The #SaveStargate campaign just added two more names to its banner, and they belong to a pair of Stargate Atlantis leads.
David Hewlett and Rachel Luttrell, the official Stargate signing guests at Shore Leave 46 this past weekend, stopped by the fan campaign’s table, posed for photos, and signed the #SaveStargate banner as fans pressed Amazon MGM Studios to revive Martin Gero’s canceled series.
It capped a weekend of momentum for the fan effort, one that spilled onto X, where #Stargate was trending as the convention wrapped.
Two Atlantis Leads Sign On
Hewlett played Dr. Rodney McKay across all five seasons of Atlantis — a character first introduced on Stargate SG-1 — and remains one of the franchise’s most beloved figures.
Luttrell played Athosian leader Teyla Emmagan for the show’s entire 2004–2009 run, and has been one of #SaveStargate’s most visible cast supporters, having helped rally her former co-stars to the cause earlier this summer.
Both headlined Shore Leave 46, held July 10–12 at the Wyndham Lancaster Resort & Convention Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, America’s oldest fan-run science-fiction convention, put on by the STAT Club of Maryland.
According to the campaign, the two Atlantis stars visited the #SaveStargate table for photos and added their signatures to the banner alongside hundreds of fans.
For a grassroots effort, getting the show’s own actors to literally sign their names to it is about as clear an endorsement as it gets.
A Weekend of Fan Momentum
The campaign says hundreds of sci-fi fans stopped by its table over the weekend, grabbing stickers and flyers and talking about what a new Stargate would mean to them.
The pitch from attendees was blunt and it’s the same argument the numbers keep making.
“There’s not a lot of good sci-fi on television right now,” one convention-goer said when asked why he supported the campaign. “Stargate is a proven property … Bring the show back. We will watch it.”
Fans applauded the campaign during the Stargate Atlantis panel, and more than 100 signed the banner in the span of a few hours on Sunday morning. T
he “Save Stargate with Martin Gero” petition picked up another 200-plus signatures over the weekend on top of an already-surging total.
#Stargate Trends As Petition Nears 115,000
The convention buzz didn’t stay in Lancaster.
#Stargate climbed the trending charts on X over the weekend, exactly the kind of organic, measurable engagement a studio is supposed to be chasing.
It’s of a piece with everything this campaign has produced: the petition blowing past 100,000 verified signatures and now closing in on 115,000, a banner plane over Amazon MGM’s Culver City lot, and a billboard in Times Square written in the franchise’s own in-jokes.
Amazon reportedly walked away from Gero’s series out of concern it wouldn’t reach beyond the existing fanbase.
That fanbase keeps answering the question for them by showing up, signing, trending, and telling anyone who’ll listen that they’ll watch. It’s the most honest demand signal a studio can get, and it’s being handed to Amazon for free.
Amazon Still Silent
More than a month after Variety reported that Amazon MGM Studios had decided not to move forward with the promised new series, the studio has said nothing about the petition, the stunts, or the mounting cast support. Our own requests for comments have gone unanswered.
The project was scrapped roughly 20 weeks into preproduction under Gero, Joe Mallozzi, and Brad Wright, in a move widely tied to the studio’s executive shakeup.
Shore Leave was the latest stop in a summer-long push that organizers say is far from over, with more events planned, including a #SaveStargate presence at San Diego Comic-Con later this month.
For context on the franchise Amazon is sitting on: Stargate spans the 1994 theatrical film plus the two direct-to-DVD SG-1 features, The Ark of Truth and Continuum; three live-action series — SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe — running a combined 17 seasons from 1997 to 2011; and the 2018 prequel Stargate Origins.
The gate’s still open. The fans keep walking through it. Whether Amazon MGM is watching remains the only question that counts.
