Deadpool crashed the party.
Ryan Reynolds made a surprise appearance at Marvel’s Hall H panel on Saturday night, popping up in the crowd during the Avengers: Doomsday portion in a brand new gray and black Deadpool suit, the X-Force colors from the comics that have never appeared on screen.
Working the moment like a fan Q&A, Reynolds introduced himself as Ricky, “a mononym, like Cher or Madonna,” and claimed to just be cosplaying. The suit itself is apparently made of denim with a Canadian flag on the chest, a full Canadian tuxedo, and Reynolds later posted an unmasked photo in it.
The Bit
Ricky’s first question went to Paul Rudd: why was Thor crying, a callback to the Deadpool & Wolverine scene teasing Wade’s future. Rudd’s answer: “Maybe he’s a Wrexham fan?”
Then came the pitch. Ricky asked when Avengers: Doomsday starts filming, calling the panel an awfully expensive way to announce a movie. Robert Downey Jr. shut him down from the stage: “It’s in the can, bro. Look around you. Did you bump your head?”
A deflated Deadpool asked whether there’d be additional photography, overages, hot costs, or maybe last-minute additions. When the answer was no, he declared no further questions, told Happy Hogan to fetch the Audi, dropped the mic, and walked out of Hall H.
The Joke Underneath The Joke
Here’s what everyone laughing missed: that bit is Marvel doing comedy about its own production drama. “Additional photography, overages, hot costs, last-minute additions” isn’t random Deadpool word salad. It’s a checklist of everything that’s been reported about Doomsday’s troubled edit, from the half hour cut as actors reportedly fight for screen time to Feige admitting the movie moved to December because it couldn’t be finished. RDJ declaring “it’s in the can” to 7,000 people is the gag doing double duty as damage control.
As for whether Deadpool is actually in Doomsday, Marvel confirmed nothing, and the bit was engineered to keep it that way: Ricky begging for a role reads as a denial, while debuting a never-before-seen suit at the biggest Marvel event in two years reads as the opposite. And remember, Reynolds already confirmed another Deadpool movie is happening, saying “it’s going to be great”. That gray suit is going somewhere.
