Star Trek Sequel (2013): Shooting in 2D, Converting to 3D; Maybe IMAX

J.J. Abrams briefly spoke on his Star Trek sequel at the opening of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protcol.

While he sidesteps question on the film’s villain and specifically on Khan, Abrams gives a quick update that the movie will be shooting in 2D and will be converted into 3D.

“We’re shooting on film, 2-D, and then we’ll do a good high-end conversion like the ‘Harry Potter’ movie and all that. Luckily, with our release date now we have the months needed to do it right because if you rush it, it never looks good.”

Abrams continues, with mention that he would love to film in IMAX.

“We were talking about [shooting in IMAX] and I would love to do it. IMAX is my favorite format; I’m a huge fan.” 

The as-of-yet unnamed Star Trek sequel opens May 17th 2013, and Abrams informs that the sets are just about done with filming to begin in January.

The director was also asked about a sequel to Cloverfield, to which he replied when a good concept hits they will know it and go with it.
