UPDATE: It happened. Brand New Day passed Endgame at $858.4 million on Monday to become the second highest-grossing movie in domestic box office history, with only The Force Awakens left and $900 million $41.6 million away.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the No. 1 movie in North America again, and by Tuesday, it should be the second-biggest domestic release in history.
Per Sunday estimates, Sony and Marvel Studios’ blockbuster added $39 million from 4,006 theaters in its fourth frame, a 44.8 percent drop, taking the domestic total to $854.9 million.
That puts Avengers: Endgame‘s $858.3 million just $3.4 million away.
It went into the weekend at $815.9 million, already past Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s $814.8 million lifetime total, which makes Brand New Day the third highest-grossing movie in domestic history and the biggest domestic release Sony has ever had.
Only Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936.6 million) sit above it, and one of them is about to fall this week.
Worldwide, a $109 million global weekend lifts the total to $2.22 billion, past The Force Awakens for sixth all-time.
Endgame Falls Next, Then $900 Million
The domestic ladder now reads: The Force Awakens $936.6 million, Endgame $858.3 million, Brand New Day $854.9 million, No Way Home $814.8 million, Avatar $785.2 million.
Once Endgame goes, Tom Holland will have appeared in the second-, third- and fourth-biggest domestic releases of all time, and two of Marvel Studios’ three biggest domestic movies will be Sony releases.
Endgame also gets a theatrical reissue in September with new Doomsday footage. By then Brand New Day should be pushing $900 million, so the padding would need to run into the tens of millions to matter.
The Force Awakens‘ $936.6 million is also $81.7 million away. A late-summer release doesn’t get the holiday legs that carried Star Wars through January, but Brand New Day is still ahead of that film’s pace at the same point and has Labor Day in front of it.
$2.22 Billion Worldwide: Force Awakens Falls, Titanic Next
Ahead of it at the worldwide box office: Titanic ($2.26 billion), Ne Zha 2 ($2.27 billion), Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion), Endgame ($2.79 billion), and Avatar ($2.9 billion).
Titanic and Ne Zha 2 should fall within a couple of weeks, and The Way of Water is roughly $100 million out, which would leave Brand New Day third all-time worldwide behind the two movies nobody is catching.
Insidious Takes Second, The Odyssey Passes The Dark Knight
Sony owned the top two spots, with Insidious: Out of the Further opening to $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters, down from The Red Door but with the best audience score in franchise history. The full breakdown is in our opening-weekend report.
Third is The Odyssey again with $19.5 million in weekend six, taking Christopher Nolan’s epic to $539 million domestic and past The Dark Knight as the biggest movie of his career in North America.
