Supergirl Hits HBO Max On September 10, Where Fans Can Judge For Themselves

UPDATE: Man of Tomorrow Marketing To Sideline Milly Alcock’s Supergirl (Rumor)

Supergirl now has a streaming date, and it’s likely to go in front of a much wider audience than its theatrical release.

The DCU movie starring Milly Alcock starts streaming globally on HBO Max on Thursday, September 10.

The film debuts on the HBO linear channel two days later, on Saturday, September 12, at 8 p.m. ET, and an American Sign Language version streams on HBO Max the same day.

The date lands two days after the movie’s 4K disc release on September 8, and 76 days after Supergirl opened in theaters on June 26. Superman went from theaters to HBO Max in 70 days last year.

Craig Gillespie directed the film from a script by Ana Nogueira, based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The Numbers Supergirl Brings To Streaming

Supergirl opened to $37.1 million domestic back in June and finished with $126.4 million worldwide: $72.4 million domestic and $54 million international, per Box Office Mojo.

The film left theaters after 40 days as the lowest-grossing DC movie of all time.

Against a net cost of around $170 million, the projected theatrical loss comes in at roughly $244 million. Warner Bros. Discovery pointed at the movie in its own Q2 earnings, where studio profits crashed 89 percent to $96 million.

The scores are split. Supergirl sits at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes from 372 critic reviews. The audience Popcornmeter is at 72% from more than 5,000 verified ratings.

Our review came in at 6/10: not as bad as some critics made it sound, with Milly Alcock good as Kara and Jason Momoa’s Lobo stealing every scene he is in, but sunk by a script that repeats the same beats and a flat villain.

Starting September 10, HBO Max subscribers can judge for themselves at no extra charge.

The Fallout Is Still Going At Warner Bros.

The streaming date arrives with the Supergirl fallout still playing out.

Last month, an official behind-the-scenes featurette revealed AI was used to design Jason Momoa’s Lobo. WBD pulled the video off YouTube as the backlash spread, and per our insiders, the AI use extends to Man of Tomorrow.

The flop has also reached the executive suite: Warner Bros. EVP of Communications Katie Martin Kelley is leaving for Netflix. Deadline called the exit sudden. Per our insiders, it wasn’t, with the Supergirl press messaging viewed inside the studio as botched.

Milly Alcock Returns In Man of Tomorrow

Supergirl also sets up where Kara goes next.

Milly Alcock next appears in Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel that opens in theaters on July 9, 2027. James Gunn directed the film, which wrapped shooting on August 26.

Jason Momoa is rumored to return as Lobo alongside her. That part is not official.

So once Supergirl lands on HBO Max next week, the next stop for the Girl of Steel is Man of Tomorrow next summer.
