UPDATE: The records didn’t take a day off. Brand New Day is now the fastest movie ever to $700 million domestic, crossing in 13 days to beat The Force Awakens and Endgame at once, while the international haul hit $1.108 billion to pass No Way Home as Sony’s biggest overseas gross of all time.
The billions are stacking up faster than the records can be written down.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed $1 billion at the international box office in just 12 days, per Deadline, the second-fastest movie ever to hit that overseas milestone behind only Avengers: Endgame, pushing the global total to $1.67 billion.
The split: $655 million domestic and $1.01 billion overseas, making Brand New Day the 12th highest-grossing movie in history already, and just the 16th film ever to clear $1 billion at the foreign box office.
Twelve days in, and $2 billion is no longer a projection, it’s a schedule.
The domestic actuals came in hot too: Sony revised the second weekend up to $145 million, locking in the third-best sophomore frame ever, with the $655 million cume standing as the best 10-day start in domestic box office history.
Number One In 66 Of 67 Markets
The global second weekend delivered $381 million, with $236 million from overseas on a 48 percent ease across 72,800-plus screens.
China led again with $29.1 million for a $186.7 million cume, and India delivered the history: Brand New Day is now the biggest Hollywood release ever in the market at $52.8 million.
Brazil posted the best hold among the top 10 at just 33 percent down, while the UK ($87.4 million), Mexico ($65.8 million), France ($49.2 million), and Australia ($39.1 million) keep piling on.
Spidey was number one everywhere except a single market: Korea, where the other half of the IMAX co-share just staged an invasion.
The Odyssey Takes Korea, And Nolan’s Crown
The Odyssey opened Korea to $14.5 million, the biggest start of Christopher Nolan’s career in the market and the biggest August opening ever there for a Hollywood title, backed by a 97 percent CGV Egg score.
That launch capped the bigger milestone: The Odyssey is now Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing movie ever at $1.1 billion, passing The Dark Knight Rises, and it ranks as the second-biggest R-rated movie in history behind only Deadpool & Wolverine‘s $1.33 billion.
The two IMAX co-share partners keep trading punches, and both keep winning: Spidey took 66 markets, Odysseus took Korea and the career crown. Japan added its own wrinkle, where Brand New Day ran second to local animation phenomenon Chiikawa.
The $2 Billion Math
The runway argues for it. Domestic IMAX only came online Thursday, delivering $9.8 million from 300 auditoriums in its first partial weekend, China is still mid-run, Japan builds slowly for Spider-Man, and nothing sizable opens for weeks.
