UPDATE 8/25: Kevin Smith revealed he wrote the Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles crossover “like an MCU movie,” as he also explained Lucasfilm had rejected Marvel crossover requests for years and the original plan was even bigger.
After decades of teases, pitches, and dead rumors, it’s official: Star Wars and Marvel are crossing over for the first time.
Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing announced Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles on Tuesday, a five-issue limited series written by Kevin Smith with art by David Marquez.
Issue #1 launches in January 2027, with the finale arriving in May 2027, just ahead of the 50th anniversary of A New Hope on May 25.
A New Hope Comes To Earth-616
The premise plants Star Wars directly inside Marvel’s main comic book continuity. Per the official logline, a “reality-shattering spell” causes the events of A New Hope to unfold on Earth, right in front of Marvel’s heroes.
Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca will team with the likes of Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, and Black Widow.
On the villain side, Doctor Doom allies himself with Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire.
Marquez’s five-part connecting cover for issue #1 goes even deeper, showing the Guardians of the Galaxy, Wolverine, Professor X, the Fantastic Four, Deadpool, Daredevil, Thanos, Ultron, Venom, Grand Moff Tarkin, and even Greedo.
The timing is no accident. Marvel published the first Star Wars comic in April 1977, the same year the original film hit theaters, and the event anchors the franchise’s 50th anniversary publishing slate.
The news broke Tuesday via Entertainment Weekly, Marvel.com and the official Star Wars site.

Smith, who wrote the Guardian Devil run on Daredevil along with Green Arrow and Batman stories, says he’s wanted this since he was a kid with a subscription to Marvel’s original Star Wars comics, joking that when the offer came, “nobody had to Force my hand!”
Outgoing Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, who announced his exit in July and serves as consulting editor on the series, said Marvel has wanted to do this since regaining the Star Wars license over a decade ago, and that getting Lucasfilm’s green light felt “as if Han Solo himself had called” to say all clear.
Lucasfilm Publishing creative director Michael Siglain calls the series “exciting, unpredictable, and heartfelt,” while incoming Marvel EIC Stephen Wacker promises the characters will finally meet in ways fans have dreamed about for decades.
The Rumor Was Right, The Writer Was Wrong
If this sounds familiar, it should.
Back in February, the rumor mill claimed Marvel was developing a Star Wars vs. Avengers crossover with Civil War writer Mark Millar attached, a claim The Hollywood Reporter quickly shot down.
Turns out the trades killed the messenger, not the message. The crossover was real. The writer was Kevin Smith.
Rob Liefeld had also revealed Marvel has taken Star Wars crossover pitches over the years, so the idea has been circling the building for a long time.
As we wrote when the Millar rumor died, this is exactly the kind of stunt Disney was always going to try eventually. Eventually turned out to be the 50th anniversary.
Part Of A Bigger Star Wars x Marvel 2027 Push?
The announcement also lands right as a leaked LEGO set, 75481 Iron Falcon, surfaced branded “Star Wars x Marvel 2027”, complete with mashup minifigures like Spider-Han and Hulkbacca.
Fans pegged that leak as pointing to a LEGO animated Disney+ special. With the comic now official, the leak looks a lot more credible, and 2027 is shaping up as a coordinated crossover year across comics, bricks, and possibly streaming.
Marvel has been in full crossover mode lately anyway, having revived intercompany events with DC through Batman/Deadpool and this year’s Superman/Spider-Man.
Whether Hope Assembles reads as a genuine event or a 50th anniversary synergy play, it’s going to sell. And it settles a question fans have asked since Disney bought Lucasfilm: yes, the streams can cross, as long as it happens on the page.
