in a single volume.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:17612:]]

Who would like Blacksad: Amarillo?

Fans of animated Disney films were the first people I thought of after reading this comic. While it doesn’t feel like a Disney story it still has that anthropomorphic animal element that made movies like Robin Hood a delight. It’s definitely for people who love detective stories, beatnik characters, and road trip narratives. If there’s room on your list for this beautiful hardcover then don’t hesitate to grab it for your shelf.

Ken Porter also writes comic books including “Ink Ribbon” from Visionary Comics. Ken was also the winner of last year’s Top Cow Talent Search contest and was recently published in “Artifacts” #33.

Big Damn Sin City – Alternative Comics Beat

Sin City (Big Damn Sin City Collection)

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:16888:]]

Written and drawn by Frank Miller

Published by Dark Horse

A collection to kill for

My first experience with Sin City was the Robert Rodriguez film that adapted the Frank Miller series. With Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For being released I figured it was the perfect time to look over the source material for the stylistic pair of films.

While the movie was my first exposure it’s still been a long time since I’ve sat down and watched the whole thing. Returning to the world where Marv leaps through police cars and the prostitutes of Old Town gut people was a nostalgic trip down a dark alley. Not only did I get to relive the moments I saw on the big screen, I also got to experience them the way they were originally supposed to be enjoyed. And the Big Damn collection contains every bit of Sin City you could possibly find.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:16886:]]

A mighty hardcover

It’s no slim volume. I had to read most of it at home. I tried bringing it to coffee shops but it’s over 1300 pages and is such a beautiful book that I didn’t want to risk damaging or losing my copy. The oversized pages and the stark black and white make for a charged read. Each time I turned the page I fell a little more in love with the static but lively images that Miller created during the series’ run.

Why it’s a great alternative

The crime genre is nothing new to comic books. Superhero stories have almost always dominated, but crime stories have always been there to offer the gritty and violent stories found in pulp magazines and film noir. Sin City distills the crime genre into its darkest and condensed form. The heroes are just as dangerous as the villains, lovers stab each other in the back at the drop of a hat, and justice is served under the table. As an alternative to regular superhero stories, this is one of the veers toward the left that takes you down a whole new and treacherous road.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:16887:]]

Who would enjoy Sin City?

This collection itself is for anyone that enjoys oversized omnibus collections. It’s beautifully crafted and looks fantastic on the shelf. While the story is definitely for fans of old detective or crime novels, as well as crime noir films that live in the morally gray area of life.

Ken Porter also writes comic books including “Ink Ribbon” from Visionary Comics. Ken was also the winner of last year’s Top Cow Talent Search contest and was recently published in “Artifacts” #33.

Sledgehammer 44

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15716:]]

Written by: Mike Mignola and John Arcudi

Art by: Jason Latour

Art by: Laurence Campbell

Colors by: Dave Stewart

Introduction

There’s just something absolutely spellbinding about the “Mignola-verse” that you can’t find at any other major comic book publisher. From Hellboy to Lobster Johnson you can find heartfelt storytelling, chilling men and monsters, and adventure that doesn’t show up on the pages of any other books.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15717:]]

When I heard about Sledgehammer 44 I was immediately interested in the story. I picked up the first issue at my local comic book store and devoured it, only to read it again later that day. The only problem is that, due to a snafu with my pull-list, I never got the other issues. When the trade paperback of the series was released I knew I had to have the collection. After reading it I kicked myself for not having caught up sooner. And, when I finished the collection, I knew that I was going to write an Alternative Comics Beat about the series.

The Story

The story takes place during World War II as a group of American soldiers provide back-up for a secret mission against a German facility. The mission is to provide cover for the operative known as Sledgehammer — a  man in a giant suit of armor with the power to discharge intense energy. As the soldiers participate in the operation, a freak accident puts a new man in the suit and takes the story in a fascinating new direction. Including the return of a villain once seen in a Lobster Johnson tale.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15718:]]

The Artwork and Writing

Jason Latour, who I raved about with Southern Bastards not too long ago, outdoes himself with the artwork. The character’s faces, the energy attacks, and emotions that rise and fall on each page are well worth the admission. And Laurence Campbell’s story arc has just the same amount of punch and vigor that Latour’s issues have. Campbell’s Black Flame is one of the creepiest renditions of the character, and I can’t wait to go and find more of his work at Dark Horse or other publishers.

Mignola and Arcudi have a knack for playing in this sandbox. Whether it’s together or separate, they know how to weave these tales in and out of touching moments of humanity and examples of war-torn horror.

Why it’s a great alternative?

The WWII superhero is no new concept. While it could be called a mixture of Iron Man and Captain America, there are elements to this character and concept that strays very far away from the Marvel characters. It might be a WWII story, but it’s one of those interesting action and horror blends that can only be found in the Mignola books at Dark Horse. It’s a fantastic alternative from the regular superhero narrative, where everyone is safe and the status quo is always restored at the end.

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:15719:]]

Who would enjoy this collection?

I think that fans of Hellboy are definitely going to enjoy this series. It’s a given that if you enjoy Mignola’s work and other titles that this one is up your alley. I would also recommend that fans of characters like Captain America or Iron Man give this a shot, or fans of war comics in general. Of course being a fan of Southern Bastards helps for the beautiful Latour art, and anyone familiar with Arcudi or Campbell will want to check out their work in this volume as well.

Ken Porter is presently interning with Cosmic Book News and also writes comic books including “Ink Ribbon” from Visionary Comics. Ken was also the winner of last year’s Top Cow Talent Search contest and was recently published in “Artifacts” #33.

WALTER SIMONSON’S CLASSIC

ROBOCOP VS. THE TERMINATOR SERIES!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:13905:]]

MILWAUKIE, OR, FEBRUARY 21—Nearly twenty years after its first publication, the classic four-issue miniseries that teamed two great characters with two great creators, Frank Miller and Walter Simonson’s RoboCop versus The Terminator, returns to print in two formats: a hardcover graphic novel and a gallery edition!

Comics’ greatest creators pit the supreme machine killer against the ultimate cybernetic cop in one of the most celebrated crossovers ever! When fate reveals that the technology that built RoboCop will lead to the creation of Skynet, Alex Murphy must engage in time-twisting battle against both the murderous computer network and the human resistance fighters out to destroy him! This newly restored collection features remastered colors from Steve Oliff and an introduction by 2 Guns writer Steven Grant!

The super deluxe RoboCop verus The Terminator Gallery Edition ushers in Dark Horse’s new gallery series format—reprinting Walter Simonson’s original art at full size, exactly as it appeared on his drawing table! In addition to the full story, the gallery edition provides the greatest insight available into Simonson’s process, with pages of his original pencils and promotional art faithfully reproduced, along with a revealing foreword by the artist himself!

“When Frank first sent me the story for the series, I loved it. And it was both a treat and a challenge to try to bring it to life in pictures,” said Walter Simonson. “I couldn’t be more pleased to see RoboCop versus The Terminator back in print after all these years. I can only hope that a new generation of readers will take as much delight in discovering the series as we took in creating it.”

The RoboCop versus The Terminator hardcover graphic novel collection arrives on sale at finer comic shops everywhere on July 2, 2014, for $24.99. The gallery edition will be available on July 9 for $125.00.

NYCC: Greg Rucka Comes To Dark Horse With Veil

Press Release

GREG RUCKA COMES TO DARK HORSE WITH THE ALL-NEW ORIGINAL SERIES VEIL!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:11669:]]

NEW YORK, NY, OCTOBER 11—It was announced officially today on Dark Horse’s horror panel at New York Comic Con that Greg Rucka would be bringing his latest heroine to Dark Horse in the new series Veil!

The story opens when a beautiful girl wakes up in an abandoned subway station with no memory of how she got there. When men try to hurt her . . . they wind up dead. Where did she come from? And what is she capable of?

This new series, drawn by Toni Fejzula, comes as the perfect addition to a heroine lineup that includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ghost, and Serenity’s River Tam. Dark Horse is proud to introduce comics’ next leading lady!

“I’ve been tossing the idea behind Veil around for over a decade, seriously, but it wasn’t until Scott Allie pulled the string on it that it came to life,” said writer Greg Rucka. “It’s a very different kind of tale for me, very different in what I’m trying to accomplish, and working with Dark Horse, working with Toni, is a rare opportunity to try to bring this thing to life. The opportunity Dark Horse is providing us is amazing.”

“There are a lot of characters in comics that are very dangerous, and a lot that bring danger with them wherever they go. Veil gives that concept a whole new and very deadly meaning,” said Dark Horse’s editor in chief, Scott Allie. “I don’t know if I can classify her as an antihero. But she’s a character that’s going to surprise you in a lot of ways. Greg does gritty urban drama like no one else, and here he’s adding to it some things you’ve never seen from him before.”

The first part of this brand-new five-issue story by multiple Eisner Award winner Greg Rucka (LazarusQueen & Country, Stumptown) arrives on sale March 5, 2014.

Dark Horse and Dynamite Announce The Shadow Vs. Grendel Crossover

Press Release

DARK HORSE AND DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCE AN

EPIC CROSSOVER EVENT!

New York Comic Con kicks off with news of an all-new Matt Wagner series ‘The Shadow vs. Grendel!’

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:11539:]]
NEW YORK, NY, OCTOBER 7–Days before the doors open on one of the year’s largest events in pop culture, Dark Horse Comics and Dynamite Entertainment announce the first in a series of upcoming crossovers. Matt Wagner will write and draw an all-new Grendel story steeped in the pulp-noir world of The Shadow!

The Shadow is one of the most renowned and enduring pop-culture creations of all time, a multi-media character that established the original archetype of the modern super-hero. Grendel, Matt Wagner’s epic saga of dark aggression, has been a trailblazing powerhouse of independent comics for over thirty years and, for many fans, the elegant and deadly Hunter Rose is the quintessential version of the character. Combined, these legendary and iconic characters represent over a century of publishing history!

Best-selling author Hunter Rose is secretly the masked assassin and criminal overlord known only as Grendel. When an arcane artifact comes into his possession, Grendel finds himself thrust into a world for which he seems destined, where style and violence intersect to form a dazzling golden age. He will soon discover that this New York also has a fearsome protector—a dark and mysterious avenger whose name is spoken in hushed whispers, The Shadow!

“Ever since the smash success of my two previous crossover events (with Batman), I’ve had many offers over the years to see Grendel cross blades with a varied host of other characters,” comments Grendel creator, Matt Wagner. “But none of those opportunities ever excited me as much as this possibility. I’ve been a huge fan of The Shadow for many, many years and my love of the character finally saw fruition when I got the chance to literally re-define his origins by writing The Shadow: Year One for Dynamite. To have the chance to both write and draw The Shadow facing my own creation is something of a dream come true! It’s also adds yet another instant classic to my long legacy of Grendel projects with Dark Horse Comics.”

“I’m looking forward to this project for many reasons, not the least of which is Matt Wagner’s return as both writer and artist of Grendel” said Dark Horse president and publisher, Mike Richardson. “The fact that I share Matt’s enthusiasm for one of the greatest fictional characters of all time, The Shadow, makes it all the more exciting. Dark Horse and Dynamite are proud to announce this great comic series from one of comics’ premier creators.”

“I’ve known and been a fan of Matt’s since Grendel first appeared in the early ‘80’s, and one of the first prestige comics I bought was the Terminator by Matt with James Robinson. Matt’s an incredible story teller and has written three series for Dynamite, including The Shadow: Year One” said Dynamite publisher, Nick Barucci. “When the idea for a Grendel/Shadow cross-over was suggested, and Matt stated that he would write it AND illustrate the series in a Prestige format, let’s just say that you can’t quantify the excitement in our offices. This is such an incredible series, and the first of more projects that Dynamite and Dark Horse are announcing.”

This exciting new three issue series will be released in three 48 page prestige format issues in 2014!

First Look At New Firefly/Serenity Comic Book From Dark Horse

It looks like Joss Whedon’s Firefly will live on in comic book form as Dark Horse has released a batch of teaser images.

They even noted on their blog that “Dark Horse is proud to be able to keep Mal and his crew flying with new comics and products.”

Dark Horse also reprints the Joss Whedon 2005 limited edition series, Serenity: Those Left Behind and related comics.

Firefly aired on Fox for only one season in 2002, but to huge audience acclaim. 2005 saw the Serenity movie air with fans never satisfied that the show was canceled early.

The series starred Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau and Ron Glass.

A Firefly video game is also in the works, and Whedon is bringing Ron Glass on board Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. set for ABC this Fall.

Cosmic Book News reached out to Dark Horse for more info about the potential new Firefly/Serenity comic book series, but we may first get something coming out of this weekend’s Toronto Fan Expo.

Dark Horse Announces Halo Ongoing Comic Book Series With “Escalation”

Press Release

DARK HORSE ANNOUNCES ALL-NEW

HALO® ONGOING SERIES: ESCALATION!

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:9687:]]

SAN DIEGO, CA, JULY 22—Announced at Comic-Con International, 343 Studios’ Frank O’Connor announced that Dark Horse Comics would publish an all-new ongoing series later this year based on the massive video game franchise Halo.

This news comes prior to next month’s release of the first issue of the highly anticipated miniseries Halo: Initiation.

While the first miniseries ties directly into Microsoft’s Halo: Spartan Assault video game, Halo: Escalation will spin directly out of the events of Halo 4. The series begins when the UNSC Infinity is assigned escort duty for a diplomatic mission between the Arbiter and the Brutes, but has to fend off an attack meant to thwart the negotiations. Featuring Captain Lasky, Spartan Palmer, and a cast of recognizable characters, this ongoing series is poised to be essential reading for fans in search of new story lines set within the canon of the Halo universe!

Much like other Dark Horse video game tie-in titles that are written by the games’ writers, Halo will be written by Halo 4 lead writer Chris Schlerf, with Omar Francia (Mass EffectStar Wars: Legacy) handling art for the first three issues, and with covers by Anthony Palumbo (Dragon Age).

“There are many, many more stories we want to tell in the Halo universe than we’d ever be able to explore solely through the games,” said writer Chris Schlerf. “Having the chance to see those adventures come to life on a monthly basis feels like the ultimate realization of an awful lot of dreaming on our part.”

The first issue of Halo: Escalation arrives in stores on December 11, 2013!
