UPDATE: Ryan Reynolds crashed Marvel’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con as Deadpool.
Wade Wilson is not done. Ryan Reynolds confirmed another Deadpool movie is happening during an appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York City on Sunday, and the pitch is going deeper into the comics than the first three films ever did.
“There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies. I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics,” Reynolds said on stage, via The Hollywood Reporter, pointing to Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza and longtime Deadpool comics writer Gerry Duggan as the material he loves.
“There’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great,” he added.
A Reversal From “He’s A Supporting Character”
This is a real shift. Reynolds spent the past year talking Deadpool down as a lead, flatly calling Wade “a supporting character” earlier this year and saying he didn’t think he would ever center him again, even though he had material written. THR also reported last year that Reynolds was exploring ideas for a film built around X-Men characters rather than another solo outing.
Reynolds didn’t say Sunday whether the new movie is a true Deadpool 4 or an ensemble with Wade riding shotgun, and Marvel Studios hasn’t officially announced anything. But “another Deadpool film” straight from the guy who controls the character’s movie fate is about as close to confirmation as it gets without a press release.
The Money And The Timing Say It All
The box office made this inevitable. Deadpool & Wolverine cleared $1.3 billion worldwide in 2024 as the biggest R-rated movie ever, following 2016’s Deadpool and 2018’s Deadpool 2, and the three Deadpool films still sit at the top of the R-rated opening charts that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey just crashed. Franchises that print money do not stay parked.
The timing is doing some work, too. Reynolds dropped this days before Marvel returns to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, where a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer is expected ahead of the December 18 release. Reynolds has long been rumored for a Doomsday appearance, though Marvel has never confirmed it, and Kevin Feige just held up bringing Wesley Snipes back in Deadpool & Wolverine as a win while calling himself a “gigantic loser” over Blade.
If Wade shows up in December, Sunday’s “eventually another Deadpool film” starts sounding less like a someday and more like a setup. Either way, the Merc with a Mouth is headlining again, and Reynolds wants the weird stuff from the comics this time.
