Ryan Gosling Heavily Involved With Star Wars: Starfighter Just Like Ryan Reynolds With Deadpool (Exclusive)

While at San Diego Comic-Con, I spoke with a Hasbro rep who works on the Star Wars line.

Since Hasbro develops the action figures, the team gets early access to a lot of the development material, which means they see and know things well before the rest of us.

So when the conversation turned to Star Wars: Starfighter, I paid attention. The rep told me that everything he is hearing about the movie is good.

Ryan Gosling is protective of Star Wars: Starfighter

The rep offered up a comparison that should have fans feeling pretty good: just as Ryan Reynolds is known for being protective of and deeply involved with Deadpool, I’m told it’s a similar situation with Ryan Gosling and Star Wars: Starfighter, as Gosling is heavily involved with the movie.

What makes the comparison even more fitting is that both projects share the same director, as Shawn Levy helmed Deadpool & Wolverine with Reynolds and now directs Starfighter, so Levy knows exactly how to make a movie with a star who is all in.

Lucasfilm loves Flynn Gray

The rep also said he is really excited about the kid in the movie, played by Flynn Gray, and told me Lucasfilm is really happy with the young actor’s performance.

We talked about how Starfighter follows the familiar Star Wars setup of an older character paired with a younger one, but while making it clear he couldn’t reveal spoilers, the rep hinted there could be some sort of twist and that this isn’t just the same story repeated.

I told him I hope the kid turns out to be Dark Side, which caused a fan standing next to us to turn her head at me in disbelief and shock. Hey, a guy can dream.

Could Starfighter lead to more?

Regarding whether the movie is a one-off, the rep said Starfighter could work as a standalone, but it’s also set up in a way where it could lead to new things.

We both agreed that obviously depends on the box office, which Lucasfilm badly needs following The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Star Wars: Starfighter opens in theaters on May 28, 2027, directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Jonathan Tropper, and starring Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Filming wrapped back in December.

The movie also ties into Lucasfilm’s big plans for the Star Wars 50th anniversary, and Hasbro’s big Comic-Con reveals are now live right here.
