Star Wars TV: Dubbed “Underworld”; Bigger Than Any of the Prequels

IGN spoke with George Lucas’ right hand man, Producer Rick McCallum, about the Stars Wars television series that never came to be. However, given enough time we just may see it!

You can check out the full video below with McCallum, here are some highlights that I recapped (not verbatim):

•  The script is timeless as it takes place between Episode III and IV, that 20 year period when Luke is growing up, but it’s not about Luke. 

• It’s about when the Empire is trying to take everything.

•  It’s basically underneath what’s going on, and the working title is called “Underworld.”

•  It’s the criminals, the gangs, like the guys running Wall St. and basically the United States.

•  It’s really a budget thing. It’s really tough because they are trying to have the same special effects in one hour that a two hour movie has, and do it every week. That’s tough — and try to do it for $5 million.

•  It’s not about making money, it’s about breaking even. Other shows go to HBO and sell the worldwide rights, and HBO will give them say $8 million and tell them to cast this actor and that. That isn’t the way they work and that’s the last thing George wants to do.

•  There are 50 unbelievable scripts, each one hour episode is bigger than any of the prequels. They are huge, complex, dark, and adult.

•  Right now it isn’t technologically possible as they only have $5 million an episode, and they have so many digital effects and characters that they are going to hold off and wait to see if there are any major breakthroughs in the next year or so.
