UPDATE 8/28: Daniel Richtman has another Sonic 4 report, this one describing a Sonic who wears clothes and has a robot head as a sidekick, which fits the alternate-future story these designs point to.
Metal Sonic and Amy Rose have made their first full appearance ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and it did not come from Paramount. They also appear to confirm those earlier rumors.
Leaked concept slides for the movie’s theater merchandise line hit social media this week, showing both characters’ designs across popcorn buckets, cups, and blind bag figures.
The slides come from Zinc Group, a company that produces promotional merchandise for movie theaters, and every image is stamped confidential and “concept pending,” with a disclaimer that the artwork may not be final.
Sourcing note: this is a leak, not a studio reveal, and the products themselves could change before release. The character designs are the part worth paying attention to.
What the leaked merch shows
The lineup includes a 64oz popcorn bucket shaped like a clear ball with Sonic curled up inside it. The popcorn fills the ball around him, the lid is his head, and the whole thing lights up with LEDs.
There is also a 105oz Metal Sonic head bucket with red LED eyes, offered with or without the lights, plus a 130oz Sonic bust bucket covered in fuzzy blue flocking.
Rounding it out are Metal Sonic mini figures in blind bags and what appear to be drink toppers of Metal Sonic and Amy Rose posed on golden ring bases.
The cup art may be the biggest reveal of the batch.
One design shows movie Sonic squaring off with Metal Sonic under the words “Sonic vs. Metal,” with “only in cinemas” branding along the edge. That is the whole movie’s marketing pitch in three words.
The designs stick close to the games
Metal Sonic looks pulled straight from Sega’s blueprints: glossy blue armor, black faceplate, red eyes, silver claw hands, an orange turbine in his chest, and red shoes mirroring Sonic’s own.
Amy keeps her classic look, translated into the movies’ realistic style, with the red dress, the red boots, and her giant Piko Piko Hammer slung over her shoulder.
That is the same hammer that came swinging in to smash a swarm of Metal Sonics in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 post-credits scene that introduced both characters.
The merch backs up the time travel report
Scooper Daniel Richtman reported last week that Sonic 4 is built around time travel or multiverse travel, with Shadow appearing as a sword-wielding knight.
Earlier this year, the same scooper reported Amy’s movie origin: she comes from an alternate future where Robotnik and Metal Sonic rule the world, and she travels back to prevent it.
A battle-ready Amy, a menacing Metal Sonic, and a “Sonic vs. Metal” tagline fit that story like a glove.
Director Jeff Fowler has said the pair will be the focus of the movie, and both characters debuted in 1993’s Sonic CD, the time travel game the production has been pointing at since filming began.
Where Sonic the Hedgehog 4 stands
Fowler is directing, with filming wrapped in May.
The cast includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Keanu Reeves as Shadow, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 opens March 19, 2027 in IMAX.
Expect the official Metal Sonic and Amy reveal to arrive on Paramount’s schedule, probably with a trailer. The popcorn buckets just got there first.
