Star Trek’s most famous missing artifact is coming out of hiding.
As part of the franchise’s 60th anniversary takeover of San Diego Comic-Con, the Roddenberry Estate is putting the original 33-inch USS Enterprise model on public display at the Paramount+ Lodge, the first time fans can see it since its stranger-than-fiction recovery.
This is the first Enterprise ever built. It vanished for 45 years. It turned up in a storage unit. And now it resurfaces at the exact moment my insiders say the franchise itself is being taken back to where it started.
The First USS Enterprise Model Ever Built
In mid-1964, production designer Matt Jefferies designed the ship for Gene Roddenberry’s pilot at Desilu, deliberately steering away from a rocket shape so the Enterprise would read as futuristic and believable rather than a missile with fins.
Once the final configuration drawing was locked that August, model maker Richard C. Datin Jr. signed on in November to build a roughly 33-inch miniature from Jefferies’ plans, using kiln-dried sugar pine, plexiglass, and brass.
Roddenberry reviewed the nearly finished ship, requested small tweaks including exterior window details, and the completed model was delivered to production in December 1964.
That little ship did heavy lifting.
It filmed the effects shots for the original pilot, “The Cage.” It served as the prototype that established the final look of the Enterprise and the reference for the famous 11-foot filming miniature that now lives at the Smithsonian.
And it kept working throughout The Original Series, handling opening credits fly-bys and angles the big model couldn’t manage.
Every Enterprise since — every movie, every series, every reboot — descends from this one.
Lost For 45 Years, Found In A Storage Unit
After the series, the model sat on Roddenberry’s desk as a personal keepsake. Around 1978, he loaned it to Paramount during production of Star Trek: The Motion Picture — the same runaway $45 million production Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer just detailed — and it went missing shortly after.
For the next four and a half decades, the first Enterprise was one of fandom’s great unsolved mysteries, with rumors swirling about where it ended up.
Then in October 2023, it surfaced inside a California storage unit purchased at auction. The finders listed it on eBay before experts recognized exactly what they were looking at, and following authentication through Heritage Auctions, the model was returned to Gene’s son, Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, in April 2024.
Since then, the model has been undergoing a light restoration focused on preservation and stabilization — which makes this Comic-Con appearance its coming-out party.
Where To See The Original Enterprise At Comic-Con 2026
The model will be displayed in the Star Trek-inspired Port Galley at the Paramount+ Lodge, located at Happy Does (340 Fifth Ave, San Diego), running Wednesday, July 22 through Sunday, July 26.
The Lodge is an off-site activation not affiliated with Comic-Con, meaning no badge is required.

The Original Enterprise Returns As Star Trek Goes Back To Its Roots
Rod Roddenberry isn’t just lending the ship. He’s also delivering the intro for the franchise’s 60th anniversary Hall H panel on Saturday, putting the founder’s son front and center for the celebration.
And the symbolism could not be thicker, because as I exclusively reported, David Ellison and Mike De Luca are teaming to save Star Trek once the Paramount-WBD deal closes, taking the franchise back to its Wrath of Khan and Next Generation roots.
Paramount is already leaning into the franchise’s physical history with a massive Original Series 60th anniversary Blu-ray gift set, and the actual anniversary lands September 8.
For 45 years, the original Enterprise was lost. For about the last decade, so was Star Trek. One of them is back on display this week. My insiders say the other is right behind it.
