William Shatner Wants A Good Reason To Return As Captain Kirk — Strange New Worlds Wasn’t It

William Shatner has put out a statement on Captain Kirk.

Two days after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds producers revealed they tried to get Shatner back every season, the 95-year-old posted “A statement from me to you” on X.

The message: he is ready to return. No one has ever brought him a reason to.

‘I Would Be Delighted To Consider It’

Shatner opens by saying he wants “to put a stop to the rumor mill before it starts producing even more fiction than Star Trek ever did.”

“If someone came up with a meaningful way to bring Captain Kirk back to life, and gave him something genuinely interesting to do that added to the beauty and spirit of Star Trek, I would be delighted to consider it.”

Then the line that answers the producers directly:

“But that has never come up.”

Shatner continued:

“I love Star Trek just as much as all of you folks do. Kirk has been an extraordinary part of my life, and I would never want to bring him back simply for the sake of bringing him back.”

He closed:

“So, until someone comes knocking with an idea worthy of Kirk… I wait. For them. Or for eternity.”

William Shatner Star Trek Return Message

‘An Idea Worthy Of Kirk’

Executive producer Henry Alonso Myers said this week the closest pitch was an animated “City on the Edge of Forever” follow-up, and that the sides never got on the same page.

Shatner’s statement gives his side: nothing that reached him was meaningful enough.

It is the same bar he set in early 2025: a Kirk return “has to mean something. It has to be the show.”

Shatner has said he would play Kirk again at 95, and he is set for the Star Trek panel at New York Comic-Con on October 10 for the 60th anniversary.

Our insiders say the new regime is building the franchise back around The Wrath of Khan and The Next Generation.

Shatner says he is waiting for an idea worthy of Kirk.

Our insiders say that is exactly what is being built.
