UPDATE 2: That re-release delivered: Endgame is back at No. 1 worldwide over Avatar and now sits third domestically behind Brand New Day.
UPDATE: The Endgame chase continues, as Sony plans a Brand New Day re-release with new footage.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is officially the biggest movie ever at the domestic box office.
The Sony and Marvel Studios sequel passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Tuesday, per Deadline. The 2015 movie held the record for more than a decade at $936,662,225.
Brand New Day is at $936.7 million after adding $915,000 on Tuesday, day 47 of its run.
Only two movies in history have ever crossed $900 million domestically: this one and the one it just dethroned.

The Records Brand New Day Broke Along The Way
The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie opened on July 31 to $360 million, the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time.
The records piled up from there:
- Biggest Thursday previews and biggest opening day ever
- Highest-grossing opening week and best 10-day total in domestic box office history
- Fastest movie ever to $400 million (four days) and every hundred-million milestone after it
- Six consecutive weekends at No. 1
The all-time domestic crown was the last one left.
Sony Wants Spider-Man 5
Worldwide, Brand New Day stands at $2.45 billion. Only Avatar ($2.92 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) have made more.
Endgame heads back into theaters this month for a re-release, which will likely add to its lead.
As for what comes next, Sony has already answered. Sony boss Tom Rothman said “yes” to another Tom Holland Spider-Man movie, and Holland and Zendaya both said they would love to return.
Producer Amy Pascal wants Cretton back to direct Spider-Man 5, though his Naruto movie shoots first, which points to a 2029 release.
The biggest movie in domestic box office history is a Spider-Man movie, and everyone involved wants to make another one.
