Spider-Man 5: Sony Wants Cretton Back, But Naruto Shoots First

Spider-Man 5: Sony Wants Cretton Back, But Naruto Shoots First

Spider-Man 5 doesn’t exist yet. There’s no script, no writers’ room, and no release date.

But the people who would make it happen are now saying the same thing: they want Destin Daniel Cretton back.

The problem isn’t interest. It’s the calendar.

Two weeks ago, Sony boss Tom Rothman answered “yes” to another Holland Spider-Man, Holland and Zendaya said they would love to return, and Kevin Feige said “there are always plans.”

Now we’re getting a clearer picture of what those plans actually look like, and right now they come down to two things: Cretton and timing.

Here’s where the next Tom Holland Spider-Man movie actually stands.

Spider Man Brand New Day Destin Daniel Cretton

Sony And Marvel Want Cretton Back

Producer Amy Pascal was asked directly by Deadline whether Cretton is involved with the next movie and whether a writers’ room already exists.

Her answer couldn’t have been much clearer: “There’s no writers room. If we have our way, he certainly will be.”

Pascal also confirmed the Sony and Marvel Studios arrangement remains what it has always been: a picture-by-picture deal.

Every new Spider-Man movie requires a fresh agreement rather than automatically moving into production.

She said the franchise has operated that way going all the way back to Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man, with each movie needing to work on its own rather than having the next chapter locked years in advance.

As for Holland, Pascal indicated he’s open to coming back, but stressed there is currently nothing in place for a follow-up.

Cretton Wants To Stay In The Spider-Man Family

Cretton isn’t confirming Spider-Man 5, but he’s also making no secret about wanting to keep going.

Asked by The Wrap whether he’d consider making another MCU movie, Cretton said: “Would I be open to doing another movie with this family? Definitely.”

Speaking with Deadline, he made it clear the next step would be figuring out the story rather than simply declaring another movie.

Knowing there will be another Spider-Man movie, Cretton said, “that conversation will continue in the writers’ room” as the team works out what comes next.

And this is the director whose movie opened to a record $355 million and earned public praise from Kevin Feige, who credited Cretton, Holland, and Pascal by name.

Nobody involved sounds interested in replacing him.

Naruto

The Problem Is Naruto

And that’s where the schedule becomes important.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton’s next movie is Lionsgate’s live-action Naruto, with production planned for the first half of 2027.

Lionsgate first announced the project in 2015, Cretton came aboard in 2024, and a worldwide casting search for Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura launched in July.

Cretton also spent part of the Brand New Day press tour talking up Naruto. Lionsgate has one of the hottest directors in Hollywood coming off a massive Spider-Man hit, so there’s little reason for the studio to give up its spot on his calendar (however, at Comic-Con, we’ve heard there are problems).

Right now, Naruto is the project in front of Spider-Man 5.

The Math Points To Spider-Man 5 In 2029

Nobody has announced a release date, but we can take a swing.

If Naruto shoots during the first half of 2027, Cretton likely isn’t free to move into another major production before late 2027.

Brand New Day ran roughly eleven months from its first day of filming to release. If a Cretton-directed Spider-Man 5 starts shooting sometime in 2028, the calendar points toward a 2029 release.

That also fits Marvel’s wider schedule.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives December 18, with Secret Wars following a year later, and reporting surrounding Cretton’s move to Naruto has said Holland’s next Spider-Man chapter won’t move at the breakneck pace of the “Home” trilogy.

A 2029 Spider-Man 5 would put Holland back on the big screen after Secret Wars and give Marvel one of its biggest possible movies to kick off whatever comes next.

The other option is Sony and Marvel hiring a different director and moving sooner.

Nothing anyone has said publicly points in that direction.

Sony Has No Reason To Rush It

Then there are the numbers.

Brand New Day is the fifth highest-grossing domestic release ever after three weekends, with $782.8 million and climbing.

Worldwide, it sits right on top of No Way Home‘s $1.92 billion franchise record, with the $2 billion club directly behind it.

Sony’s international run is already the biggest in the studio’s history.

When your movie is putting up numbers like that, there’s no need to rush a sequel just to claim a date. You wait for the director you want and get the next one right.

So that’s where Spider-Man 5 stands: no script, no writers’ room, no release date, and nearly everyone pointing toward Cretton returning, exactly as we said the day Rothman gave his one-word answer.

For now, the only firm production window on Cretton’s calendar belongs to Naruto, while Marvel still has Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars ahead.
