Crimson Peak

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:4418:]]Guillermo Del Toro has an epic science-fiction monster robot movie coming out next Summer with Pacific Rim.

The director recently made mention that his next movie would take him in a different direction, that he wanted to do something in a different genre.

We now learn the name of the movie with Crimson Peak, described as a “throwback” ghost story.

Del Toro tells Deadline that Crimson Peak is “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.”

Del Toro goes on to mention how he thinks people are getting used to the found-footage fab and wants to take his horror movie back to a time when horror movies were big such as with The Omen, The Exorcist and The Shining.

“To me that is Robert Wise’s The Haunting, which was a big movie, beautifully directed, with the house built magnificently. And the other grand daddy is Jack Clayton’s The Innocents. I’ve always tried to make big-sized horror movies like the ones I grew up watching. Films like The Omen, The Exorcist and The Shining, the latter of which is another Mount Everest of the haunted house movie. I loved the way that Kubrick had such control over the big sets he used, and how much big production value there was. I think people are getting used to horror subjects done as found footage or B-value budgets. I wanted this to feel like a throwback.”

Thomas Tull’s Legendary Entertainment will be backing the project, with Del Toro remarking that he’s had the best movie experience making Pacific Rim with Warner Bros. and Legendary.

Crimson Peak looks to begin filming in 2014 as Del Toro will be filming the pilot for the new FX series, The Strain.

Pacific Rim opens July 12th, 2013, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman.
