Marvel protected the Sadie Sink secret for two years, through test screenings, Comic-Con, and the world premiere audience itself.
Then a musician ended it in one sentence on the red carpet.
Singer Steve Lacy, whose song “oh yeah?” appears on the Spider-Man: Brand New Day soundtrack, was asked during a red carpet interview at Monday’s Los Angeles premiere which character he was most excited to see, with the interviewer specifically framing it as “without spoiling anything.”
Per TheWrap, Lacy answered: “I like Jean. She’s the villain but there’s a reason to her madness.” Asked point-blank whether he’d just dropped a spoiler, Lacy sidestepped with a simple “I like her.”
The clip was everywhere within the hour, and Sink is now trending.
What Lacy Actually Confirmed
To be precise about it: Lacy never said “Grey” and never said “Sink.” But put his answer next to everything else and the picture assembles itself.
Sink playing Jean has been the leading theory for over a year, backed by the darkened hair and green contacts in Marvel’s own teaser videos.
And the villain framing is the part regular readers already know: the leaked details on Sink’s character pointed to her as the film’s villain, matching the official synopsis teasing “a powerful villain no one can even see”, which reads like a telepath.
Lacy’s single sentence corroborates both threads at once.
It also recasts Tom Holland’s TikTok from days ago, where he flatly said Jean Grey is “not in this movie, but it would be pretty cool.”
Holland spent years living down his reputation as Marvel’s biggest spoiler. It turns out his redemption arc was running misdirection on the red carpet’s behalf.
For the completists, there is one wrinkle: fan sleuthing has pointed to a character named Jean DeWolff existing in the movie, so “Jean” is technically ambiguous.
But DeWolff is a police ally in the comics, not a villain. Lacy’s framing points one direction.
The Irony Is Brutal
Consider everything Marvel did to protect this. Sink’s reveal videos got censored with web graphics over her mouth. Her official teaser gave three “confirmed answers” that confirmed nothing.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton told THR the movie is better if you don’t know certain things, and Monday night’s premiere reactions proved the screening audience honored it, with nobody who saw the film spoiling her role.
The mystery survived Comic-Con. It survived the actual movie screening.
It did not survive the carpet outside, and fans are already joking that Lacy has been dusted from future Marvel premieres.
What It Means Going Forward
If Jean Grey is in this movie as its villain, Brand New Day just became the true bridge into Marvel’s mutant era, with reports already claiming Sink is set for Avengers: Secret Wars and industry buzz pointing to a formal X-Men casting reveal at D23.
The Comic-Con panel notably announced no X-Men casting, and now we may know why: the first mutant was hiding in Friday’s movie all along.
