UPDATE: The domestic side kept pace. Brand New Day is crossing $800 million domestic in a record 19 days, the fastest movie ever to the mark and just the fourth to reach it, with No Way Home‘s lifetime total next for third place all-time. That one fell too, and a fourth straight No. 1 weekend of $39 million has the worldwide total at $2.22 billion, past The Force Awakens for sixth all-time, with Titanic and Ne Zha 2 next. Domestically it has now passed Endgame at $858.4 million for second all-time.
The $2 billion club just got its first solo superhero.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has crossed $2 billion at the worldwide box office, per Deadline, standing at $2.022 billion after just 17 days with $785.8 million domestic and $1.236 billion international.
That makes the Sony and Marvel Studios sequel the eighth movie in history to reach the mark, and the second-fastest ever behind only Avengers: Endgame‘s 11 days.
Box office trackers called it Saturday night. Deadline made it official Sunday morning.
The third global weekend came in at $188.7 million, with $118.7 million from 67 international markets and a domestic frame Sony revised up to $70 million, the second-best third weekend in domestic history behind only The Force Awakens‘ $90.2 million.
On Wednesday, when it became the fastest movie ever to $700 million domestic, Brand New Day stood at roughly $1.81 billion worldwide, with $704.5 million stateside and $1.108 billion international.
It added more than $200 million in the four days since.
Second-Fastest To $2 Billion, Behind Only Endgame
Only seven movies have ever grossed $2 billion: Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Titanic, Ne Zha 2, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War. Brand New Day makes eight.
Deadline clocks the crossing at 17 days from the July 31 domestic opening, or 19 counting from the July 29 international start.
Per box office trackers, that trails only Endgame‘s 11 days and beats Ne Zha 2 (33 days), The Way of Water (39), Avatar (47), Infinity War (48), and The Force Awakens (53). Titanic needed a 3D re-release and 5,235 days.
Both Avengers movies were team-ups.
Brand New Day is the first solo superhero movie to $2 billion, and it’s now past Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s $1.92 billion as the biggest Spider-Man movie ever made and the highest-grossing comic book movie since Endgame.
It’s the same movie that hit $1 billion in six days as the second-fastest ever, then cleared $1 billion overseas alone in 12 days. The pattern has held for three weeks: second only to Endgame on speed, first on everything else.
The Weekend That Got It There
Domestically, Sony’s Sunday estimate lifted the third weekend to $70 million, up from Saturday’s $67 million read, and the $785.8 million cume already clears Avatar‘s $785.2 million. Brand New Day is the fourth highest-grossing movie in domestic history, a day ahead of Saturday’s projection.
Only The Force Awakens ($936.6 million), Endgame ($858.3 million), and No Way Home ($814.8 million) remain above it stateside, and with the cume at $794 million through Monday, No Way Home‘s third-place total falls this weekend.
Overseas, the third weekend delivered $118.7 million on 53,700 screens for a $1.236 billion international total. China led again with $10 million for a $210 million cume, France added $9.1 million for $63.7 million, and the UK crossed $100 million at $106 million, while Japan slipped just 15 percent to $27 million as it builds.
Brand New Day is now Sony’s biggest release ever in 36 international markets, up from 26 a week ago.
One more number worth circling: through 17 days, Brand New Day is running nearly 6 percent ahead of The Force Awakens‘ pace at the same point, and The Force Awakens finished at $936.6 million, the all-time domestic record.
The first $1 billion domestic grosser has gone from fantasy to a live discussion.
What Falls Next
Infinity War‘s $2.05 billion should be in the rearview mirror by Monday or Tuesday, with The Force Awakens‘ $2.07 billion falling by midweek for sixth place on the all-time worldwide chart.
Above that sit Ne Zha 2 and Titanic in the $2.2 billion range, The Way of Water at $2.32 billion, and the two giants, Endgame at $2.8 billion and Avatar at $2.9 billion.
Brand New Day is pacing past Ne Zha 2 and The Way of Water on the way to $2.5 billion, which would make it just the third movie ever to reach that mark. Japan is still ramping and IMAX only came online domestically August 6.
